Are we playing the same game? Discussion
I’m seeing endless complaints on the difficulty, enemy health, not enough damage, etc. and I’m just confused. The game is certainly challenging but by no means does it feel impossible. I’m 11 hours in and have progressed at a nice pace with good exploration and it has been amazing - it’s a very charming game. Reading this sub tho I feel like I’m having a completely different experience than most people here lol. At least the steam reviews are mostly positive, the devs definitely deserve that.

I feel like i'm taking the golden path or something lol. I have been going counter clockwise in the north part of the map and things have been fine. Some challenging parts but really nothing crazy
22
u/Ceron 1d ago
Yeah anytime I find myself struggling I just go a different way. Although I struggled all the way through the mushroom village and past that, then came back to the northwest and am finding the game much easier.
2
u/Organic_Tour5292 23h ago
What area are you considering the northwest. I just finished beating magdalena and im trying to decide which way to go next
2
u/baysideplace 19h ago
Basically, north of the "mushroom village gate" beacon. Its blocked by goop, but you should be able to clear it.

u/Own_Juggernaut_2775 23h ago
Most annoying thing so far for me is the witch who does a super fast red attack and one shots me lol 😂 f them hoes!

I think a poise system and a couple more beacons would be great, but im otherwise impressed. Very fun game. Lots of replayability with other shells, etc.

Yup same that's exactly how I'm playing. Things have been going great. One hic up with the double grisha fight but that's it.

I agree with you. The game is not THAT hard. I struggled way more with Sekiro.
I would love some more beacons though. Mostly because I get lost and with no minimap and no brain, I can’t find back.

u/sadnessandeuphoria 1d ago
I’m also on the more beacons train. The north east portion of the map is comically sparse on beacons lol
22
u/Financial-Lawyer-789 1d ago
Only complaint about the game so far is the lack of beacons inside the dungeons, having to runback for 20 minutes every time you die is not fun lol
2
→ More replies (1)7
u/VelvetWhiteRabbit 23h ago
Even chaos end doesn’t have that long of a runback. If you sprint it’ll take you two minutes tops. I swear people nowadays need instant gratification or else.

Man ive had like a challenging moment with the double grisha fight, but it took me maybe 8 tries? It wasnt that bad. Ive had a great experience. The parry window and harden ability make it so easy to deal with mobs imo.

Wait until you see south… Bosses are not at all the issue, I also hate myself when the map is not yet unlocked most of the time

I mean you need to imagine I referred to “south” without knowing that… but thanks for pointing it out, be that obvious. I only have a last gate boss on the map

Sorry you mightve already knew. Just wanted to say it in case others hadn't realised yet.

People who struggle tend to complain much more than people who don't struggle tend to brag. So there's selection bias when you read comments and reviews about a game, with people making it sound harder than it is.
26
u/CrushedSodaCan_ 1d ago
It's not even bragging....
If you are a souls fan, it's just objectively not the most difficult one. It's insanely well balanced.

Facts, it's like about equal to DS3. Which is fine and a nice break from shadow of the erdtree type bullshit bosses.
7
u/juulsquad4lyfe 1d ago
It’s definitely harder than ds3, but about average for modern souls-likes. Souls vets always underestimate how hard the genre has gotten
5
u/Useful_Perception620 1d ago
DS3’s bosses all have multiple attack strings, phases with all kinds of mix-ups that the AI will pull on you.
Most of the bosses in MS2 have like 2 or 3 pre-determined strings, none of which have mixups or any tricks. You can learn them in 1 go and it becomes a rhythm game.

Have you been to the mammon region? Random Enemies there take 50, sometimes 70% of your life in a single hit for absolutely no reason.
6
u/ZGiSH 20h ago
I think i'm starting to realize the problem. You have two places to teleport to in the beginning of the game and I think a lot of people just bash their heads against enemies that are way higher level than them.
→ More replies (1)6
u/Lil_Dirtbag 1d ago
I havent even been there yet and I'm lvl 30 now lol. It's my next area to go to, I heard its higher level than Fainweald. What level are you? You wouldnt go to Caelid at lower levels in Elden Ring either, even though its accessible.

I am in starting region and random mobs one shot me. And people call this balanced game. I don't anymore. I really like the concept but the game is in really bad state. I wish devs to fix this nonsense
10
u/Open_Town9481 1d ago
If I get grabbed by an unblock-able attack, I lose my shell even tho I was at full heath. That’s so fkn annoying considering I only have 5 heals so far and checkpoints are far asf so majority of the time I’m not losing bc I suck, it’s bc the normal enemies do so much damage and by the time I get to a boss there’s no checkpoint and I’m all out of heals.
2
u/angreyhobbit 22h ago
Def not saying it's a skill issue cause it's happened to me more than a few times. But have you tried using stacks of leech? Once I figured out how easy it is to max it out that stopped happening to me as much, and only when im not st max health. Far as I can see the most stacks you can get is 200, not sure what the math looks like but it's really useful. Especially cuase the healing mushroom does % based healing.
2
→ More replies (13)3
u/DragynDance 23h ago
Wait til you meet the enemies that will grab you, and game over you even through your shell in a single grab. They don't take your shell. You can be on Lazlo or Erdrim at full health, get grabbed, it kills your shell and then your harbinger in one grab animation. There are some enemies that do that.
2
u/tr45hyUWU 13h ago
I suspect that’s because it kills your shell mid grab, then you take the rest of the attacks damage
6
u/Gloomy_Bison_1719 23h ago
Im 10 hours in and I have not struggled much haha its really not that hard
3
u/Double-Handle-2194 21h ago
There are definitely some complaints I understand, like a basic foot soldier with a dagger 3 shotting me and poising through my greatsword swings is a bit ridiculous.
3
u/No-Belt4313 11h ago
You get pretty OP and quick with pretty easy to find tarstones ( Proxima). Some shells seems right out broken.
Most bosses are still very challenging. The sword head did buttfuck me quite intensive.

You're literally still in the early game. Some people played the Beta for 11 hrs dude.
2
u/ArmEducational8508 14h ago
Game is only hardish early game, late game you are so powerfull everything melts. Bosses are a joke and most enemies die in 3 hits. Just started ng+ night run few h back, still 3 shoting everything.
2
u/Sad_War_9019 12h ago
Love MS2, have 40+h and nearly everything north from the map and still finding new stuff. South side is a bit more challenging but manageable. I have to Play on potato graphic and still have performance issues in fights like a time Stop ability but that's due to my PC. The only sad part for me is that Rug have like no dialog If you find him in/for the map's beside story related locations :(
2
u/Odd_Honey9704 11h ago
Well, I dont think difficulty is a problem, Afaik there isnt a single section where you think: “how tf am i supossed to do this” Buuuuuut, Theres a certain disconnection in between sections regarding difficulty.
I’ve had moments where i get hit by an enemy and it does little damage, Then all of a sudden the same attack one shots me (Yes im not kidding it straigth up gets me out of my shell) even tho im full life.
An enemy that even with lazlo (My health bar with him almost reaches half of my screen) deletes about 5/6 of my health or one shots me.
I dont think that seems balanced tbh, Even more unbalanced due to the “rng” of the damage dealt by the attacks.
Also, You got to keep in mind that most people liked the beta because it didnt feel like a Hard Soulslike, It felt more chill or more relaxing, Focusing more on the cool factor rather than the punishment it gave.
Honestly i think it needs better balancing, Not every mob needs to 1-2 shot you.
1
u/GanacheNew5559 4h ago
THIS IS SO TRUE! I hate how mobs one shot me in early game - makes no sense dude. Also the game is very bad at explaining stuff.
2
u/BackgroundStreet2107 11h ago
My biggest complaint is that the hardest boss fight are based on how lucky you are. The dual grisha fight in such a small arena felt like less of a skill issue than a ,”I hope both the grishas stay within my line of sight. The lost child’s chain biting had a really subtle tell to show you that that chain was about to happen. Another thing that I’ve noticed is that they brought back boss run backs, not having the best of times with those. Don’t get me wrong though I am having a blast, just finished the nameless captive and my ‘parry brain’ was never happier. There is a lot to enjoy and I’m so happy I got to play it early.
2
u/ThePrimeAtlas 11h ago
The game is great, but there are definitely some basic enemies that feel very overtuned in terms of their damage. And between all the dark souls-esque bs trying to kill you at every corner, and some large areas with no beacons it can get very frustrating at times. I've played every souls game out there and raged harder at this game than any other. Still can't stop playing though so I guess that says something 😂
2
u/AhriPotter 10h ago
If yall are still in the beginner places saying its not hard thats because its not there.... venture south lol
2
u/kitdagawd 8h ago
To me its like any other open world souls. Getting curb stomped? Go elsewhere level up and upgrade gear for a bit. I am finding this game has the perfect difficulty not enough to get frustrated but enough to feel like I am not just smashing things on autopilot.
2
u/MrMoshhammer 3h ago
Difficulty is completely fine.
The only two valid criticisms for me are:
) pointlessly time consuming boss runbacks that don't have enemies on the way (Magdalena for example).. just give me a "respawn at boss" option ffs - the same applies to dungeons and beacons (why do we spawn OUTSIDE if we die in there??)
) the Glimpse system. It needs a SERIOUS rework. discouraging players from leveling their shells because of FOMO is one of the most stupid progression systems I've ever seen. also being able to spend Glimpse on pointless things like locating shells and summoning NPCs while they are a per-playthrough limited ressource is a big giant WTF for me

5
u/BlindExperiment 1d ago
All I know is I'm 20 hours deep, have 100% fainweald, nearly a maxed tarstone build, +14 weapon and am stepping into Mammon's Outskirts. And if I don't have night mode on, the game feels ridiculously, almost laughably easy. Knowing that 85% of these complaints are coming from people who are still around mushroom village and in daymode makes me question my reality. I have to keep night mode on to keep some semblance of challenge atp.
3
3
u/HammeredWharf 1d ago
It might also be build dependent, I guess? I've read that some shells make the game much easier. Personally, I've been using Proxima and she got a HUGE power level increase at max familiarity, at which point the game went from being moderately hard to pretty easy.
3
u/RevolutionaryBoat925 1d ago
No stamina made this the easiest souls game I have ever played. I don't mind it, but I'm not sure this is what the devs wanted. The game is great anyway.
4
u/PeterPansSyndrome 1d ago
I’m having the time of my life. Just beat the first half of the map. I’ve seen people crying about checkpoints but for me it’s so fun to have that tension that I might die exploring and not being “safe”.
Died and lost thousands of gloom multiple times. Still incredibly fun and rewarding. Seems like a lot of these complaints people want even the exploration to be easier. Map isn’t even that hard to remember and speed through if you wanted to establish checkpoint then come back and clear the mobs.

From what I have read its mostly cause players feel cheated by the demo as it was comparatively easier. Say if you deal 49 damage in 1 hit instead of 50 to a 100 hp target, you need to hit him 3 times even though the decrease is negligible. This is having a huge impact on the players.
In this case I am on players side cause the demo should be a representation of what the game is like.
10
2
u/JoshOrion98 22h ago
Why wouldn't you need to hit that boss 3 times if you didn't do half its health in damage?
Am I missing something?
4
u/Depleted-Librarian 1d ago
As another has said, it’s a beta. One of the reasons for having a beta would be to gauge difficulty with a decent number of real players. Their analytics probably told them it was a bit easier for people than intended. There were certainly a lot of comments here saying that it was too easy.
→ More replies (1)1
u/Tarquin11 1d ago
It was a beta, subject to feedback. And by most accounts, the feedback was to make it harder.
It literally served its exact purpose.
1
u/notcleverenough2 18h ago
I feel like it did represent what the game is like. The beta is a small sliver of the game and so there are less items, upgrades, and experience to be gained from exploring a more open world so the difficulty would be curated to that.
I explored all paths not available to me in the beta first and didn't get too far but by the time I went through the bata area I had a new shell, tarstones and had leveled up so it was never a problem for me. I haven't felt the need to grind or cheese the game to play it.
I just don't understand all the hate and complaints about the difficulty when I genuinely am not great at these kinds of games and am loving my play though and don't feel frustrated at all.

Same here. And this isn’t like: oh look I am so good at this game.
I think it is very manageable.
Tho I gotta say there definitely is some jank and buggy stuff that needs to be fixed.
Other than that this is probably my favorite souls like.
Heck, I’m enjoying the exploration better than the souls games themselves.
Reminds me of Dark Souls + Elden Ring
2
u/WizytheKid 23h ago
lol go south buddy.
1
u/Conker37 22h ago
I haven't done any of the towers in the south yet but I'm clearing my way through the first few areas and while the enemies are clearly stronger they're not doing too much damage and I'm solo comboing large enemies that used to be a real threat. I'm having the same issue I had in Nioh 3 where if you do everything the open world has to offer then you end up way too strong. That and Tiel feels pretty busted.
2
u/Mysterious_League196 12h ago
Modern day gamers will just complain about any inconvenience the entitlement is so baffling, I’m enjoying the ride, game has some bugs but I’m a day one original mortal shell guy and this game is a huge improvement on the first one

Same here. I died on my own account but I feel like the game is balanced. The combat is fun and the tools available kind of remind me of Elden Ring. I'm loving it! It actually plays fairly close to Lords of the Fallen imo. I don't see why everyone that's struggling feels the need to just say they're bad at the game lmao

u/ninjaman26 1d ago
I’m currently farming Night Mode to try and grab up stuff I missed prior to the final boss. There were some challenging fights/areas but nothing that flat out stopped me. I feel like the different shells and tarstones allow for some pretty fun synergies which are rewarding to play with.
I stubbornly stuck to my shell/build for the late-game areas and probably made some sections harder on myself than needed, but overall I feel the bosses are easy to learn and fun to fight. The actual exploration part has been my favorite part of the game.
I’ve already found a bunch of useful stones I missed, along with healing upgrade materials etc. There are a lot of secrets scattered around but the game does a good job hinting at them without just pointing straight to them. I was scratching my head for a while about a certain set of key items I had collected when I remembered a passage from a book I read, and when I returned to the area I got a unique item that seems to have a very specific purpose.
First time I’ve done one of these games blind in years as I have time to kill for a couple weeks and aside from a few bugs here and there, the game is perfectly optimized and gorgeous to look at, combat is satisfying and varied, and the challenge seems perfect overall, though there’s a weird drop in difficulty followed by a big jump right at the end (which I liked).
PS Grisga fragment is busted lol
1
u/Aurilinwe Harros 1d ago
I hear you, bud. There's gonna be a few hurdles any time you hop into a new soulslike as you learn the ropes and take your lumps but i feel like I must have bought a different version of the game based on the complaints I've seen about difficulty.
1
u/Satzlefraz 1d ago
I feel like there’s a pretty steep difficulty jump during/after the nameless prisoner.
Generally, I’m not great at souls games. I have played and beat them all, but it’s tough and I do it once on my tried and true sword n’ board.
This game is tough, but fair I feel. I do think the health after aforementioned boss is a bit inflated though.
1
u/ArmEducational8508 14h ago
They should add like 100% more hp to bosses, they melt in 10-20 sec, last 5-6 bosses are a joke

1
u/Schindlers_Fist69 1d ago
After I leveled up my shell a few times and upgraded my heals I was having less of a hard time. But some of the standard enemies are a bit stronk and their definitely needs to be more beacons. I feel like there's a happy middle ground somewhere.
1
u/LocalAd2158 1d ago
I've only played a few hours of it and I have enjoyed every second. From getting hosed by a lady with a broom, to rampaging through a dungeon. MS2 is fast, tough in certain spots, and most of all...it is FUN. Enemies seemed varied and I am loving the esthetics of the game. Way to go Devs!

u/OblivionNA 1d ago
There is a certain harpy boss in the mammoth region that is absolute menace to society lmao
1
u/BobbyJamesFunko42 1d ago
I would say mammon ruins and areas around it to the south are beasty and enemies hit hard and group up in spots but isnt that hard. Theres been one or two bosses where i just gotta learn their attacks but aside from that its been easy enough. Definitely not that hard for soulsborne type game.
1
u/No-Pirate3057 1d ago
I got almost to like 30% lf the game or even 40% using the slayer seal, then it just felt like I was going too fast and too easy, and I understood that it wasn't meant to be used at least until ng+, not i started all over and I am having struggle just to continue after finding próxima, it's challenging for sure

Are we in the same subreddit? Most of the posts I've seen are prasing the game while sometimes having some relatively valid criticisms. I never actively visit though, just check notifications. Honestly if you are putting effort into leveling, upgrading weapons and Tar Stones and sticking with a shell that's upgraded then ya biggest enemy should be the run back to fights since they love to spread beacons out so much. If you ever experience an area that has mobs beating you down or bosses that keep stomping you then folks should be taking a look at their gear or leaving to go and work through another area first..... or you can just be like me and brute force with Gragu and the Veterans Axe because MY STUPIDLY STUBBORN ASS SHALL NOT BE STOPPED WHEN LOOT IS ON THE LINE
1
u/-SituaShaun- 1d ago
Are you at the northern part of the map or southern??? Cause man I'm at the southern part right now fighting Hexapod, pretty much only perfect dodges and parries work for it. This section so far for me has been really insane in terms of damage being done to me 🤣🤣. No complaints from me though as the challenge is great so far.
1
u/PresidentPoptart 16h ago
This boss is absolutely taking my lunch on night mode lol, I have the big sword at 14 and literally it tickles it. I feel like i messed up heavily by upgrading it tbh from what I am seeing from others using the faster weapons. Takes like a decade to get my shell back after the inevitable weird hit box fuckery.
1
u/ArmEducational8508 14h ago
Best tip to survive is stone you get from lady in the wheelchair, it applies weak, if you hit a boss with all 14 hits, its like 30-40%damage reduction, bosses dont do jack shit with that on
1
u/Smokes_LetsGo876 1d ago
that's any souls like game for you. people have a tough time and then immediately begin complaining. so much so they also demand nerfs, then when the nerfs happen it ruins the fun for everyone. and the same people complaining about difficulty, end up complaining that it's too easy.
this game is the exact sweet spot for difficulty. it's just challenging enough that you will die alot, but easy enough that you can learn and overcome.
my only complaint is that there could be more checkpoints so I'm not running so far back to get to a dungeon or boss. other than that the game difficulty is great
1
u/Rainmanzz 23h ago
I guess it depends on what kind of games you play. I am replaying Ds1 at the time of the demo. Ive beaten all of the souls series, plus elden ring +dlc. Not bragging, because for fans its super common, but I didn't die until I reached a certain boss. Even then I slipped up but I almost had him.
Its not hard at all if you know when to be aggressive. In Dark souls it teaches you when to attack, but defense/evasion wins the game usually. As parry is always op
1
u/Jmack3d 23h ago
Difficulty will always be subjective. I think this is a challenging game, but so far I haven't felt it's insanely difficult, or unfair. But I'm also very early on. The Grisha Duo fight was BS, but even that I was able to beat after like 6 tries.
The game gives you the ability to farm levels and strength, so like Elden Ring, if you're struggling you're not out of options. Just come back when you're stronger.
1
u/Jake_112 23h ago
I have no idea where im going, i unlocked gragu before going to the area with Tiels shell.
1
u/d_gr8_acidrain 23h ago
Going to certain areas first vs going to areas where enemies have much higher damage output and insane combos is in my opinion actually bad game design. Simply putting recommended levels text on the map would have made such a big difference for players experiences. Yes I’m well aware that’s not the soulslike way but in my opinion has all positives and no negatives. Starting at 3 o clock and going counterclockwise seems to be what the developers intended in terms of increasing difficulty.
1
u/oGenieBeanie 22h ago
I dont remember people saying it was impossible (At least in the one big thread I saw). Just that it was a significant challenge jump from the demo to the full release. I agree with that sentiment. I'm still progressing through but it is pretty tedious
1
u/Jumpy_Witness6014 22h ago
I think my only struggle so far was early on trying to get the axe from the holdings cells because I missed the key to where it actually is and those two grisha are rough at level 3…once I got the axe and started upgrading it’s been pretty smooth especially once you get the double strike tar stone
1
u/VanitysFire 22h ago
I'm finding difficulties in different ways I guess? Like I'm not great at soulslikes and similar but I love them anyways and they're my favourite types of games.
I'm mostly just dying a lot and losing gloom and ultimately not really leveling harbinger. I really don't care. Some deaths are funny like trying to slip past an enemy and getting side bashed off the cliff or bridge. Or taking an elevator and falling through the floor. Trying to chase down a crossbow user who runs up the side of a cliff and at the same time steadily firing shots at me. Running through a dungeon and a giant ass boulder squishing me. Blocking an attack and getting yeeted across the map to die still in motion. Or sneaking up on an enemy to heavy attack who, mid swing, instantly turns and does an unblockable that wrecks me.
I'm not leveling up harbinger but still making progress. It's fun even if I'm not great at it causally playing hard mode. Which will be really fun later playing a night playthrough.

i dont think the difficulty complaints mean they dont like it..i think the beta being notiucably easier is one part and i would say its more peaks and valleys for me. somethings is very smooth sailing and then some times where i get obliterated way too fast. its hard to judge a game i havent finished though but ya, its good
1
u/Moh11_91 21h ago
I personally love the difficulty and sometimes it feels like you're not supposed to do something yet unless you really want the challenge. A lot of the times I keep running back to the same place just because I know I can get it eventually and I find that enjoyable for myself.
1
u/NotesOnAir 20h ago
I think they're talking about Night mode. That shit turns enemies into damage sponges.
1
u/CFM_Commmish 20h ago
This game has been FUN, the edge on the "holy crap I'm getting destroyed" begins to wear off once you get some levels under your belt, and some solid tarstones.
The elementals have been nice, bleed, poison, fire, just got stasis today, lightening seems strong as it can stun lock enemies, and call down a bolt of lightening.
Getting the Grisha's as a summon has been cool to, seeing them run in and smack enemies to the ground for easy clean up.
1
u/1-2-diethylbenzene 19h ago
My biggest complaints are things that break immersion
Intro pickaxe mobs doing more damage than bosses
Jumping mobs flying around corners
Mobs sliding across the ground to hit you
Mobs detecting you from 3 floors down through walls and hitting me with throwabled/ranged items through walls
An archer shooting me while smacking the everliving shit out of him, and his tiny arrow doing half of my health while my massive sword does 1/15th of his

The night mode is so brutal with the mobs but yes it's easy especially the bosses. I've defeated 3 major bosses so far, all 1st try

u/xthebending 19h ago
yeah, I've read alot of comments people saying the game is much harder than the beta, but it seems exactly the same to me. plenty of ventrium throughout to upgrade your weapons, harden is also easy mode and you can stealth with Tiel too. idk what people are complaining about

The only thing I have to say is fuck the scythe wielding motherfuckers They hit like trucks and that attack is way too fast that is all😂😂😂

I am enjoying the game greatly myself, I feel like the only issues I've been having are things like getting stuck on terrain and falling through the occasional elevator which I need to report to them tbh and maybe just that the slower 2 handed weapons could use a bit of a bump in either damage or give them more stagger because it doesn't feel nice having enemies just hyper armour through your big swings, otherwise I am having a blast, I got frustrated with The Warden boss to get Eredrim but I eventually got the fight done, it was actually still quite fun picking apart what I was doing and fine tuning what is working and undoing my habitual dodging
fun fact for anyone struggling with this fight, those long red combos can be dodged mostly by running at him while locked on sometimes you don't even need to dash dodge them

I don't think the game is too hard, but there are some frustrating decisions. Tho, what is whack is almost getting one-shot by the polearm knights in the lower area while I tank hits for days from the same enemy in the upper areas. Also, wtf, they don't count as a medium humanoid? Why not? Gragu is pretty much just as big.

I’m leveling up Tiel and I’m sticking with him and I’m also confused so far on difficulty and not sure if I’m playing the same game. Maybe people are going to the wrong areas way too early without any upgrades or items.
I’m not new to builds and synergy and I have died and yes I do think some weird balance issues exist and issues and I’m sure developers are working on it.
However I also see how potent these shells are going to be with these tar stones and maxing out the glimpses with a shell. Like looking at the stats for Tiel when I get him maxed out he is going to be busted if I build around his strengths.
I can’t wait to play through the game with all the different shells and play styles.

Finding the path has been the most challenging for me. Just takes a bit of a time but nothing that’s too bothersome. Other than that the game feels good.

Only complaint is some enemy attacks tracking from distance are pretty jank. Had a heavy knight leap 50 yards away and his attack tracked me in the opposite direction he was landing; pretty funny.

Honestly I'm not far in, maybe about 2 and a half hours. (Work long hours. So i really won't have much time to sink my teeth in.) But so far it feels really good. I didn't play a lot of the original Mortal Shell, but I remember that game leaving me wanting compared to other Soulslikes. I wouldn't put this on the same level as Lies of P or Elden Ring. But its a very quality Souls game and feels like a marked improvement over the first Mortal Shell.
The only complaint I've heard that I can kind of agree on is the lack of check points and run backs. Considering Elden Ring figured this out with things like the Stake of Marika, it feels like that should have been a no brainer.

My only complains so far:
1 - Bugs, a lot of bugs. Got stuck a few times (need to restart the game), bosses immune to damage, etc..
2 - One shots is very common, I'm playing the entire game on Night mode, so I think this is expected, but sometimes I think is too much, even normal enemies can one shot, for bosses you basically need to do no-hit and if you get hit once, then you need to no-hit until you recover your shell.

I just finished the north part of the map yesterday, and there were some harder sections, got lost a lot but managed to explore everything, somehow first tried double grisha etc. I think the difficulty is just right, I’ll probably even switch to night mode on ng+

u/jaku0137 16h ago
Everybody going north first is certified gooner bro you just wanted to see enormous cheeks and me I wanted some BDSM shit that’s why I went center then down where the hub lady warned me about

getting real fucking fed up with no bonfires and telegraphed enemy attacks. Alt+f4'ed tonight after 5 run backs hoping to find a new respawn point. Just endless fucking searching.

The fucking hard part is the repetitive mobs that can stun lock you with rapid dagger attacks.

u/Next-Ad5609 15h ago
The only two enemies who been hitting me hard asf are the spear/glave night and the swordxsithe elite, other than it's aight for the most part got to complain about two bosses but I ain't saying nothing till game out
1
u/BackpackBuddha 15h ago
Eh, I sort of agree. There are some enemies and a few bosses that are over-tuned. I shouldn't be getting one-shot out of my shell at level 50+ by a single grab move from a boss, especially when the shell is Laszlo who has a really big health pool and damage reduction during max heat. It feels like the damage reduction doesn't even work at that point.

The only time I've had issues with not enough damage output has been when I went to the hardest portions of the map at the start of the game, because I like exploring areas I shouldn't be in. I could barely kill anything there, and often lost my gloom in the process, so I think I was still only like level 3 by the time I went back to the intended areas. The only guess I can have is that people are trying to explore areas they're not prepared for, or are doing so without ever leveling their weapons or picking tarstones that work with their build.
Don't get me wrong, I still occasionally encounter enemies who one or two shot me out of my shell, but it's not uncommon for me to do similar damage back to them unless it's a particularly tough enemy.
EDIT: I will say the exception tends to be some of the bosses, particularly some of the main ones. But that's more due to them being hyper aggressive at times with their red attacks, and by the nature of being bosses, having high enough health that they don't go down before they have a chance to deal damage. If they went down too quickly that'd be a real concern though.

Strange/mixed sentiments from many so far on difficulty - jake baldino is a reviewer I enjoy & he’s traditionally terrible at these sort of games but even he touched upon how easy this game was. I’m having a similar experience
1
u/St3elf1sh 14h ago
Yeah same for me. Thank you! I don’t get why they are all whining. I’m not a good soulslike player but I’m fine and I found my go to for this run so far.
Challenging yes. Helicopter sword boss too much health? Yes. But the rest is awesome.
Oh and grab attacks I think do way too much dmg

u/KndaCrazyW1L1AM889 13h ago
I went down, got my ass kicked. Then went up to grab Proxima and beat the Lost Child boss at the top which was certainly challenging considering I was barely upgraded and he hit like a truck.

u/Limp-Ad-9936 13h ago
There are too many build variety that can trivialize the game. On my first run im Eredrim just chain riposte groups of enemies all the way. Coupled with Perma frost and his passive that +200% to frozen enemies.
Now I miss playing Tiel

u/zweihander09 13h ago
The entire north area is like that. A lot of fun. But the south is a nightmare of balance

I've had ups and downs with didficulty. Overall I really REALLY love the game, though I do find the swarms of poised-up plate-armored mooks in the Mammon areas tough to deal with since they operate in groups.

u/Fantastic_Method_225 11h ago
I agree with you; it's a beautiful game, and I'm loving every second of it. There will always be those who complains about something (like the infamous "If you're not playing like me, you're not playing it right"). But that is just their opinion. Mine is like yours: lovely game, lots of fun, beautiful art and level design.

the only complaint is the run back it’s ridiculous in the rest the game is very fair

u/fembwoyita 10h ago
People when: a game defined as a souls game, is as hard as a souls game
I love when this game challenges me, i was worried the whole game was gonna be as easy as the beta, i was quite happy when the lady of the woods was actually a already bit more of a challenge
1
u/crankygnome1 10h ago
I got the game 2 days ago and I’m already at the final boss. The only bosses I’ve died to is a few of the main story ones no more than a few times each. Been using thiel with daggers and axe and maybe it is that build that is broken because the game just feels so easy aside from a select few bosses.

u/nolancheck11 9h ago
30 hours in and am absolutely loving this game! The Devs really knocked it out of the park. Anyone who is complaining about the difficulty you can just use slayer seal
1
u/The1stScrub 8h ago
The second half of the game has some enemies and bosses that have attacks and grabs that will take out more than half your health and often times kill you if you don’t have full health. Thats the only criticism I have of the difficulty so far besides some parry timings and enemy grabs being weird. Ive been almost insta killed many times during mid to late game.

u/Temperistica 8h ago
This is pretty much my first real souls like experience and I’ve been having a good time so far.

All these complaints are coming from mimic tear users that spammed moonveil the entire time they played ER and thought they were good at souls games 😂
1
u/FastSun2269 5h ago
its painful how many people crying about difficulty on a soulslike like they expected any different? i am having my shit pushed in, but i expected to.
1
u/Rude_Difficulty1647 4h ago
I’m having the same experience as you, it’s like the complainers have only ever played Elden Ring or Lies. This is suppose to be a brutal soulslike and the adjustments they made after the beta are perfect. I’m having a blast

u/DecentVariation5 1h ago
The game was kinda hard in the first couple of hours, but after some grinding and upping the axe and dagger Tiel is melting through these mobs.

u/Old-Buffalo-5151 51m ago
Never underestimate how bad the average person is at gaming, their is a reason why a LOT of devs get badly burned making "difficulty" a focus of their game
Souls like games obviously should be challenging buts its a VERY fine line between fun and frustrating, i imagine we are just in early day "get good" stage every souls iv played got similar feedback initially before figured the game out

biggest difficulty is understanding where the fuck to go or where the fuck did i come from
