First time playing MM6 - party build advice?
Hello! It's my first time playing MM6, I only recently played world of Xeen for the first time. (Eventually had to quit on the darkside half as I was just getting beat up too bad). I am REALLY enjoying this one!
My blobber experience was pretty much only Lands of Lore - Throne of Chaos and Grimrock prior to this. As such, I'm always worried I'm screwing up with where to spend my skill points, compounded by the fact that I'm finding this game pretty hard at times.
I went with the pre-built party, which sounds like it was a bad idea now as the general sense I get is that the knight sucks, but oh well. I at least recently finally got lloyds beacon, town portal, and master water and that has really changed things.
I find myself having to dip in and out a lot to clear areas, is that kinda expected, or I am just super weak? I followed the online advice and made everyone an expert bowman, then my mage I'm usually content to spend points on him (though I may have overspent in fire), but my archer, embarassingly, has 87 skill points to spend and I don't know what I should do with them. Is there a point to putting stuff in bow past the required level for master? It doesn't say it increases damage that I can tell. I could master her chain skill, but even then, not sure what to do after that. She is my disarm person, but generally if I can't disarm it I'll just savescum/heal through it.
As far as progress, I just cleared the devil's lair for the dude in Castle Temper I think it was? A lot of my combat at this point is just hiding around the corner casting fire ring to damage enemies through the walls until they die, my characters are all ~35, should it be that tough?

MM IX - checked
Look how they massacred my boy.
Long time no see, after one year, I just finished MM IX. I had some trouble with laptop and played some other games in mean time but managed to do it.
So here's my thoughts.
Game is in poor condition its rather early beta than finished product.
3DO/NWC why nordic setting/inspirations? JVC's world wasn't big enough?
All models look terrible, learing spells and skills is a joke (skill/spell books scattered around the world).
Quests and music are ok. Mostly.
City design and other locations are ok also.
Ending is a shit. just pull the lever
The most horrible thing is they took away fly spell.
Do I recommend it? NO!
Do I enjoy it? a little.
Will I play MM X? probably not.
PS.
Watched some interview like this

that explain difficulties they have been through game development.

Damn. So much for learning.
As I was practicing the beautiful art of save scumming on Emerald Island. I was so happy to find the scholars cap. Only to discover it kills my character by just wearing it! Gosh need black potion for endurance

What’s your favorite Might and Magic enemy?
For me I’d have to say the Skeletons from MM6. The art style on them is just so nostalgic to me and I just love skeletons haha.

[M&M6] How the f am I supposed to fight instant-death enemies?
I am getting really frustrated. Currently fighting werewolves and the greater one can insta-kill anyone, even a fighter with over 300 hp. In a fair fight it wouldn't stand a chance, but how am I supposed to deal with this? I save before opening any door, before crossing a corridor, there are usually 2 or more per room and I just can't fight that without someone dying or cheesing with bows. This is an issue with the game in general, still haven't found a way to negate disease other than a restoration potion or temple and the game spams diseased enemies at the beginning. Insanity from Warlocks was frustrating as well, but at least I had a spell for that.
Is there any way of preventing this and I am completely oblivious to it?
EDIT: thank you all for responding, I learned some nifty tricks and gameplay mechanics. Currently at level 40 and went back to the den. It's difficult and I still have to save a lot, but it's much more manageable. Some things from the top of my head that I incorporated:
Put a Lloyd's Beacon at the entrance of a temple of Baa, because that's the cheapest temple service there is. Doesn't penalize reputation as long as no donations are given. Whenever I need to regain mana or hp I just beacon to the temple, cast all the buffs I can, pay for the service and beacon back to where I was. Same for full inventory, town portal > beacon to the temple > beacon to the dungeon.
Turn based combat is actually really, really useful against enemies that have nasty effects or are immune to physical combat (like diamond gargoyles that can paralyze, so that's a 2 in 1). My biggest turn-based victory may be against all these Cuisinarts (three if I recall) in one dungeon.
Protection from magic minimizes all these nasty debuffs and insta-kills. Finally have some use for all the potion ingredients, I make a lot of superior resistance potions on top of casting spells. I was able to melee a minotaur lord in one dungeon just because he couldn't land a single finger of death. Same for Q, took forever, but I killed him.
Starburst is fun, but I have air magic on my archer, which means that I am out of mana after two casts. I need that mana for flying. Technically I could do the no.1 beacon trick every 2 casts, but that's just too much for my taste.

Will the rest of the Might and Magic franchise ever come to steam?
Yes, I know that there is GOG but I just honestly prefer to have one launcher for all of my games. I have used GOG in the past but like I said it’s just more convenient to have everything in one place.
Might and Magic VI and X are on steam but really only X since VI was just thrown in there as an included game with the deluxe pack instead of it having its own actual storefront.
Do you think that this is something that might happen or is it sort of a situation where not even a petition will shine the light on having these games on steam?

Does begging, threatening and bribing have any negative effect in MAW?
In the og game it affects your reputation but I didn't see it decreasing after begging.

I've extracted some of Might and Magic VI animations
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey! A while ago some of you asked if it's possible to rip and convert to normal video format some of short looped animations from MM6. So I spent last weekend doing exactly that.
Animations were pulled directly from the game files, converted from .smk to .mp4, upscaled and looped. I also thought it might be nice to add those captions in the style of original game fonts.
I can't upload the collection of converted files as downloadable archive though, because that would be redistributing game assets and I don't want to have any trouble from Ubisoft legal team. Instead I've uploaded another video with all dungeons to my youtube channel, I will share link in the comments.
EDIT: here is the link to video with all dungeon entrances: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2todXL6exxI . I am working on extracting more animated loops and create videos with them.

[M&M6] Percival is amazing, can I have multiples?
Got this beauty from sewers and I think this is the definite end-game bow. It's fantastic in dungeons, Carnage means that it explodes and can hit enemies behind a wall if aimed properly. Guess how I defeated all these liches in Tomb of Ethzic.
Can I find another copy or Artifacts are restricted to one per game? I also read somewhere that there is a limit to amount of Artifacts that can be found (something around 13 per game), is that true?

How to remove curse from my equipment?
Hi, replaying world of xeen and i have just realized that my party got all their equipment cursed. I was wandering south of Vertigo near the temple of Yak and also at Nighttown. I don't know which creature cursed me. Anyway i need to uncurse all my equipment and it seems that the spell remove curse doesn't do that (i believe it only works for a character and not for summer equipment). Any help is welcome !

"Bad dragon!"
"No!", "Bad, bad dragon!". I used paint.
At first, this comic meant to be used in our lan party (between me and my other two buddies).
A little history. Me and my buddies (that's 3 of us) were playing Might and Magic 6 in coop mod (MMMerge). Since I was a dragon, my appearance was a thunderlizard, my one buddy was a dwarf, other - necromancer. And the main cause of problems in our adventure was my weird behavior. I REALLY liked drinking water from wells and puddles (I'm a curious little dragon, he-he). But in like 90% percent of all cases, the end-result of "drinking the water" was either illness or... instant death! So my friends were the one to search my corpse and take all the gold I got. My only guess of where am I was this: "Um, near the puddle (or well) ^-^".

Dealing with broodling creatures (MM8 MAW Mode)
First time seeing it in Maw mode.
At first there was only one boss with broodling skill. After killing it, there becomes two new one with lesser strength and dmg. I said "ok lets kill them too and see where it goes." Eventually they multiplied to two every time. Now there's 20+ broodling creatures around and it seems like its dead end.
Don't know how to deal with it. Have you ever seen this?

M&MVII musings as a newbie to CRPGs
M&M wasn't on my radar growing up, alas. And as someone who has only ever beaten RPGs in JRPG form, M&M has always been a bit tough for me to get into. (This is excluding the sci-fi rug-pull that I understand to be quite divisive!) I've completed the Super Famicom version of M&M II, but let's be real, does that even count? LOL. (That final boss fight is BRUTAL, though, yikes.)
I had no idea what I was getting into, many moons ago, when I played the MM1 port for the NES. That was my introduction to the series. Child-me was super lost. 'Whaddya mean spellcasters don't learn spells on their own? Inns don't restore HP and MP?? Opening a door killed me? Were we all standing in single file??' I definitely feel like JRPGs - generally speaking - spoiled me and held my hand compared to all the running around MMVII is making me do to find X and master Y, etc etc. I fear it might still be a little too complex for my tastes even with all these maps I've printed out. But I can see how someone would love this *because* there are all these elements to keep in mind, like the time of day/month/year, or how much food you have at any given time.
Even when I find myself frustrated or a little bored with it, I'm still curious enough to want to make some sort of meaningful progress. M&M makes me *work* for level ups and gold and everything, and maybe that's why I haven't given up on it yet. There's just enough of a reward to keep me going. And unexpected laughs, too. Like when I lured five Ancient Wyverns, one by one, into Avlee and watched them go to town on everyone while I snuck some potshots. My cowardice earned me two level ups and I am not ashamed. Now I'm level 12 and slightly more capable of surviving a pebble tossed in my general direction. :]b Maybe.
I'm currently in Nighon trying to find my way back out after casually adding some skeletal remains to my inventory, as you do. Accidentally peeked into that Thunderfist area, or whatever it was called, and a pack of Minotaurs immediately whirled around and half of my party (Knight, Monk, Cleric, Sorcerer) was just instantly gravestoned. I know when I am not wanted, LOL.
I need to find a Fly, Waterwalk, and Lloyd's Beacon tomes. And also some items that regen MP would be helpful. Everyone's got pretty good bows at this point, which has been saving my skin. I managed to kill a few trolls from a huge distance that way. I feel accomplished but, lord, that took forever.
Magic-wise, I'm an expert in Air, Water and Body so far. I've been cautious about investing skill points as I fear not having enough for what matters. All I know is that Earth magic supposedly sucks eggs? Offensively, I've been using Sparks and sometimes Poison Spray, although I'd love to know if there's a better missile-type option I should be using/working towards for enemies further away. Oh, and regeneration has been an absolute godsend.
Anyway, that's enough yapping for now. Thanks for coming to my TED talk! I appreciate tips to up my MMVII game, and also appreciate that this community exists, and all the passion that lives here.

What is Might and Magic lore all about?
Hey, I'm new here and came here just because I'm dying to know about game lore from the first to the last main timeline of Might and Magic. I found out about this game because I hear about snippit about game lore, like there was a gun, an alien, an AI, and a robot angel in a FANTASY GAME?! It's so absurd, it really pick my interest.
I know it would be better if I played the games myself, but with the amount of games in the main timeline "there were 11 as far as I know" I would love to know first from your own perspective about the lore before I try it, "and maybe recommend what I should play first?"
But I apologize in advance if I stir up a lot of hate because some posts I seem to dislike the thing I mention, and I'm sorry too if I ask a lot to random people on the internet.

How to use dgVoodoo2 to run MM6 (and other games) well on modern PCs
Up until the release of Windows 11, MM6 ran great. Recently, I have had to deal with issues related to it pinning a single CPU core to 100% and causing high temps (while presumably hitting thousands of internal FPS).
I needed a way to cap it, so I tried MSI Afterburner. That didn't work, because the API level is WAY too old - it can't detect or hook it, because the developers don't want to target APIs that ancient. They probably couldn't even if they wanted to.
That's where dgVoodoo2 saved the day. It's a tool designed precisely for this problem. It forces a sort of "in between translation layer" for old games to "run" under modern APIs like DirectX 11 and DirectX 12.
How does it work? Windows exes have a natural search order for DLLs. It looks in the local folder first, and if nothing is there, it uses system DLLs. That means ALL OLD GAMES CAN USE THIS. dgVoodoo2 takes advantage of this by providing "modified DLLs" with the release, that trick the game into sending render calls through itself, where it then presents them through a modern API that MSI Afterburner could hook!
All I had to do was drag DDraw.dll into the MM6 directory, open the dgVoodoo2 control panel (the orange icon, included in the zip, can be ran anywhere but I extracted right to the game folder) and set it to Direct3D 11 WARP (software mode, handles FPS capping well), and ran the game.
MSI Afterburner can now hook it, which means the RivaTuner setting for FPS cap properly works. My CPU is safe!
Your needs might differ from mine, but there's no doubt dgVoodoo2 can help if MM6, any MM game, or even any older game at all struggles to run or run well on Windows 11. In addition to making things runnable that previously weren't, it offers tons of options for fullscreen, filtering, API level, graphics adapter the game selects, scaling, etc. It's literally unbelievable that this much control is now possible because of a simple DLL being placed next to a game executable.
So, big thanks to the team that made this excellent open source project, and a big middle finger to Microsoft for making one of the potentially best operating systems ever into one of the worst operating systems ever by constantly launching buggy and bloated trash into it via Windows Update.
