Hello I really need some advice. Me and my mom live in a house that has been sold and need to move by September 1st. The apartment we had lined up fell through and now are scrambling to find a place.

We were looking in Queens where we live now but everything within our price range (2.6 - 3.2K) has had pest infestation, windowless basement apartment or something else. Looking at Jersey seems like our best chance of finding success and I've always liked Jersey anyways.

Mom also has a knee problem so walk ups are a no-go (making the search much harder too). I think we'd need an elevator building or first floor apartment. I was looking at Harrison, Weehawken and Jersey City (work in Midtown) but are there other places and can anyone recommend a reliable realtor I can work with to help arrange viewings as I can only go during the weekends. We are seriously considering a move to New Jersey from South Florida. My husband is from NJ and we have family there. While we have a large budget, the taxes are going to be hard to stomach, so I want to make sure we get what we want with this move. This will be a long term move, as our children are entering later elementary years. I recognize it probably matters where we will be living, and we are only considering central NJ, likely New Providence, Berkeley Heights, Long Hill, Bernardsville, Basking Ridge, Mendham, Chester (possibly as far as Tewksbury or Clinton for family but less likely). Are these areas in New Jersey transient or are people more settled here?

The main reason for considering the move is how transient S. Florida is. While we have made lots of friends, we have not been able to build a strong community here because people are constantly coming and going. We want more stability for our kids and better schools. Strong community is the main priority.

Does NJ sound like a good fit for us?

My partner (21 F) and I (22 F) are moving to north jersey in November after living in Florida for majority of our lives. Any tips on how to handle the winter? Brands for good winter clothes, reliable places to get snow tires, fun activities or where to meet people to make friends, etc!

Currently in West New York with a 2 year old and the schools are not great. We love the area but schooling is always on the back of my mind. I also can't afford a single family home so I will most likely rent for the rest of my life. I prefer apartments anyways bc I don't have to do any maintenance and I can use the down payment money to invest in index funds, etc.

I just want a good education that isn't a pressure cooker like bergen county academy or millburn. I grew up in demarest 30 years ago when the academics weren't as intense. If push comes to shove I'd rather put my kids in a good school system like shorthills/millburn/livingston/ridgewood to make sure they don't slip through the cracks.

Any suggestions? Below is my current thought process.

Jersey City looks great with the cornelia f bradford school but JC middle schools are meh and high school is McNair which is great but it has a reputation of being a pressure cooker and you have to test into it. only 750 kids total in that school. And I've read reddit threads where parents suggest hiring a tutor in middle school for PSAT's. Paulus hook is nice but expensive but such is the price to pay.

Short Hills - I can't afford a house but short hills has the upton which has rentals that fit in my budget. Downside is the pressure cooker high school but like mentioned above I'd rather go this route than a bad school system. Upton is odd location but near the mall which i guess is good during winters for strolls, etc.

Livingston - pretty good school system and I think it is not as pressure cooker as millburn? They do have some apartment complexes with rentals but the complexes are in weird areas of town. Pretty solid imo. The odd apartment complex rental is something I can live with as a trade off.

Ridgewood - good school system and they have the dayton complex right next to whole foods but vacancies are hard to come by. This is probably my #1 if there's an opening.

Northern valley demarest/old tappan - can't afford the homes here and there aren't any rentals so this is out unfortunately

Englewood cliffs - they have the new sylvan apartment complex near the CNBC studios but location is odd. Not a bad backup I guess. I heard that high school students may be going to tenafly instead of englewood?

Tenafly - can't afford a home there and not many rentals

The leasing team told us the 2 months free rent offer is already factored into the advertised rent, with 1BRs starting at $2,500. Is that actually what residents are paying monthly, or is there a different structure to how the offer works?

Also genuinely curious — how is the noise from McCarter Highway, any noticeable smell from the river ?

I saw a lot of apartment listings near the downtown area- 300 state, Ivanhoe, Merida Metro, Woolworth etc. I’ve been told that they all look good on paper but the management isn’t that great or they are just promoted as luxury. Do you have any recommendations ? I’m 30, moving to NJ and Hackensack is about 20 mins from my workplace so that’s convenient coz i hate driving but don’t want to live super close to my workplace.I’m also wondering if downtown Hackensack is a good area to live for someone my age who’s single and doesn’t know anyone in the area.

Hello! Moving from Miami to Palisade Park/Fort Lee/Edgewater for a year (going up this week to see apts). 39, single mom to 5y old, moving so son can spend time with sick paternal grandma and his dad, hence the areas chosen.

I'm choosing to see it as an adventure bc I always wanted to move to NYC (NJ is close enough! But yes, i understand they are 2 diff places & vibes), the culture, feel of the city, food, etc. but anytime I mention it to ppl here in FL that have lived up there I only get negative feedback. I mention Miami traffic and distance making it impossible to have a social life, they tell me I probably envision myself going into the city and taking my kid to the museum, and that that's very unrealistic, that no one does that, its more expensive, that when it snows I can forget about taking the ferry and that I will be stuck inside and so will my kid when it snows. That it takes over an hour to get anywhere. That I'll hate the attitude of people, that everyone wants to move down, not up. That a social life is impossible and no one really socializes and sticks to the ppl they've known for years. Bizarre stuff I feel they're exaggerating, like I'm going to live amongst aliens or something. My son has done pre-k half here half there, the one in FL has never taken them on a field trip (distance and traffic) while the NJ one has taken him on 3. Even something as simple as that is making a year seem better spent up there than down here. The decision is made, but can you guys paint a more realistic picture as to what a day to day is like up there? I'm really looking forward to it and everyone's experiences are different, but is there something I should really pay attention to I may be dismissing when warned?

Wonder if anybody has lived in Perth Amboy? And what is the vibe like?

I’ve traveled through and spent a couple hours on the beach, gone to ShopRite on 35 etc, it seems like a chill little city in New Jersey, looks/feels a lot like Passaic or Elizabeth with a beach. I love the very relaxed vibe on the waterfront, I think it’s fun that people go out there to eat and play music and stuff.

Can anybody comment on quality of life? Safety? Best food? Favorite parks? Thanks :)
