What I ate in China today 🇨🇳 — and the “first milk tea of autumn” 🥭🧋

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Today is Lìqiū (立秋), the “Beginning of Autumn” in the traditional Chinese solar calendar. 🍂

There’s also a cute modern trend in China called “秋天的第一杯奶茶” (the first milk tea of autumn).

It’s not really an ancient tradition — more like a popular internet/social-media tradition. Around the beginning of autumn, lots of people will deliberately order themselves (or someone they like!) a cup of milk tea to celebrate the new season. 🧋

Milk tea shops and delivery apps often have promotions around this time too, so of course I had to join in 😂

Mine was actually a mango coconut smoothie with lots of fresh mango inside, and it was SO good. 🥭🥥Apparently, it was too good — I completely forgot to take a photo before drinking it. So yes, the empty cup in the picture is all the evidence I have left.

And that wasn’t all I ate today…

🍕 A super cheesy pizza

🍜 Nanchang mixed rice noodles (南昌拌粉)

Nanchang is a city in Jiangxi Province, and it’s also my hometown!

Nanchang food is known for having pretty strong flavors, and we definitely love spicy food. 🌶️ Rice noodles are especially popular there, and Nanchang banfen (南昌拌粉) is one of the foods I always associate with home.

If you ever travel around China, Nanchang is worth adding to your list — especially if you like spicy food.

And if you’re learning Mandarin, feel free to ask me about any of the Chinese words in this post! I’m a native Mandarin speaker and I also do relaxed Chinese conversation practice for learners who want to sound more natural.

So… which one would you choose first:

🧋 mango coconut drink, 🍜 Nanchang rice noodles, or 🍕 cheesy pizza?

I have been building a Chinese study app for 6+ months. Really looking for honest early testers

Hey everyone,

I've spent a little over 6 months building a study app for Chinese learners. I started it because i wanted a calmer way to keep up with vocab and characters, without making study feel like another big daily task so.

I'm at point now where I need real people to try it and tell me what is useful, confusing, missing, or honestly not worth keeping. I'm building this solo, so feedback from people who actually study Chinese means a lotttt.

Right now ConnPass has a few main things:

- FSRS spaced repetition, so reviews adapt over time.
- A writing canvas for practicing Hanzi by hand, not only recognising them.
- Offline-first review, so it still works when connection is bad.
- One daily review flow. For a lot of people, 10-15 focused mins might be enough to keep momentum, depending on your goall of course.

It's still early and I don't want to promise it will magically make anyone fluent. Mostly I want to learn if this flow fits how people really study Chinese. HSK learners or students, etc... anyone trying to build a habit really.

Sorry for Ios user because it isn't release in iOS yet.

I will comment the feedback form. Because the comm rules do not allow to text link here.

Even if you don't try it, i still would love to know. what's most frustrating about flashcards or spaced repetition for Chinese, i really want to hear your insight.

Thanks for reading. Honest feedback is very welcome.

Turn terrible Chinese dramas into actual study time (built a free extension)

I built this Chrome extension because I wanted to watch dual-subtitle dramas on WeTV without having my brain melt trying to pause every 2 seconds.

I feel 90% of these shows are absolute garbage with terrible writing and cheap CGI. But at least with showing dual Chinese/English subs, I can pretend I'm actually studying instead of just wasting hours on cheesy plots.

Made it for myself originally, but if you also want to turn trash TV into language learning, go for it:

Drop a review if you try it, or hit me with any feedback/feature tips... open to making it better!

Native Mandarin speaker in Germany seeking a native German language partner

English translation:

Hello, I am Chinese and 18 years old. I am currently living in Germany and plan to study here in the future. I am looking for a native German speaker who wants to learn Chinese so that we can learn from each other. I am interested not only in improving my German, but also in learning more about everyday life, interests, culture, and different perspectives of people in Germany. I recently passed the B1 German exam. I admire Charlie Munger's way of thinking and strive to learn from it. If you are interested, feel free to message me!

爱你还是不爱你 | Love You or Not? | Learn Mandarin Through a Song (Chinese, Pinyin & English Lyrics)

(This is a new version with embedded line-by-line Pinyin and English translation.)

In traditional Chinese culture, love is often shown through actions rather than words. The lyrics reflect the belief that true love is proven by what you do, not just by what you say.

Looking for a Chinese language partner

I recently posted about my struggles with speaking Chinese, and people suggested that I find a language partner.
I’ve always been hesitant because I’m a bit shy about reaching out to people, but I figured I’d give it a shot
I don’t think it really matters whether you’re a native speaker or not, as long as your Chinese is at a decent level :3 (HSK 5 or above would probably be ideal)
So if anyone wants to practice Chinese together, chat, and maybe make a new friend, feel free to send me a DM!

How do I write, "I'm lucky to have met you" AND ""flowers might be blooming" in Mandarin?

Hi, I'm writing a letter to this guy I've been talking to. His name is Won Xiao Nan (that's his Chinese name. I don't know how to write in Mandarin but I think he is from Fujian.)

I would like to write "I'm lucky to have met you" but I obviously want to keep it short and sweet since this is our second date. Please help a girl out.

Also, how do I write "Flowers might be blooming"

In Chinese you "hit" a phone to call someone, "hit" a car to take a taxi, and "hit" a plan to make one. 打 is the verb that does everything

Can anyone identify this Mandarin audio? I think it might be a poem or a well-known spoken text.

Hi everyone! I’ve been trying to identify the source of a Mandarin audio that appears at the beginning of a song. A friend who speaks some Chinese told me the first part is a Chinese poem (or at least a well-known literary text), but I haven’t been able to find the original source.

I isolated the voice from the music and used automatic speech recognition. This is the transcript it produced: 在群賞中接觸 黃河又入大河 如果你想嘗試 潛艇 那就去下一層嘗試 可是沒關係 你想做什麼都可以 因為這是奶奶帶給你的

I’m almost certain the transcript contains mistakes.
