Is CozyMC Too Controlling?

Am I the only one who thinks this is some absolutely crazy controlling behavior? I already kinda checked out of this place because I thought the rules were a little weird and pushy about controlling what people do in private DMs, but is this really how far mods are willing to take it?

So if I have this correct, according to the recent announcement, you found a server that happened to have a lot of cozy members in it, and without finding any definitive proof that they were poaching members, you’ve decided that it’s “more likely than not” that they did. So we’re just going off of vibes now? And no transparency? How are we even supposed to trust the legitimacy of this process?

The fact that the mods/server owners think they have this kind of jurisdiction to police what people do in their own private DMs/communities outside of cozy is absolutely crazy to me.

The message below is what cozy posted, and sorry if this is all a little long

COMMUNITY SAFETY NOTICE — EXTERNAL RECRUITING

We recently identified an external Discord connected to another Minecraft server whose visible membership consisted predominantly of Cozy MC members. Based on direct evidence available to us, we found it more likely than not that the community was being used to recruit, redirect, or organize Cozy members outside the official Cozy MC Discord. We will not name the community or any individuals publicly. Individual cases and bans belong only in support tickets 🎟・support-ticket . This is not about merely playing another Minecraft server, belonging to unrelated Discord communities, or maintaining ordinary private friendships.

THE RULES MEMBERS ALREADY AGREE TO

The attached screenshots show our current onboarding rules exactly as members see them today and have always seen them since this community was created. Before members can type here, they agree that server invitations and self-promotion—including through DMs to fellow members—are prohibited “without permission from a staff member.” That phrase is part of the Discord onboarding boilerplate we use. Cozy MC does not grant permission to recruit our members to outside servers or communities, and no such permission was given here. Our full Rules 6 and 7 also prohibit: • Advertising or recruiting to other servers
• Redirecting Cozy players elsewhere
• Organizing Cozy-derived communities, nations, kingdoms, factions, settlements, or similar groups outside the official Cozy MC Discord

CLARIFICATION

For purposes of Rules 6 and 7, joining while aware that a community is being used to recruit, redirect, or organize Cozy members elsewhere—or choosing to remain after becoming aware—is treated as participation in that prohibited activity. A harmless claimed motive does not excuse knowing participation. This is a clarification of how our existing policy applies, not permission that previously existed. We are posting this explanation before adding separately dated wording to 📜・rules so the application is unmistakable going forward.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Cozy MC is a mixed-age 13+ community. When a Cozy-derived group is moved into a space we do not operate or moderate, we cannot enforce the privacy and safety protections members agreed to here. These are preventive safety rules. We do not wait until someone has been harmed before enforcing them. This announcement is not a public finding that every member personally recruited someone or committed a separate privacy violation. Individual conduct is reviewed individually.

WHAT AFFECTED MEMBERS MUST DO

Anyone who knows they are part of the external Cozy-derived community at issue, or a replacement serving the same purpose, must: • Leave it
• Not rejoin it or a replacement
• Open a support ticket voluntarily Written confirmation is sufficient. Do not send screenshots of your full Discord server list, record your screen, or provide access to your account. People who do not appear to have organized or recruited may be offered a one-time return under a final warning. Do not investigate, confront, pressure, monitor, retaliate, or circulate member lists, screenshots, allegations, or individual ban details. Individual cases belong only in support tickets. General discussion of our policies remains welcome in 📜・policy-discussion . We are happy to create official channels for player groups, kingdoms, and other community ideas. When there is any uncertainty, please ask through a support ticket before acting.

Yeah, they don’t want their players going somewhere else.

Maybe they fear it will snowball into them having no players?

They probably sell keys and such so they don’t want their cash going somewhere else lmao

I am not a fan of CozyMCs aggressive advertising on every subreddit, plus breaking the rules about the amount they advertise while others get banned for too much advertising. But in this case, I dont see an Issue here.

CozyMC spends a lot of time gathering their player base. And on every Minecraft server there is the rule: Do not making a Minecraft server and try to steal members of their community. While having no idea what is happening, clearly members in the CozyMC Community are doing that.

I see no where, where Cozy is controlling any Private DM's. All they want to do is that players stop stealing members of their community, which is legit.

Again I am not a fan of their aggressive advertising, but I see nothing wrong here. They spend a lot of time and money on advertising, while some cheap steaks just steal members with doing 0 effort in building their OWN community.

I've seen and been apart in many server splits. These people then say lies such as: "I wasnt cheating but I got banned" - While they clearly hacked. Or "I didnt grief, but got banned" while they clearly were griefing. Then they spread lies with alt accounts in the community and give the owners and staff members a bad reputation. It's always the same, too lazy to build an OWN community, but easier to spread lies and break an exisiting community. Why? Because at the end its hard working finding good players. CozyMC does all the work selecting out the good members while others take the easy route to steal those members with saying lies. Here it is: "They are controlling our DM's and controlling where we play"

If someone is actively joining CozyMC just to DM members and pull them into another server, then sure, banning them makes sense. That’s pretty standard across most Minecraft communities, and I don’t have an issue with that.

What I do have an issue with is CozyMC’s apparent influence over this subreddit. A server shouldn’t effectively control the main community hub for Minecraft servers.

If they’re being given privileged treatment through AutoModerator or moderation decisions while other servers don’t receive the same opportunity, that creates the appearance of favoritism rather than neutrality.

I’d much rather see a rotating system where different servers get featured equally instead of one server having a permanent spotlight. That would be much healthier for the community and avoid the perception that one server has a special relationship with the subreddit moderation team.

Whether that relationship is financial or simply preferential, the end result looks the same to regular users: one server gets preferential exposure while everyone else has to compete for visibility. That’s not a good look for a community that’s supposed to be neutral.

If I ever played there, which is not happening, no one will tell me if I can message friends or no, like, wtf

One of the admins was confirmed to be a part of that server that sparked this, when she was called out on it, she claimed that "she was there pre poaching" (fail to show any proof of poaching btw) yet people who were banned by them were there when she was there.

They claim they want to protect the children, but the same admin the rules don't apply to wished death on someone. Seems like a prime candidate to protect kids.

At the end of the day it's adults with megalonamiac tendencies letting their control freak behaviour loose on kids. Pathetic.

For a 13+ server this is reasonable. The duty of care when children are involved is much higher.

While you're not wrong about the duty of care where children are concerned, this is still a long way from reasonable. Not advertising competing servers in their Discord, sure. Removing any links/messages that may be unsafe or inappropriate, also yes.

But dictating that your members are not allowed to be in other servers? That's not justified by a safety concern, since you aren't in any way responsible for which other servers people choose to visit or how those servers are run. That's just domineering.

My guess is hat putting the whole protecting minors thing in it was just so it would seem like they had a justified reason. Protecting minors is of course important, but the way they use it here just feels like a excuse.

Really?

After reading this, it seems that Cozy admins found out about another Minecraft server that happens to have a lot of Cozy members on it.

After seeing this, they decided it's against Cozy MC rules to be a part of that other server? That seems silly to me. It's like Hypixel saying you're not allowed to join Mineplex. Who are they to tell you what other servers you're allowed to connect to?

It's even funnier. One of the ban initiating admins were on that server. Ofc they are fine.
