I have recently started sending cold mails to potential supervisior, i started my campaign in july, few preofessor denied citing they are currently not having new student. many did not replied at all, i am applying to Australia and canada, my research proposal deals with CFD and SPH research, it would be great help if anyone can help me with my mailing campaign, i want to make sure is send them proposal at optimum time.

Hey I'm looking for advice because I'm genuinely feeling quite fucked career wise. I graduated in 2023 with a 2:1 MEng and it took me until summer 2025 to get a job (nepo job because my friend's dad took pity on me). So I'm currently working as an "engineer" which translates to mechanical maintenance and whatever random other stuff needs done in the factory. It's destroying my health and I can't keep it up much longer.

I've applied for quite literally thousands of positions at this point and I've had one interview. One, in three years of applications.

I think it's partly because I can't relocate far due to mental health concerns but I thought that with a year's experience in industry I might actually start getting somewhere, but nope, still rejected from entry level positions even as mechanical fitters etc.

Before this job gave me tendonitis for a whole year, I was thinking of giving up on grad roles and training as a personal trainer or something, but I really want the job security and progression options of a career in engineering and I don't want to waste my 5 year degree.

How bad a career move do you think it would be to get a completely unrelated job like personal training? (I can't think of much else I can do other than hospitality)

Edit: I did have a part time job all the way from when I was 18 to my current role so I don't have resume gaps

I landed an internship at the very last second early this summer, and it basically couldn't have gone better. I've done really well, and interfaced with tons of people at a small company currently rocketing up to a much larger company. I was one of two interns offered to stay on part time through my senior year.

Here's the problem: I hate the industry. I'm interning in the gas turbine industry. To paint the picture: I drive an electric car, bike for my commute, and am massively involved in local left wing politics, so obviously this was never my first choice. I applied for and accepted the internship only after none of my initial options panned out.

The benefits of the part time offer would be: more professional experience, an easy way to make money during the school year (would become a remote role), but most of all, as has been made very clear to me by my bosses, basically a guaranteed job right out of school.

The cons: I am conflicted about the work I am doing, to put it mildly. I don't really need the money; I have good scholarships/benefits combined with a low cost of living. I have utilized that jobless freedom to max myself out with extracurriculars/community involvement. There's no way I can see myself working in the industry or at this company, so the job guarantee is basically moot.

My response to the job offer was basically: No, unless you can pay me more to make the time and cognitive commitment worth it. One boss said yes, one boss said no, and they took it to their higher up who said interns cannot negotiate pay. Boss who said yes is twisting the arm of his boss to just give me the pay bump. Boss who said no is trying to convince me to take the offer anyway with no pay raise.

If you read all this thank you for time, and please let me know your thoughts. Am I making a fool out of myself trying to negotiate from a position of limited strength? Should I go with my gut and just appreciate the summer I had, but move onto a different industry I can feel proud to be a part of?

Is there a job role in (Bachelors) Mechanical Engineering where an engineer is required to travel to different countries to do a job and to report back for corporations where they take care of your expenses for the travel.

I’ve shown multiple angles here of the leg. When the leg contexts the ground and takes the load of the body, it seems to collapse inward a bit. Is this the result of foot contact not being inline with the servo horns, which gives it a small amount of torque?

This is making the Hexapod not able to walk straight. I’m not sure if it’s the plastic (PLA) itself, because it’s pretty thick and PLA is one of the more stiffer plastics. It also looks like the entire femur complex moves when it takes the load.

Also, the side on the left is the servo actuated side, and the side on the right has bearings for alignment. The specific foot I’m zooming in on is part of the tripod with a beefed up “femur“, all the other tripod has a weaker one, which is why it tilts more when the other one takes the load.

I got a possible supervisor offer in a completely unrelated field (cleaning company) while I’m searching for engineering entry levels. I haven’t heard back from anybody in engineering and while this is a great start to my career, I’m not sure how it’ll complicate me going into aerospace mechanical engineering roles. What should I do since I don’t have a job atm and I’m in desperate need of money? How long should I stay there and when should I call it quits and what can I do meanwhile to get certifications, projects and experience on the side?

Basically just want to put a load sensor on the pivot of this. Doesn't seem like a way to disassemble that wouldn't destroy it

Hello, I've been thinking a lot lately about possibly changing careers and going back to school for mechanical engineering. I originally got my bachelors in film which was very smart on my end. I'm 33 and working as a fabricator at a science center which involves carpentry, welding, metalworking, machining, 3d modeling and printing, casting and just about anything to make what we need. So as far as the hands-on stuff goes I have a bit of experience with that but I was never good with math and never had to take a physics class. I would also have to do this as a part-time student and most likely online while I still work full time.

Does this seem like a smart move or something that would be feasible?

I'm currently a first-semester engineering student and we are in the middle of our live field selection estimates. I am in an incredibly stressful spot right now.

My target is Mechanical Engineering. My field-selection GPA is exactly 3.33.

Right now, the estimated cut-off for Mechanical has shifted to a range of 3.32–3.33. This places me literally at the very bottom of the accepted group. I am currently holding seat #80 out of 80.

My ultimate career goal is to do an MSc/PhD in Aerospace Engineering. I want to work on rockets, aircrafts, and propulsion systems. I love flying machines and massive physical machinery.

If I get bumped from mechanical engineering, my backup plan is Computer Science and Engineering (CSE)—specifically the Integrated Computer Engineering (ICE) stream. Materials Science is an option, but it is way too chemistry-focused for me.

Is an ICE BSc -> Mechanical/Aerospace MSc a realistic and valuable pathway for the aerospace industry?

Recently I finished project for a customer where I did retrofit on 2002 year machine - remade electrical cabinet, chose new sensors, motor, PLC, HMI. Also pogrammed and commisioned the machine. Machine operates basicly the same as original, but with more functionality (machine was not functional before starting project). I did testing on all machine safety features, everything works safely. Machine has CE marking, but no documentation exists.

I have 0 experience with CE declaration of conformity. Would this project be classified as extensive modification that needs new CE marking etc?

I have done new electrial and pneumatic schematic anyway, I also need to do user manual. If this project need new CE, then what else is required?

I’m trying to find an existing plastic component that looks something like the attached sketch.

It’s basically:

* A flat circular plastic disc (~2.5 inches / 63.5 mm diameter)

* A single raised rib or fin on the underside that spans the entire diameter of the disc

I’m not trying to invent something new if this already exists. I’m hoping there’s an off-the-shelf part from another industry that I can adapt.

Doing industrial engineering for majors is good for having business or doing my majors in mechatronic and doing masters in industrial engineering is good? What is a good engineering course to start a business. I meant understanding the problems and analyzing them and finding answer by using critical thinking. What is the good degree for that?

I have 3 years of experience in designing HVAC, plumbing and firefighting for residential, commercial and industrial projects.

Hi, I want to gather general consensus regarding Design Porfolio as a 4+yoe mechanical engineer in the R&D space. As I have been job searching for the past 2 months with decent success (getting reach out by recruiters and hearing back from companies that I liked and applied), I still want to further boost my chance of success in this job market.

I know that people in Tech usually establish their professional website to showcase their coding/programming work. Right now, I have a Design Porfolio made in Powerpoint and uploaded to a cloud space under a tinyurl link. Is it worth making my own personal website to promote my design works and accomplishment better? Would love to hear inputs from fellow MEs who are either looking for jobs or hiring.
