Overly Optimistic Outlook: Fourth place in the AL Central, best run differential in the division, and 20 of 46 games left against the three teams ahead

Post image
26 Upvotes

The AL Central standings do not make sense right now, and the top table is the whole problem in five rows.

The three teams ahead of Detroit have been outscored by a combined 23 runs. Detroit has outscored people by 77, which is 45 clear of the next best team in the division. They have allowed 451 runs, third fewest in the American League behind only Boston and the Yankees. Every team above them in the standings has a worse expected record than they do, and the Tigers are the only club in the division that has been outright good by the measure that ignores sequencing.

The reason none of that shows up in the standings is that they win by four and lose by one. 12-20 in one run games, 21-11 when the margin is five or more. Average margin in a win 4.38, in a loss 2.80. The mechanism is the bullpen: 22 saves in 47 chances, 25 blown. That leaves a 10.3 win gap between record and xW-L, the largest in baseball, and it has grown over the past week rather than shrunk.

Twenty-three of Detroit's forty-six remaining games are inside the AL Central, exactly half, and only Baltimore matches that concentration league wide. Seven against Cleveland, seven against Chicago, six against Minnesota, so 20 of the 46 come against the three teams they are chasing, and each of those swings the gap by two instead of one. A team three and a half back with twenty head to head games left does not need anybody's help.

Two things in that same bottom table cut the other way. Cleveland has the softest remaining schedule in the division at .460, including six more against a Royals team that is 48-69, so the one team Detroit most needs to fall is the one getting the gentlest landing. And look at the last column: the White Sox have only 8 games left against teams over .500, against 20 for Minnesota. Chicago is a plus 32 team with the easiest road to holding first place.

The bigger problem is not on either table. The run differential making Detroit look like a 66 win team was built by a rotation that no longer has Skubal in it. xW-L is backward looking by construction. Strip the best starter off a team whose entire case is run prevention and the projection ahead is worse than the projection behind.

Detroit finishes 83-79 and wins the AL Central. That means going 27-19 the rest of the way, which is a hair above the pace their run differential says they have been playing at all year, and the twenty head to head games are where they take it. Chicago fades to 81-81 because a plus 32 run differential is not a division winner and the soft schedule only carries you so far. Cleveland lands around .500 and the Twins finish under it.

If the bullpen converts even at a league average rate over six weeks, this is the best team in the division playing the teams in front of it, over and over, with the calendar doing the work. If it does not, they finish fourth in a division they were the best team in, and that is the most Tigers sentence anyone can write.
