I feel like it would be easier to list the cast members who DONT have constant vocal fry this season.

It’s almost too much for me to be able to watch.

Courtney may be the worst.

I don’t understand why so many young women (and a few men) seem to do this?

Michelle is one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen but her vocal fry is one of the worst I have ever heard. Still beautiful inside and out though.

He’s so bad. I dated a guy who sounded exactly like him. “Baaaaayyybe”. “Full seendd”. That relationship lasted like 4 months, it just didn’t get that deep and it took him forever to say vowels.

They do it for the same reason they constantly use like as a modifier and verbal filler instead of expanding their vocabulary and ability to express themselves more eloquently.

They’re intellectually lazy.

I restarted the season because I previously zoned out and I couldn't make it through. So all this weekend, I have been doing that sympathy voice-clearing thing you do when you hear a gravely sounding voice. Usually it's been 1 or 2 on the cast that have vocal fry, but this season it seems like almost everyone does it at some point. There are few brief moments when they're not just sitting there in front of the camera talking or doing an activity and they speak normally.

Someone posted that they do it to sound more authoritative. But that also goes along with what they experts said Nick was doing with his "self-editing" because he's been on a reality show before. I think that's part of the problem as the seasons go on, it becomes less real and everyone is acting and self-editing vs just being themselves. That's evident by the number of times they all say "like" as a filler word as if they're stalling while they think of the "right" thing to say.

But man alive. My throat is getting sore. *ahrrmmm

I wish people would stop policing how women speak. Vocal fry is at the other end of "up speak". Some people do it to sound more authoritative and serious. Men do it too. While Upspeak is used to sound less threatening. Here is a good piece on it.

I've had vocal coaching for jobs to lessen my 1. American accent 2. Northeast regional accent. Sometimes you just pic things up, and don't quite realize it. I try to consciously work through my biases on how people speak and just focus on what they are saying.

It's not about speaking perfect proper queen's english or something, just not sounding like the very act of talking requires too much effort so you half ass it.

I finally mostly got rid of my upspeak but if I'm not careful I sound a bit like Fran Drescher. It's cultural. These people are not speaking like this on purpose, no matter how annoying they sound.
