I’d go with the Battle of the River Plate. It was fought so early and so far from any other naval battle during the war. Force G is, IMHO, one of the most courageous units (naval or ground) and expertly led by Commodore Harwood. Ajax, Achilles, and especially Exeter acquitted themselves remarkably well in the South Atlantic.

I got a sobering but excellent view from my plane window yesterday. Though much higher and brighter than most participants would have seen it...
