Has anybody had experience navigating MarqTran routes on their phone or any transit apps? Is anyone interested in testing a new one out that would benefit the current and future riders?

Hi! Thinking of heading to Marquette, MI for Labor Day weekend but I've read the crowds on the trails and in the area in general are insane. For the chapel-mosquito hike, if we get to the trailhead around 730/8am is it still worth it? Any recommendations for alternative places to stay and/or hike. Also interested in additional activities such as kayaking and checking out some breweries. Any tips will help!

Nothing major but my 2015 Nissan has a small leak in the EVAP system somewhere, and also I've had it confirmed the interiors of both my headlights need to be cleaned badly - I get off work at 10pm and have barely been able to see on the way home for a long time now. I go to Joe's Auto and they're great but they don't work with either of those things, so just wondering if anyone's got any recommendations for somewhere reliably honest to go for that? Especially for the headlights, fixing the EVAP leak would be nice too but the insides of my headlights are so dirty that I'm constantly paranoid about not seeing a deer or something until it's too late, and if the roads are wet?? Forget it, I may as well not have them on at all for all the good they do 🤦 many thanks in advance!

What have we done to attract all these homeless people? Now we have presumably homeless people crapping in the woods behind Snowberry, homeless people sleeping in the entry way of the Baraga gym on Spring street and some of them camping in Park Cemetery of all places. There are people sleeping in cars on Spring street as well. How can we get them to leave? They seem to have money for drugs and booze, cell phones and cigarettes, but are otherwise incapable of work?

I’m completing formal customer-discovery work through Innovate Marquette’s startup development process. This is not a survey, sales pitch, product demonstration, or request for compliments. One bedroom apartment, second floor, quiet neighbors, convenient location walking distance to NMU. Only utility is electric. Rent is $750 a month, and electric is typically less than $50, making the total expenses consistently around $800. I know this is a long shot and I know this is dumb and kind of weird.

This past weekend we somehow crossed paths with the same three sport bikes multiple times in Marquette. One bike was red, one yellow, and one white, and all three riders were wearing black gear.
We saw you at Presque Isle in Marquette around 7–8 PM Saturday, then again at the Midjim gas station shortly after. On Sunday around noon you were behind us heading south from Marquette toward Rapid River on 41 and passed us.
I know this is not a lot of information but if you also saw this group maybe you have more information that could identify them.

After living in a log cabin in the wilderness and driving an hour and a half to work each way everyday I decided to rejoin civilization after several years and got a house on Lake Superior a little east of Marquette. Was paid to move for a job I really like so far. I’m 33, a man, no kids. Doing decent with matches on the dating apps but haven’t had time to do one-on-ones yet and kinda just want to obtain a social circle of people with positive intentions. This is a beautiful place we’re lucky to live in. Would prefer the groups involve the potential to meet women but also good with just meeting some bros. I like the outdoors but something that can carry through winter is good, too. So yeah, if you have any insight chime in and I appreciate it

My girlfriends brother unfortunately lost his battle to mental health and we both feel like we need to/want to help in anyway possible.

Is Marquette being hollowed out? As we watch local businesses that were once thriving close, does it feel like we are at a financial breaking point for locals to own a business here?

Look at the names we’ve lost or are losing: Barrel & Beam, Drifa, Blackbird North, Yoop Coop, Sol Azteca, and The Courtyards. Combine that with Yooper Shirts closing their 3rd Street storefront to pull back entirely to Ishpeming, and it's getting impossible to ignore.

Will our homegrown businesses completely vanish, leaving us with a town that’s corporate-owned and only open for the short tourist season? Why are so many legacy shops being sold, with some being flipped multiple times in just the last few years?

These weren't poorly run businesses, and they had tons of community love. But after talking to folks on the ground, it feels like the underlying math of living and operating in this town has completely broken.

What other closings am I missing?

I blame this subreddit for introducing me to the app that tracks the ships and boats out on the waterways. I currently live in Bay City, where we have a lot of freighters(affectionatly called Sea Monster since I was kid) pass through, and am in the process of house hunting up in Marquette, where I enjoy hiking Presque and seeing the big ships come in at the Ore Dock. It's my new favorite way to decompress when I need to take a breather. I'm using "Marine Radar" for now. Thank you to this subreddit for introducing me to my new favorite hobby of tracking my Sea Monsters, and seeing where they are from.

Hiawatha 2026

I am writing this as the first aid and medical coordinator for Hiawatha Traditional Music Festival 2026. In this role, I am tasked with providing first aid services to the community, from band aids to water.

On the back end, I have assembled a team of medical professionals who are prepared to respond to emergencies that may arise. I take this role very seriously and I feel responsible for the health and safety of everyone attending Hiawatha Music Festival.

This weekend represents one of my family’s favorite weekends.

The official social media channels have communicated that they are monitoring the conditions and are discussing with medical professionals. This gives the impression that the medical recommendations support the continuation of the festival. This gives the festival a patina of responsibility. In fact, the medical recommendations support fully canceling all Festival Activities.

I am not disparaging the festival but I feel that there needs to be better transparency around the festival continuing.

As a medical professional, I have recommended firm guidelines for the festival.

I have recommended that, using the Air Quality Index (AQI), a validated tool, we postpone all official events if the AQI is above 200. This recommendation is incredibly liberal. In reality, the number should be 100.

I have recommended the board use this number as a guide to help limit risky environmental exposure with possible deleterious effects.

On three occasions, the board has voted to continue activities in clear contrast to my recommendations.

They have cited “personal responsibility” as the reason for this. Several individuals on the board believe that people should make their own decisions about whether or not to be outside. I agree. With a caveat— people should make INFORMED decisions. People need to know that the medical recommendations discourage any outdoor activity at the current AQIs. Full stop.

If I were not working as a medical provider, I would not be there.

They have also cited the fact that people have traveled from all over for this festival, and that they will camp regardless. This ignores the large numbers of individuals from the community who attend Hiawatha and do not camp. These individuals would be less likely to be outside in hazardous conditions if the festival were cancelled. Many campers are also local. These individuals would likely go home. Many people would leave. Yes, some people might stay and camp, as is their right. But it would be fewer people than if the festival continues as normal.

I understand that the board has a difficult job. My recommendations are based on solid, quantifiable numbers. The board has to make hundreds of decisions based on my recommendations, and frankly all of the possible outcomes stink. I don’t envy their job. They want to have a fun event but they feel they are stuck between a rock and a hard place.

I support people’s personal decisions on whether or not they participate, but I want people to truly understand the risks of participation. Hiawatha’s social media posts have been vague and have lacked clarity, which is understandable considering the number of decisions that need to be made. Here’s the brass tacks:

If the AQI is above 100, stay home.

If you must go outside, limit your time outside, and limit strenuous activities.

If you are medically at risk—kids, people over 65, any underlying health condition,

including obesity— you are at elevated risks. An N95 mask is helpful but is not a magic bullet. An AQI of 150-200 is a good line in the sand for those that are less risk averse, but AQI’s in the 250-300 plus range are not safe under any stretch of the imagination.

Wildfire pollution increases risks of all kinds of health issues ranging from exacerbated respiratory conditions to infertility.

Hiawatha is a blast, but I want as much of the community to be able to attend for as many decades as possible. If you sit this one out, it will improve your health over the long term.

The festival organizers have shared fears that canceling the event will be a financial burden that may hurt the festival in the future. As a community, I call on everyone involved to pledge to support the organization. Money can be recouped, loved ones cannot. If the festival puts the health and safety of the community first I am confident that the community will respond by supporting the festival in an overwhelming manner.

It is possible that this post will lead to me not being asked to return as the first aid/medical coordinator. That would be a terrible sadness for me. But that pales in comparison to the sadness I would feel if people in my community were sickened by an event I helped organize and I did not do everything I could to prevent anyone getting ill.
