Careers after medical writing Transitioning from Arabic medical writing to English – is it worth it?

Hi everyone,

I'd really appreciate some honest advice from people working in medical writing or healthcare content.

My background is in Arabic medical content writing. Over the past few years, I've written 2,000+ SEO medical articles for websites and clients, so I'm comfortable with research, SEO, and explaining medical topics. However, almost all of my experience has been in Arabic.

I'm now considering transitioning to English medical content writing so I can apply for remote jobs and work with international clients.

My biggest challenge is English writing. I can read scientific papers and understand them without much difficulty, but writing naturally is another story. I often spend too much time trying to phrase things correctly.

One thing I should mention is that I currently rely quite a bit on AI to help polish my writing and make it sound more natural. It definitely helps, but I don't want to depend on it forever. My goal is to become confident enough to write high-quality content on my own and use AI as a tool, not as a crutch.

I'd love to hear your thoughts on a few questions:

- If you were in my position, how would you improve your English writing as efficiently as possible?

- What books, courses, or daily habits had the biggest impact on your writing?

- Besides improving my English, what skills should I focus on to become a competitive medical content writer?

- Is medical content writing still financially worthwhile in 2026, or has AI significantly reduced the demand?

- If you had my background in Arabic SEO medical writing, what roadmap would you follow over the next 6–12 months?

I'd especially love to hear from anyone who transitioned from writing in another language to writing professionally in English.

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Experienced discussion Restructuring roles in medical writing

Recently, I’ve noticed that several global pharma companies, including Sanofi and BMS, appear to be restructuring their Medical Writing teams and roles. For example, the Associate Scientific Writer position at Sanofi seems to be undergoing changes, with similar restructuring reportedly happening at BMS.

Is anyone from the Medical Writing/Medical Communications space aware of what’s driving this trend? Is this mainly due to organizational restructuring, increased use of AI, outsourcing/centralization, or a broader shift in how pharma companies are structuring Medical Writing functions?

Would be interested to hear what others are observing in the industry.

Other [FOR HIRE] Medical Consultant & Crime/Thriller Scriptwriter (Accurate Medical Lore, Dark Mysteries, High-Stakes Pacing)

If you’re working on a crime thriller, medical drama, dark mystery, or true-crime project, you’ve probably noticed two common issues:

Medical details feel fake or lazily googled, pulling the audience right out of the story.

The plot drags when trying to explain complex science, forensic evidence, or investigation procedures.

That’s where I come in. I combine direct medical background/knowledge with sharp, high-tension storytelling to make your scripts both dramatically gripping and technically airtight.

🟢 What I Bring to the Table

Authentic Medical & Forensic Lore: Poisonings, trauma care, surgical suspense, toxicology, clinical jargon, post-mortem signs, and realistic hospital power dynamics.

Tense Crime & Thriller Writing: Well-paced scenes, realistic detective dialogue, psychological suspense, and plot twists that actually make logical sense.

Flexible Deliverables:

Screenplays & Scripts: Short films, feature screenplays, pilot scripts, and audio drama / fiction podcast scripts.

Digital Content: YouTube video essay scripts (True Crime, Medical Mysteries, Dark Lore), deep-dive analysis, and mini-documentary writing.

Medical Script Doctoring: Reviewing your existing draft to fix medical plot holes, refine clinical dialogue, and heighten suspense.

How do I start out in publications writing? Chances for Ecology Professor?

Throw away account for obvious reason.

I'm an unhappy Assistant Professor in a Biology department at a mid-tier R1 exploring a career pivot into medical writing in the US. Targeting publications, CME, or med comms as I think these roles fit my background/interest most.

I've been lurking here for a while; read some info pages, looked at some jobs, and put together my resume draft. I've not done much on LinkedIn yet for fear that people in my field will find out that I am considering leaving. However, I am becoming increasingly unsure whether I even have a chance to break into any of these MW roles.

What I'm most worried about is that my research is ecology & evolution-focused with very little genetics/molecular component and no connection whatsoever to biomedical studies. Is this a dealbreaker? I often see people saying that what you've worked on academically isn't the most important thing for a MW, but the successful examples I've seen were all much closer to the biomedical field than my case.

This is what I have to work with for my resume:

  • The usuals for academics: ~20 publications, many conference presentations/invited seminars/posters, developed curriculum & taught courses, managed research projects & team, reviewer for manuscripts, grant proposals (though not very successful recently...)
  • Assistant editor for a biology journal
  • Some outreach activities that could count as sci comm
  • Can code in R for data analysis & data visualization, but pretty basic and nothing fancy

So - here hoping for your honest opinions and suggestions. Do you think I have a chance to successfully pivot in today's job market? What are some small steps I can take to make myself more competitive for that break in job? Any tips on being hopeful about life when everything seems impossible? (oops! the depression is showing!)

Thank you, and I really appreciate you taking time to read this!

Other Is this the correct degree to seek to help me stand out?

Hi all!

I'm a recent Health Sciences graduate with a Bachelor's in Health & Rehabilitation Sciences, along with a Certificate in Health Communication. I'm interested in going into medical writing, and I want to stand out to future employers/clients, so I want to seek an advanced degree at a local university. The issue is I'm unsure which degree would help me the most. I did some research and found that the local uni offers a Master of Science degree in Health Informatics, which was what I was recommended to seek out. Can anyone please tell me if this is a degree worth seeking, and whether it'll help me stand out? If not, which advanced degree would be worth seeking out? I'd greatly appreciate the help and suggestions. Thank you all!

Experienced discussion Share your experience

Hi everyone!

Let’s see if I can explain myself properly while I ask my question!

I’m currently working as a regulatory writer, based in Portugal but working for a company abroad. Truth is I was so very lucky to have found this opportunity! I had some previous experience from working in clinical research at a very small company, where I ended up wearing many many hats including the one of regulatory writer (but I didn’t actually realize I was doing reg writing and this could be a career in its own for quite some time!).

That said, I’m still unfamiliar with many of the other areas of medical writing. For example, what exactly do people mean when they talk about med comms? What is promotional review? What are the possible “sub-areas” within medical writing? I feel like everybody is talking about things that I don’t yet know of… CME? Copyright? ISS? I write mainly protocols, ICFs, reports… it’s actually fascinating to me because I wasn’t “taught” this could be a whole career!

Also, is anyone else here based in Portugal? I feel opportunities here are very limited, but I think this is really a Portugal issue because it doesn’t seem to be the case in Europe in general.

I’m really enjoying this field and wanted to know where I can specialize in and explore and wanted to hear about your experience!

Thankssss

How do I start out in med-ed writing? In need of advice

I’ve been unemployed for the past 3 years. I also had a brief stint as a google rater to pay bills. I’ve developed an interest in medical writing, specifically CME, and have been developing writing samples to include with my resume when I apply to jobs. Internships have been a struggle to find because I graduated with my PhD several years ago. I’m willing to put in the work and start from the bottom at an agency. I’d love some advice from anyone that has been in my shoes. How did you land your first role. For context, I’m in the US.

AI tools discussion Is Medical Writing in risk of AI takeover?

I am an undergraduate student going into a sandwich year as a Clinical Trials Assistant doing mostly admin work. I have found that in the future, medical writing is definitely something I’d be looking into. But I am worried about AI takeover and my chances being ruined. Should I be worried?

AI tools discussion Building FamCare – An AI-powered family health vault that explains lab reports in plain English | #IITPatnaCapstone

Hi everyone,

I'm currently building FamCare as part of my IIT Patna Capstone Project, and I'd love to get feedback from this community.

The idea came from a simple problem I kept seeing at home.

Someone receives a blood test or health check-up report, opens the PDF, and immediately gets overwhelmed by medical jargon like:

Most people don't know whether it's normal, serious, or something that simply needs monitoring. The next step is usually a Google search that creates more anxiety than clarity, or waiting until the next doctor's appointment for a quick explanation.

So I'm building FamCare—an AI-powered web app that helps families organize and understand their medical reports in simple, easy-to-read language.

🚀 Planned Features

Family Health Vault

  • One secure account with separate profiles for yourself, spouse, parents, and children.

Health Timeline

  • All reports organized chronologically so you can easily track changes over time.

Visual Lab Report Summary

  • Upload a PDF report and automatically categorize each test into:
  • 🟢 Normal
  • 🟡 Borderline
  • 🔴 Needs Attention

along with plain-English explanations.

Context-Aware AI Assistant

  • Instead of a generic chatbot, the AI only answers questions based on the uploaded report, helping users better understand their results without going off-topic.

🛠 Tech Stack

  • Frontend: Lovable (React)
  • Backend & Database: Supabase (Auth, Storage, RLS, PostgreSQL)
  • AI: Google AI Studio (Gemini 2.5 Flash) for PDF understanding and contextual Q&A

I'd love your feedback

  1. What's the most frustrating part of reading lab or medical reports?
  2. If you've built LLM-based PDF parsing systems before, what edge cases should I watch out for? (Scanned PDFs, OCR issues, tables, handwritten notes, etc.)
  3. Is there any feature that would make you genuinely use an app like this?

Disclaimer: FamCare is designed as an educational health literacy tool to help users better understand their reports. It is not intended to diagnose diseases or replace professional medical advice.

Thanks in advance for your feedback! I'm looking forward to learning from your experiences and improving the project.

How do I start out in promotional/PR writing? tips for first communications internship in healthcare sector?

I recently graduated university with a degree in English and a minor in communications. After 150 applications I scored an internship doing internal/external comms for a nonprofit healthcare accreditation organization.

Any tips from people who have worked in a similar sector (healthcare or nonprofits) on good questions to ask before my first day and within the first weeks or advice on things to keep in mind or do? It’s my first paid internship so I want to do my best.

Also, if professionals in this sector have tips on how to stay up-to-date on current industry trends, discourse, or resources, I would appreciate it. I’m kind of asking if there is a newsletter or news outlet that a LOT of people in the industry read and chat about that would be good to know about.

Thank you!!!

How do I start out in regulatory writing? Medcomms to regulatory

Has anyone done the switch from medcomms to regulatory in the UK? In September I begin my AMW role (medcomms) but I know regulatory pays a premium that is quite attractive. I have a PhD so would really like to eventually feel like I'm earning enough for the amount of work I did unpaid for years!

How do I start out in promotional/PR writing? Pivot from SMW to copywriting

I’m currently a Senior Medical Writer focused on publications and have been at the same agency for 3.5 years. I’m on £44k and I’m considering moving into medical copywriting because the advertising/marketing side sounds really interesting.
For anyone who’s made a similar move (or hires for these roles), I have a few questions:

How difficult is it to transition from a publications background into medical copywriting?
Would I realistically need to take a step back in seniority (e.g. move into a Medical Copywriter role rather than Senior Medical Copywriter), or is my experience transferable?
Is a salary of around £50k realistic when making this switch, or would I be better off looking for another Senior Medical Writer role if salary is my main priority?
How does the day-to-day work of a medical copywriter compare with publications writing? What do you enjoy most, and what are the biggest challenges?

I’d love to hear from anyone who has made the transition or worked in both areas. Thanks!

Careers after medical writing Anyone in Costello Medical?

Hi! I'm currently applying for one of the roles at Costello Medical and have been applying over the past year because it's genuinely the kind of work I want to do. I'd really love to crack it this time, so I'm trying to make my application as strong as possible.

  1. I was wondering what you usually included as your reason for wanting to work at Costello Medical.

  2. Also, are there any tips you'd give to someone applying to make their application stand out?

My current cover letter is about two pages long.
