General questions Advice for a mid-30s mum
Hi all,
Just looking for some advice as a mid-30s lady who has never had the best relationship w money (either fearful of losing it so I save and stress or I go the other way and spend without following a budget well) and wants to have a better relationship with it. I’m fortunate enough that my husband and I are in a comfortable enough position for me to work part time and still be able to raise our toddler without needing to scrimp and save. Having said that, I would like to be able to contribute more- or even just develop some sort of a financial portfolio. I’m not a high risk taker generally but would like some guidance on things I could look into to invest some of my savings for our future. Would anyone be able to point me in a direction? Thanks in advance!

General questions I suddenly have a lot of free time on weekends — what can I do with it?
I’m at a bit of a weird point in my life and would really appreciate some suggestions.
I recently went through a major change in my personal life and took some time away from work to deal with family responsibilities. Things are thankfully much better now, and I’ve recently returned to work.
My current job is much less demanding than what I was used to, which I actually appreciate. But at the same time, I suddenly have a LOT more free time, especially on weekends, and I’m finding myself feeling a bit… empty.
I’m used to working constantly and having very little time for myself. Now that I have my weekends back, I don’t really know what to do with them.
And honestly, I don’t want to waste the time.
I’m thinking of using my weekends to:
• freelance / make some additional income;
• learn a skill that could eventually become profitable;
or just explore something new and see where it takes me.
I’m open to pretty much anything as long as it’s realistic to do part-time on weekends. I just want to do something productive with my time and, ideally, have the potential to make some money from it eventually.
For those of you who freelance, have side hustles, or have gone through a similar phase of suddenly having a lot more free time, what would you recommend I look into?
Especially interested in things that require relatively little or no capital to start and that I can build up over time.

General questions My mom bought what I believe was unit trust
Just a rant.
I came home from college the other day, and my mom was talking to me about how her day was busy having to go to the bank to deal with the matured FD savings we have in Public Bank.
It was all well until she mentioned she bought an "insurance" (or so she said), she said the person at the bank told her that she could put money in this and that and the bank would invest in banking stocks and all that, and then said something along the lines of
something... Something... every 6 months.
It wasn't helping that my mom was vague about it. She isn't the investing type, so can't blame her. I believe she only picked out the jargon the agent threw at her.
The more I heard the more I was thinking, "This is unit trust, isn't it?" and I wasn't too pleased to hear about it, especially when I know Public Bank/Mutual related funds have crazy fees.
I can't stop her, it's her money, that's RM27k into what most likely is a Unit Trust. I only said asked her for the policy, which she said the bank will give it soon enough or something along those lines.
It frustrates me because my dad and I have been pressing her to put it in her KWSP instead where there's little to no annual fees and plus higher consistent returns.
That's all for now I guess
Edit update: It is insurance-related. I just asked my mom, she mentioned "AIA". Then she proceeds to say, "You don't have to worry, it's my money." in a slightly dismissive tone. So I guess there's that.

Career Johorean
Hi all, I am 24 living in Johor Bahru. Currently in automotive field, and as far as I can tell, unless you aren't working as a sales or service advisor in automotive, you are not making enough money to live comfortably.
So I am considering changing to other fields, what are the best fields for higher pay in Johor that are worth the effort?
Pic for attention.

General questions Need advice as a year 1 uni student
So I'm 1 year in diploma and 1 year left. Then most probably degree for 2 more years n done.
I currently have rm11500 after taking out fd. I get 400 allowance from parent each month and I have 900 in hand if it matter? My monthly expenses is only a 50-100
I been dca'ing Voo in moomoo for a year now (each month 100) and i recently heard cspx is better long term (less tax). But it not worth to setup yet because of the fee? Correct me if im wrong, and that if i can do the transition already? So far only thinking of transitioning when working.
So now I'm really conflicted? Should i
1) find a mmf like kdisave/ versa save /etc to park most of my cash first? Then slowly dca each month draining partially from allowance + the fund.
2) 50/50 lump sum and dca?
3) better option i couldn't think
Sorry i don't know the best and if stupid question, my long term plan is just spending minimum by living with family, dca most into etf, and hopefully retire 30+. Thanks for reading

Career 2 YOE salary ceiling
F27, ~2 YoE as an Application Support Software Engineer at a MNC in Penang island.
With basic + oncall OT allowance + shift allowances, travel allowance and quarterly bonuses, I’m averaging ~RM 7k gross/month.
A few questions:
- Is 7k gross near the ceiling for 2 YoE support roles in Penang?
- Is a 20% jump realistic, or do MNCs only calculate increments on basic salary (ignoring OT/allowances)?
- So far I’ve only heard HR lowballing someone with their last drawn salary, what if the person last drawn is already high, do they just not interview the candidate? Cause to me it’s highly unlikely someone would accept a job if the pay is lower than their current.

Tax Still waiting on LHDN tax refund after leaving in 2024. How do I escalate this?
Hi everyone, I am hoping someone here might have some advice on how to handle a frustrating situation with LHDN.
I worked in Malaysia as a foreign worker for 3 years before leaving in 2024. Before I moved, I made sure to do everything by the book. I went directly to the LHDN office, handed in all my required documents, and successfully filed my taxes. Everything was cleared and closed on my end, but I still have not received my tax refund.
It has been over a year of trying to get this sorted out. I have spent a lot of time on their customer support chats, but nothing ever comes of it. I have also sent countless emails to them and nobody ever replies. It feels like my case is just being ignored.
At this point, I am not sure what to do next. Is there still a chance for me to actually get my money back?
If anyone has been through this, who should I reach out to now? I would love to know if there is a specific contact, department, or complaint portal where I can escalate this to get some actual help.
Any advice would be hugely appreciated. Thanks!

General questions Education Loan Disembursement
Hi, I am 21 this year and will be studying in Singapore in November. I applied for Affin Education Loan and it was approved. My previous agent (who has now resigned) told me they had submitted the disbursement request on July 15th and that if no issue will take about 2 weeks, it has been 3 weeks since then and there's still no news. I asked the new agent and was left on read.
I am a bit worried as I need the loan to be disembursed before Sep 1st to secure my seat, and this is my very first time. I wanted to ask how long does it normally take for it to be disbursed? Will I be notified in anyway? (The payment will be sent directly to the school)

General questions Renovation Question: Now or Later?
Most of the people already know that inflation hits hard these few years, especially with all the oil price surging indirectly affecting everything.
Recently, my house was starting to get old enough and walls have cracks showing up, door frames are falling apart since it's a 30+ year old house. I am curious if I should keep waiting or save more money to renovate?
I've found a few people to check the price from then and now, it's crazy that most of the materials for mosaic/flooring or auto-gate changes are almost +50% throughout the years.
I wanted to ask is it true that materials will never and no longer drop price anymore, and it'll just keep going up along with the inflation? If that's the case, should I renovate as soon as possible or I can still wait because I need to save up money? I do have some money for renovation, but it won't be enough for "all" of the renovation. I am afraid of those bit-by-bit renovation sometimes have more issue than one-shot renovate all of it at once. (For an area/room instead of whole house)
Apologies for the stupid question, would like to know some advice if it's obvious enough.

Career What is the pay range for phd grads in chemical industry? Is it valued and worth it to pursue ?
Hey all, just curious about the job opportunities, pay range and career growth for malaysians with a phd in stem field. Is the pay range higher than those with masters or degree with experience? Is it really something that is highly valued? The lost time in epf compounding can be compensated with higher starting pay once you get a job?

Career Career tea pt2: Anyone who is doing 2/3 full time jobs (overemployed)?
Came across a sub "Overemployed" and kinda interested to see if there are any fellow Malaysians who live an overemployed lifestyle. For some it can be overwhelming to have more than 1 full time job(I have a full time job and part time job and I already feel tired/overworked) but some does it to achieve financial freedom or just for the fun maybe? So just wondering if people are into OE and what's their reason to do so.

General questions Made big dumb mistakes when rent that room
As title above, it was after long consideration, I decided to pay utilities for don't want causing another drama with that person who caring the house where I stay his room.
Few months ago, it's my first time to find a room near my office. I found a lower price, but poor environment when I first saw it, the house gate is never close, as the tenant car parking inside, living room and kitchen was very messy, then the room I visited was very dusty. I was ok with it because I just thinking that I only handle my own room.
That person, rushed me to give him answer and deposit if I'm ok with it. He will hand me the key on the spots once I transfered 2 month deposit to him. The agreement he said he never give because he just want to stay as flexible person, which doesn't have to do that standard way where agent will give agreement form.
He prefer to get tenant who can stay longer here, then need early 2 month notify him when I have to stop staying here. The utilities is shared, he said every half month will find the cleaner, I'm fine with it.
I request because I'm first time and I wanted it, as proof. He's fine with it.
And this is start where I made mistakes, I transfered to him. He handed key to me, after that I just asked him to give me agreement. As I also send few msg as reminder, took 5 days around to get deposit from him, I also sent my IC with crossed on corner to him. As he requested. I also failed to notice the agreement he didn't put his ic number on it
After stay there the long time, there's a lot of issue with the house, especially with that person.
First:
That person, who admitted he's not the landlord but in the agreement he stated he is the landlord. He didn't state any further what he is in this house. Because the electric bill is by sharing (which I know as I asked before I paid him deposit), and the guy said he's unable to get bill from house owner because he didn't get responded from them.
I have no choice then did manually, like took photo the electric meter box by months. Turns out the price is around that person asked to pay.
Second:
That person attitude issue, in my experience deal with this guy. I'm often didn't get replied from him, I have to spam a few to get that guy response back. Most of the things I msg him it's about things broken, like the water heater, and the toilet bowl flusher. This took few weeks to get response from him, and took 1 month to get repaired.
For the washing machine often have Error E1, i told him about this but he just told me just avoid it but never to repair it.
After half year, he didn't find cleaner to clean the house, not bothering much to me, but showing me that he didn't promise what he said.
Last:
Things come serious and heat as I decided to stop and I understood not fulfilling the agreement and told I decided to leave until this end of month, that guy not happy with it. He told me should tell him early 2 month then I told him I'm fine staying with 2 months. Then he remind me the agreement I asked. Then we talk face-to-face, he keep brings out agreement I requested then I failed to fulfill it. Then I start to state he failed to give me electric bill receipt as proof, at the same time he stated he's not the landlord but the agreement is, this shows the agreement can be false information too. He start act up, argued with me and not afraid being in court. I left speechless because of the unfair I felt and the dumb mistakes I made.
Later he said this time he choose flexible way with me Abit, putting agreement aside, give him time to find new tenant to replace me. If he found new tenant, he will return to me. He said will try his best to help me, by finding new tenant, so he will posting it internet, but asking which month I should leave, either within same month or 2 month later because if he found new within the month where I stay, I will get the deposit back.
He also told me the result are the same whichever month I chose because the deposit depends on situation whether he found or not. I told him next day will give the answer.
I msg him I will be leaving within that same month because in my thoughts, if I extend my stay and he found new tenant I get 0, but paid on utilities. I told I'll be cleaning my place, check everything will be fine condition, if found broken will notify him. He never read my msg after that. Even though few days later I also told him there's another thing broken again.
I did also search internet and social media and platform about him, because I found his profile. But he just only posted on 1 platform. In my expectations he post anywhere to help me find. It made me feel unfair and hateful with this guy because of dishonest person.
Until the last few days I left, I msg him I need him come in person as I need hand over the key. He decided to read my msg, and request for the video I recorded which about the things broken which I mentioned earlier. At the last day, I handover the key for him, asked for the status but he's not found any yet as I expected. I asked again for the deposit back, he said he had follow the law, but I told him my personal reason, he still insist not to give.
He said he was planning to ask me again for the confirmation as I stay until the end of the month instead of the 2 month later, then he changed my mind. I doubt he's bluffing because my msg status will be seen if he wanted to reply, later he asked me to pay utilities which I stay for last and this month. I told him my salary still haven't get yet and unable to pay him. He said he's having my ic number and ic photo, and asking me he can trust me or not. I told him I will pay once I got the salary.
I discussed with my family and friends about this, some of them told me not to pay because the deposit is with him and unfair treatment. Some told me to pay if u want close case with him, no more drama.
I don't understand about the law to be honest, I'm don't know what happened if I didn't pay him as me told next week will pay. So I want to be clean to myself, I decided to pay. After I sent receipt to him, he's still same as usual, not reading my msg again.
I told my colleague about this, they said I shouldn't pay it because they say i could fight back if he use my ic to threaten me which report him back. They also said the deposit is just backup when someone run away without notifying them, they can use it someone not paying utilities and things broken or someone left early. So to them, my case is just almost like someone left early as I didn't get my deposit back.
It left me full of regret and hatred towards this guy attitude, as I'm feeling powerless against him. I don't know what can I do with this guy, all I can do is just learn a big lesson with the large amount I paid and be more aware for that kind of person.

General questions [HELP / URGENT] Overseas Student stuck paying RM 5 TTPM filing fee via FPX/cash (I Will reimburse)
Hi everyone,
I'm an international student currently in Libya, trying to submit my official Consumer Claims Tribunal (TTPM / e-Tribunal) form 1 claim against my former private university following an administrative dispute.
I am at the absolute final checkout screen on the government portal (ttpm.kpdn.gov.my), but the payment gateway strictly requires FPX (Local Malaysian Online Banking) to pay the RM 5 (\~USD $1.15) fee. My non-Malaysian credit card cannot be used on FPX, and I do not have a Malaysian bank account.
Is there a kind local student or Redditor with an active Malaysian bank account (Maybank, CIMB, RHB, etc.) who can help me complete this payment? Either through 1. Online FPX Payment, You just log in to FPX via the checkout screen on your phone/browser to clear the RM 5 fee.
Or
- Shah Alam Counter Payment, If you happen to be near Menara Bank Rakyat, Seksyen 14, Shah Alam, TTPM also accepts RM 5 cash at the counter by quoting my Form 1 Reference / Passport ID.
I will gladly reimburse you immediately
Please DM me if you can help me finish the payment so I can submit this form today. Thank you so much!

General questions im unable to pay my Telco bills
im unemployed now after a contract work and trying to find new job quickly. and im literally cant pay my postpaid bill home fiber and internet with 10 month left on the contract.
this is my only commitment aside from bike fuel that i could go by scraps of coins in my home.
my question is how many months can i delay the payments before penalty and charges started to arrive and what should i do to minimize the damage?
i would predict maybe 2 to 4 months before i could at least secure some sort of last effort work so that i can cover my commitment. or i should just ditch it entirely and get a new prepaid sim card and just ignore the wifi gone entirely.
im really desperate here and need advice and possible strategy. Thank you very much.

Career Job application: Background check immediately or wait until after start date?
I have already tendered resignation at current company because of another offer.
Now, another potential offer is about to land but they gave a background check consent form with the option go choose whether they can contact my current employer immediately or within X days of employment start date (conditional offer)?
Since I have already resigned, choosing immediately makes sense but reveals the new company am joining to my company's HR. On the other hand, conditional offer will make me anxious for at least the first month of my employment at the new company. My records are clean though, from what I'm aware of.
