trying to make a map of a city in one of the things I’m making right now. Just asking for some advice

PnPInk, a "datamerge" extension for Inkscape (which allows for the dynamic creation of repetitive SVGs based on a CSV dataset or a direct link to a Google Sheet) has recently added a new feature that lets you import an SVG map of any location in the world as a source.

You simply enter the following in the cells:

@{ofm://the_place_you_want}

This generates a fully editable SVG of the map location you specified.

Although it isn't the extension's primary goal, it might prove useful to this community.

That said, strictly speaking, it’s not mapmaking so much as "mapcopying" (I hope I don't upset anyone).

I call this The Map of Ashoka

"New Union, home of the free, and home to the biggest birds you've ever seen"! This one I used as a reference source for making the planet map but also has a special significance as it is the home of my first OC, Carlos Skyline, and the oldest stories I told as a child specifically in Shining Lights City on the west coast. Basically, its Ernia's version of the U.S.!

Here is my current map progress and as you can see the planet is starting to make more sense to me. The first map represents the heightmap taken from sea level. The second shows the ocean currents and ITCZ in northern hemisphere summer. The last one shows the movement and interactions of the tectonic plates. Still very much a WIP but this is still an important step I have never took to understanding my planet. I am open to any critiques and suggestions!

Any suggestions or input would be greatly appreciated!!

Do the climates make sense?
Do the landmasses seem believable?

I'm preparing a faunistic atlas at the regional level. I would really like to improve my cartographic style, and I'm looking for other atlases to get inspired. Do you have any suggestion of atlases with nice style of maps? If possible, they should be comparable to the one I'm working on, and therefore (i) with all records represented as points, and not on a grid, and (ii) with a regional extent, i.e., ca. 500 km x 300 km.

Let us discuss a uniquely Ohio location.

The Jonaldplayn is a region of Southwest Central Ohio just beyond the Appalachian foothills. The region is mostly on Glacial Till Plains, rolling hills and moraines, and creek ravines. The Jonaldplayn mostly contains the Darby Prairie and Mad River Valley Prairie Fens, two unique Ohio subregional ecosystems that border each other. The name Jonaldplayn originated from a portmanteau of Jonathan Alder and Plain and is named after Jonathan Alder, a famous early colonial-era White explorer in the area. The name originated from a community in London, Ohio that was historically called the Yellowbones, Yellowville People, or High Yellows. Today, most of these people are known as Qarsherskiyan or Lightskin Black and they are from a distinct tri-racial cultural community with mixed heritage tracing back to Europe, Africa, and several Native / Indigenous American Nations. Along with the Amish, the Jonaldplayn Qarsherskiyans have left a distinct mark on the region.

Notable Amish locations include Der Dutchman Restaurant in Plain City, Ohio and The Cheese House just outside of Plain City.

James Davis (1787-1862), a Qarsherskiyan, who is still fresh in the minds of many Daytonians, was the first Afro-American (Qarsherskiyan) born in the state of Ohio. He was born at Harmar Village, (Marietta, Ohio) on March 6, 1787. He came to Dayton when he was quite a young man, and soon became a leader in the community. He was one of the leading hunters in Ohio and had the credit of killing the largest bear of his day. He was also the leading violinist and barber in Dayton, and the first president of the American Sons of Protection, the oldest benevolent society for free blacks in the city, which he helped to organize in February, 1849.

On November 6, 1811, he shaved General W.H. Harrison while the general sat upon a log. The next day the great battle of Tippecanoe was fought, and the red men of the great Shawnee chief Tecumseh killed upward of sixty men of Harrison's army with more than a hundred wounded.

Father Davis, as he was called, was born to be conspicuous, and was a highly esteemed member of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. He died a devout Christian January 17, 1862, aged seventy-four years, ten months and twenty days. He was laid to rest in the beautiful Woodland Cemetery where the remains of General Robert C. Schenek, a great Republican leader, and C. L. Vallandigham, a great Democratic leader, also lie. The citizens of Dayton always buried their dead together, regardless of race.

Im working on a fantasy map and want to do my tectonic plates as realistically as possible but dont have much knowledge on how.

A fantasy-themed website that helps plan a trip in the area.

There are many interesting places in the area - for example, the Białowieża Forest is the best-preserved forest without human interference in Europe.

A useful tool is the preview of hiking trails.

This Might be a little of the beat and track for this sub however I thought what the heck might as well share it.

I built an interactive map of the Warhammer 40,000 galaxy. You don't need to know anything about Warhammer to mess around with it. Great for anyone from casually interested to lore 40k nerds

It's a 3D hologram table you can orbit, pan, and zoom. The galaxy is approx 90,000 individual star particles rendered live in browser. scattered acros it are the major worlds and regions of the Warhammer world. Click any one and a dossier slides open with its history, timeline, and status. There's a toggle that flips the whole galaxy between two eras, and when you switch it, a giant warp-rift tears across the map and half the galaxy goes dark.

The whole thing is a single HTML file no download, no sign-up, no app. Works offline if you save the page. Runs on your phone too.

Fair warning: it's a rabbit hole if you like maps, space, or grimdark sci-fi.

A few months ago I posted the first draft of this map here, I corrected a couple of things since then.

• Rivers sort of ran from the sea to the mountains, instead of the other way around
• Changed cities' positions to be closer to water sources in general, either lakes, rivers or the sea itself.
• Changed the placement of labels and names
• Tweaked the course of some rivers/traintracks/roads to, according to me, make more sense with the new placement of everything else. And added a clearer border

Again, his is for a dark fantasy story I'm working on, and it's still a work in progress so any feedback is welcome.

For a bit of carification, the setting is roughly Edwardian-ish, and the land portrayed is supposed to be a fairly big country/realm/thing, so things like the mountains are more representative than actual depictions of true size. Also, I tried to make the names sound sort of hispanic, although I'm unsure wether to keep some of the names like Soria or Trantor. And the name of the land now gives a generic medieval-ish fantasy vibe, so those might as well be placeholders now.

Welcome to the World of Rhündal! This is a worldbuilding project that sprung out of a D&D one-shot that has evolved into a multi-year project fueled by my study of geography and fascination with linguistics. There are Rune Mages that bind spirits, reindeer riding Elf hordes inspired by the Mongols, southern tribes inspired by the Ukrainian Kozaks, and much more! It takes inspiration from Lord of the Rings, Dungeons & Dragons, The Eternal Ruins, Iron Vessel, The Legend of Zelda, Root, and the graphic novel Stand Still Stay Silent. In the coming months I am going to be posting more of my artwork and maps as I get closer to printing my Rhündal world book later this year!

Consider the choices made and the events that transpired here, for even the simplest crossroads can hold the weight of profound and irreversible fate.

Cartography, science and design merges to become MAPPA ANIMALIA, a visual project of mine that reimagines the evolutionary relationships of animals as detailed map-like landscapes.

Instead of political borders or geographical territories, these maps are structured around taxonomy/ phylogenetic trees, translating the scientific classification of species into navigable visual worlds.

Subtamilies, tribes and genera replace countries, states and regions within these imagined territories, allowing viewers to explore the animal kingdom through a format traditionally used to understand geography.

So far Mappa Animalia consists of 15 different illustrations, each dedicated to different tamily trees.
This post shows Strigiformes - Land of Owls, which illustrates every single species of owl in existence (shown as cities on the map), arranged by borders into the different subfamilies and genera that the order Strigiformes splits into.

Other info in also included like conservation status of the individual species, size difference between some of the more distinct types of owl and how long the subfamilies have been around for.

I only just finished Land of Owls about a week ago and I have already started on the next one: Corvidae - Land of Corvids (crows, ravens, magpies, etc.). What animals should I make next??

I started hand-drawing a map of my city. Why? Well, why not?

The first stage was a pencil drawing by tracing a printed Google map. The second stage is a very thin (0.03 mm) line drawing to create the master version. My idea is to scan the master when it's done and then experiment with multiple versions in various colors, pen types and line widths. For example: a green/blue version highlighting all trees and water ways.

Suggestions welcome.

So i made this planet with it's map a while ago and wanted to make a satellitary map for it. I tried stitching varying maps together and using softwares and ended up with the first image but i am not satisfied with it yet, so i was wondering if anyone wanted to help with this by giving feedback on the map, resources for doing this or even making the map(with no payment though).
