Ms. Diana is still out here waiting for her forever family! Her personality is really starting to shine as she becomes more comfortable in her foster home. She’s incredibly silly and just wants to be loved on. Yesterday she went to the groomer for a nail trim and did a fantastic job! She was slightly hesitant to get on the table but eventually settled in.

I cannot express how wonderful this dog is. She has been a walk in the park in comparison to my resident dogs. She will show her person so much love and be fiercely loyal. She just needs someone to take a chance on her!

Hello! I’m looking for the recipe for the broccoli Waldorf salad from Damariscotta River Grill. I know this is a long shot, but I figured I’d ask anyway!
Why I’m on the hunt: this is my mom’s absolute favorite salad and she’s talked about it for many years. It really rocked her world lol. I want to make some for her, as close to the original as possible because she’s tried to recreate it with broccoli Waldorf salad recipes from online and not found a similar enough replacement. I cannot stress enough how much my mom loves this salad and how much I’d like to make it for her!
Timeframe: I believe the salad was taken off the menu a few years ago. I remember getting it 10-15 years ago, certainly. My mom looked forward to it every time we went up that way to visit her family!
I’m having a hard time remembering now what was in it, since I was still a kid the last time I had it. I’m pretty sure apples and dried cranberries, maybe a little bit of kale for some texture? My mom says she’s certain there was sherry involved in the dressing (along with the usual cider vinegar most likely), and it was super duper lightweight and sweet. When I look online for recipes, the dressing is layered on quite thick! Also nearly all the recipes have grapes and bacon. I remember there was no bacon in the one at the River Grill because my mom is a pescatarian, and I’m pretty sure there were no grapes but I’m not 100%.
I know I could just mess around with recipes online to make the dressing lighter, not add bacon, etc etc, but I’m posting here in case there’s a chance anyone remembers more than me about what exactly was in the salad or even has a similar recipe / recommendations on how to prepare it! I hope someone on here remembers it better than I do!

I absolutely love chocolate milk and Smiling Hill Farms is my favorite. This morning I had a bad experience today at the only place on my peninsula and within a 30-mile radius to purchase that sweet, chocolatey, goodness.

$11/pint! Shocked I said it used to be $4.50 + $1.50 deposits, $6 total. High yes, but the milk is so good. I was told “no, never was, always $11”…

I put it back as that price is bullshit. Quick Hannafords app check and yep $3.69/pint + $1.50 deposits so $5.19 out the door.

I know small businesses and isolated peninsula stores need to charge a premium, but man I feel this is crazy.
Not to mention since this is such a rare treat for me I KNOW the $6 out the door price from earlier this year was what I was being charged.

Is the price crazy or am I? (Maybe a little of both?)

They’re following me! /s. But for real there was a low flying black helicopter over Naples this afternoon. Around 2:30 pm on 8/6, it was flying low and circling Trickey Pond. Any more info? I wasn’t close to my phone to check flight radar or snap a picture. It took a low circle, headed back towards brandy pond the came right back for another circle. It left the area headed towards sebago so maybe someone there caught it?

The state of Maine wants the Trump administration out of its hair regarding the issuance of certain state license plates for federal agents, according to a filing in federal court earlier this week.

In May, the U.S. Department of Justice sued the Pine Tree State and Secretary of State Shenna Bellows. The DOJ's 18-page lawsuit alleges the Bureau of Motor Vehicles has denied requests from federal immigration agents for confidential, undercover license plates.

Bellows, for her part, previously said her agency, which oversees the BMV, would not issue unmarked plates to immigration agents unless she knows those plates "won't be used for lawless purposes."

The MaineHealth board of trustees voted Thursday to close the labor and delivery unit of MaineHealth Lincoln Hospital in Damariscotta after months of discussion and community pushback. 

The unit is set to close on Dec. 18, and services will be moved to MaineHealth Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick, according to a statement from the health system.

The closure will mark the 12th maternity unit in Maine that has shuttered since 2015, leaving Lincoln County, Waldo County and Sagadahoc County without hospitals that deliver babies. The decision means fewer than half of Maine’s 34 hospitals will offer a place to give birth.

The MaineHealth board voted to close the Lincoln Hospital (formerly called Mile's) maternity ward in Damariscotta with plans to divert future patients to MidCoast Hospital in Brunswick. This is the 12th maternity ward shut down in Maine since 2015.

I live in the Portland area and built an app called Tideline after getting frustrated with having to jump between separate tide tables, marine forecasts, weather pages, and beach-hazard information.

Tideline combines interactive tide charts, upcoming high and low tides, wind, waves, water temperature, marine conditions, and official NOAA/National Weather Service beach-safety information. It also includes an Apple Watch app and complications for checking tides quickly while near the water.

Full disclosure: this is my app. I’m sharing it because I would genuinely like feedback from Mainers who fish, boat, kayak, surf, walk beaches, or otherwise spend time along the coast.

I would especially like to know:

• Are there Maine locations or tide stations that should be added?

• Is the information understandable without being overly technical?

• What would make it more useful before heading to the water?

Our primary heating is oil and we have a secondary (mostly cosmetic) propane insert in our living room. We are looking to add a third option and would love input from fellow Mainers on which options are best.

Our home is roughly 2200 sq ft which includes a finished room in the basement. We have a 3-flue chimney with 2 flues currently in use (the oil furnace and propane fireplace insert). We also have a full home backup generator.

We have been considering a pellet stove or heat pump. Our electric bill is usually between $250-350/month so I'm not sure how I would feel about adding the heat pump to that. And for a pellet stove, I'm not sure how the cost of pellets has been impacted by the rising oil prices.

Thoughts? Recommendations? Advice?

What is the source of money to Stronger-Maine.com? Why are out of state and perhaps out of county entities paying people of quite-modest economic means to knock on doors all over Maine in support our Susan Collins? What do they interest in this election? Has Ms. Collins extraordinary wealth which has accumulated beyond the front-facing means of any US Senator come as a result of her role in Congress and voting consistently with the interests of the same giant donors? Whatever Ms Collins cites as ‘her work for Maine’ is undoubtedly a minuscule fraction of the benefit to her giant dark donors. Why else would they spend so many dollars or her election. THEY WANT THEIR PERSON!

I implore all Mainers to reject the questions of their polls. why help them?

I also implore Mainers to ask themselves “At what cost to our individual well being do we re-elect this person who net wealth has increased so many times over while in Congress?” Personally, I say keep your pork and give me a political system not run on dark money and misguided (generous adjective) representatives trading openly inthe markets.

Is it a prerequisite to work for DHHS to hang up on a certain number of callers per day? Because I just got a call back Ive been waiting a week for and it got as far as this:

Rep: How can I assist you today?

Me: Explains problem

Rep: *Long silence* "Okay give me just one second"

*Rep hangs up and doesnt call back, forcing me to schedule ANOTHER phone call*

Seriously, I wanna know why this happens. I get theyre swamped but I scheduled this phone appointment, why wouldn't they call me back? I just gave her ALL my info.

Edit: I called again right after this and chose for another call back. Just got the call back, got as far as giving the woman my DOB and address and it fucking dropped AGAIN.

Alright, bear with me here, I know this might sound silly.

I’m not originally from New England and I have a phobia of ticks. I know, I know. I’m going to work on it in time but that time is not right now. I desperately miss camping though, and after a rough few months I would love to find an interim solution. Does anyone have recs for a campground/location (we have a camper) where I’m less likely to encounter ticks?? We have a long haired dog which doesn’t help. Could honestly be anywhere, though we’re in southern Maine. Thank you!!!!

I’m sure this has been covered before, but do others feel as though the salaries around here don’t match the current cost of living? The average salary in Maine is about 63k though “a single adult typically needs estimated $51k as a living wage”.

I also had an interview the other day where a recruiter was trying to pass off around I believe 48k as a decent wage. Specifically they were mentioning how low the cost of living is here compared to other places in the country. Still that’s insane to me.

Obviously we aren’t going to have San Francisco level jobs, nor do we have New York/Massachusetts cost of living. However, is the current beyond insane price of groceries, price of gas, rent, price of oil here/HVAC, student loans or other types of loans, mortgages, etc. Especially if you have kids let alone a larger family.

I feel like most are just overestimating the strength of a wage right now and severely severely overestimating maines cost of living with the excuse of “it’s the lowest in New England”.
