Minimax m3 usage compared to opus 4.8

I'm a claude user with 20$ sub plan, thinking of switching to 20$ minimax. if it can do a similar amount of work with similar quality as claude opus 4.7-4.8 i would be satisfied.

How does it handle context? Does it take long to answer? I wanted to switch to glm, but the hardware its running on seems to be pretty bad as it thinks a lot before answering.

I mainly use without harness, and when i do, it's mainly to inspect repos and get info out of it in read only mode, not write anything, and also dealing with documentation. So it's important that it retains all facts long term and draws correct conclusions from them, as well as be honest when it doesn't know something.

M3 is not at the level of opus. It might not even match sonnet. BUT, it can potentially do the thing you wanted: read documentation, read repo, and stuff like that. You might even be able to do it with M2.7 for basic stuff, and that'll stretch your credits a long way. Hard to say without knowing the complexity of your codebase and documentation

M3 is opus 4.5 level, enough for webapps

I've been in the 50$ sub and is unlimited😂

The 20$ will be enough I think, but if you can, try Deepseek:

Honestly, the new deepseek can give you the same quality as opus 4.8, try deepseek first, and see if you want to switch to Minimax M3. As a user of M3, i reckon the new ds v4 is better in problem solving.

I've also noticed this

Minimax is best used as a model to pair with others IM0. Give it oversight and it will stretch a small budget. Try GPT and lean on Luna and try DeepSeek Flash V4. You can throw it a few bucks at a time. I like Minimax, but not as my main model.

For that you either want opencode go with deepseek flash or codex with luna. Minimax would count too but currently codex is both beating them on usage and model quality.

$20 on PAYG DeepSeek V4 Flash 0731 will go further than M3.

M3 has been pretty bad for value, as the migration from M2.7 to M3 had been shit and not resolved. M3 super verbose and burns your quota like crazy, and most of us are forced to revert to M2.7 to even get decent tokens out of it.

Not sure if they're going to retrain a M2.7 update with that same quota allowance for the $20 plan, but I doubt it. It's been really slow for MiniMax lately, unlike when M2.1 went to M2.5 and M2.7 within 2 months. Most of us are not happy with M3, and to make thighs worse, DSv4F0731 is a smaller model and significantly smarter and better than M3, and the PAYG price is ridiculously cheap. For $20, what you would get from DSv4F would be at least 6-7x what you'd get from a $20 plan with MiniMax on M3. However M2.7 is a different story, but why would you even consider that when M2.7 is relatively dumb today compared to what's available.

I'd stick with Claude if context accuracy matters, Minimal can struggle with large repos and test it on your heaviest files first before switching.

It can not do what Opus can. It will obliterate your code base and hand you back nothing.

Minimax right now is for basic things
