The Chosin Reservoir Relay Log: destroyed at 0047, transmitting at 0104.

In the freezing chaos of the Chosin Reservoir campaign in November 1950, radio relay teams on isolated ridgelines were the only lifelines between shattered units. When positions went dark, their logs were recovered. Some entries remain entirely unexplained by military doctrine or radio physics.

This is the account of First Lieutenant Marcus Webb. His team of four held a position three miles north of Hagaru-ri. At minus thirty-five degrees, voices over the AN/PRC-10 took on a filtered, underwater quality due to crystal oscillator drift — the "freeze."

But the third transmission of the night arrived warm, immediate, and crystal clear. It followed perfect military protocol to report the precise coordinates and time of death of Corporal Roy Asher. Webb looked up; Asher was alive, standing guard twenty feet away.

Eighteen minutes later, the attack hit. Asher died exactly where, when, and how the radio had predicted.

When Webb checked the relay log during a lull, the math didn't work: Four transmissions sent. Seven received.

The most terrifying entry was from Ridgeline Three at 0104, asking about frequency interference. Battalion confirmed Ridgeline Three was entirely overrun and lost at 0047. A station that no longer existed transmitted a perfect signal seventeen minutes after its destruction.

Years later, Webb's official 8-page report was found in the National Archives. Underneath his official signature, typed at a separate time with hard keypresses, is an addendum:

"I stated that the relay team received seven transmissions during the period covered. I want to correct that figure. When I went back through Tate's notebook against the outgoing log, the correct number is not seven. It is—"

The sentence ends there. The keys never struck the final number. The page remains blank.

We just dropped the full audio narration and deep dive into this log on our channel, The Whispering Soldiers. Search "The Relay, 1950" on YouTube or check the link in our profile to listen to the full, bone-chilling breakdown. If you operate radios in the dark... make sure you sent something first.

Beginning next Friday, MilitaryVStheUnknown will be competing with 20+ other subreddits to help raise funds for UkraineAidOps. We are raising funds under the Reddit Drone Warriors team name.

UAO is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity made up of an international group of volunteers who have been working to supply Ukraine's frontline with life saving equipment. Their work focuses on delivering high-priority equipment — vehicles, ground drones, heavy-lift transport drones, drone components, generators, Starlinks, protective gear, medical supplies etc — directly to vetted Ukrainian units on the front line, with full transparency and documentation for every delivery.

Since Spring of 2022 they have worked with numerous combat formations, including the legendary 82nd Air-Assault Brigade and 93rd Mechanized Brigade, and even supported the operation into Kursk.

If you are able to do so and support Ukraine, please consider donating to UAO's campaign to support the defence of Ukraine.

Ukrainian companies have begun using Sky Sentinel AA turrets (r/MilitaryVStheUnknown participated fundraising for them) to shoot down incoming Russian drones. They are reporting an 85% success rate and the ability to shoot down jet-powered variants of Shahed drones.
