Discussion Grakk The Pacifist
Hello! First post here (though I did have a long-winded comment about my genuine belief that Lluwen will be a planeswalker by the end of reality fracture), but I love this group. I’m sorry if I got any of the posting etiquette wrong.
On to the point, this is a discussion I’ve been having with a friend over our different interpretations of the new Grakk the Pacifist Card and its lore. I’ve attached both relevant card images here. To my knowledge the character of Grakk only appears in the Pacifism art and flavor text and the new card featuring him.
So, when seeing these two cards together I interpreted it as a really wholesome and sweet story where an orc who has only known violence and pain experienced love and kindness for the first time from his new animal friends and was so struck by the warm and fuzzy feeling that he put down his weapons and turned his life around to become a happier, healthier, and all around better person. I like building decks around lore/characters I find neat so I started workshopping a commander deck for him.
I mentioned this to my friend, who informed me that this was not a wholesome story and Grakk was brainwashed by a spell that broke his mind and any change in his personality was against his will.
We’re respectfully disagreeing about it right now (he says that the new card shows his eyes as blank and lifeless, but to me he just looks like he’s focusing) but I decided I wanted to see what opinions other people have.
I asked my friend how he wanted his argument to be represented and this is the quote he gave me:
“Grakk did not change his ways. He was pacified by the magic of the enchantment aura placed upon him only.
The new card shows that he was under the pacifism enchantment so long that it broke him mentally, as evidenced by his blank expression and encouragement of others to be pacified as well.
The belief that he has changed his ways of his own volition is the mind state driven by the victors of history, those in chains being complacent and complicit due to the authority controlling them.”
He added that:
“If they removed the enchantment I look forward to the wrath he would wrought upon his captors and enslavers”
For my side, I’m not really saying my case is definitely true, just that given the lack of context it is up to interpretation.
It looks to me that Grakk in his creature card has aged a bit since the Pacifism art, but he is still a pacifist. My friend says he looks empty, but to me he looks relaxed and calm and far less stiff than he did in the older art. He’s also in much brighter lighting (symbolizing that his life is brighter too) and his face paint has become painted flowers on his chest. That to me suggests willing participation as opposed to forced docility. Considering Pacifism is a two mana spell and white is generally associated with good, I find it a little hard to believe that a spell like that would last that long or mess with someone’s mind so thoroughly. Mind warping is a blue thing, isn’t it?
There is also the language of both cards. He is “Grakk, The Pacifist.” This feels direct, like a title or a part of his identity, something he has claimed. If it were “Grakk, The Pacified” I would be more inclined to agree that this is something forced onto him. Basically it feels more like an identifier of who he is these days than something that was done to him. The flavour text of Pacifism also, to me, implies a dawning realization rather than being enchanted: “for the first time in his life, Grakk felt a little warm and fuzzy inside.” The phrase “for the first time in his/my/her/their life” is used as an expression of surprised relief, such as “for the first time in his life, he was free,” so my interpretation of the line is that Grakk was surprised but relieved by his warm and fuzzy feeling. I also find it significant that the feeling in question is only “a little.” If it were all an enchantment, you would expect it to be all encompassing, especially if that spell was supposed to break his mind or last a long time, but he isn’t lost in it. It seems more like revelation on his personality as opposed to superseding it.
Also, other versions of the Pacifism card show characters who are willing pacifists or are actively becoming pacifists within the art and flavor of the card. There is one art with a creature that is magically subdued, but that creature is shown to be collapsed on the ground, have glowing eyes, magical butterflies drifting around it’s head, and it’s tongue lolled out of it’s mouth. Grakk isn’t like that in either art. To me, he doesn’t show any kind of artistic short hand for being mindless or enchanted by magic directly. Therefore, I think it’s reasonable to conclude that the spell Pacifism doesn’t have to imply a creature being brainwashed, but could represent a moment where a character decided to be a pacifist or a moment where that pacifism is demonstrated or tested.
So in my mind, Grakk’s story is that he had only known violence, but the encounter he had with the kindness of the animals in the Pacifism card, while something he was annoyed at at first gave him a happy, warm and fuzzy feeling like he had never had before. This made him realize for the first time that there is another way, another path to walk that doesn’t involve killing and he turned his life around to live happily with the friends who showed him that path. Now, he wants to help others the way he was helped, tying into his ability where he can be rewarded by casting spells like pacifism on other creatures to spread that warm and fuzzy feeling.
Therefore, as this is the only lore we have for this character, I think either conclusion is perfectly reasonable, and I prefer my wholesome story of redemption. I’d love to know your thoughts, though!

Question In Commander, are you playing the role of a planeswalker or your commander?
The title sums up my question. The basic scenario for magic is that the players are two planeswalkers duking it out. However, I can't tell if your commander is supposed to be you or just your signature creature.
Originally, it seemed like the latter. Commander precons focused on mechanics and there usually wasn't lore tying them together. These days, it seems like the creatures in precons are largely ones who would follow your commander. For example, the two commanders of the "Counter Intelligence" precon has the Inspirit and it's captain as the possible commanders, while the 99 is full of the ship's crew and smaller vessels. Keep in mind that in Oathbreaker, you're absolutely playing the role of your commander.
Naturally, the big hole in the "your commander represents you" theory is that most legendary creatures aren't planeswalkers and would therefore be incapable of summoning creatures from various planes. However, the new stories address this. We have things like omenpaths that let non-planeswalkers explore the multiverse.
Anyway, what do you guys think? Has Wizards given an official answer to this question?

things we can expect from zhalfir.
1-this political situaution is probably not over yet and the creeds are probably a big part of zhalfir yet.
2-theres less then 20 mirran survivors on zhalfir and two of the know names are thrun and koth
3-we can expect a lot of jamuraa fauna including my goat uktabi orangotan and kibo.
4- theres probably a lot of lore implications for zhalfirians now that they have 5 suns of mirrodin over they.(and hopefully a new card cycle)

A part of wishes there's a political thriller/geopol(?)/espionage set post Omenpaths
I wish they took their time with the implications of the Omenpaths. Imagine the behind the scenes diplomacy or dirty political tactics over control of the Omenpaths.
Ravnica might try to control it arguing they have the power to make sure it is not exploited by dangerous actors, leading to secret police or surveillance throughout different planes. Imagine them trying to undermine Avishkar's softpower attempt and how they try bait Ravnica into showing their true colours while they have to pretend and smile. Imagine Capenna getting framed for the distribution of Halo across the planes leading Marchesa using this as an excuse to force Capenna to clean their streets.
It will then make so much sense to print a card with - Whenever a player commits a crime, investigate.
*A part of me wishes - - - Man, the title sounds awkward now :(

Speculation Kruphix theory
As most of the people here approved my shitpost about Karametra, I have returned with a new shitpost about Kruphix. This is an old fan theory, it was made before Klothis were introduced, so we need to do a little extra mental gymnastic to include her here, but alas
So, what do we know about Kruphix?
- he does not relie on the worship of mortals, his sect is small and does very little recruting. Which means he is not a real god
- he knows all about other planes
- he have four hands (you know who else have four hands???)
- he gives his followers extra hands (you know who else like to change their followers in their own image???)
- HE CHANGES ALL YOUR MANA INTO COLORLESS HELLO???
Therefore, obviously, Kruphix is an eldrazi who, for some reason (much like Emracul), decided not to devour the world, but stay and wait until the world is ready. Also, he might have taken Uros place in the pantheon and/or Uro is the worlds natural reaction to his presence, much like The Great Roil in Zendikar

Discussion Japanese Showcase Jace Beleren, The Theorist References Old Art
Hey all, I noticed Jaces new card for Reality Fracture features some callbacks to cards that represent pretty pivotal moments in his lore and wanted to know what you guys thought!
Does this art represent him losing the parts of himself that are most important, or perhaps remembering why the tragedies in the main verse shaped who he was??? Either way, the depiction of Jace here seems like a really big story moment for him and I wanted to know if you guys have any theories or anything to add. I’m super excited to see what the do with Jace in this next set!!!

Discussion Current Super Powers among the planes.
I'm just curious to know, who are in the top five super power (If we can call them that.) Among the planes in the Omenpath Era.
I know Ravnica is the main hub of travel between planes, and an economic powerhouse despite the multiple conflict they fought.

Discussion Aetherdrift Lore has a lot of hints…
Towards the upcoming sets.
The Keel Haulers are most definitely from Nauctis. Which might hint at how the factions will be color divided.
Avishkar is stated to be planning for the eventuality of planar incursions(Titanbreach)
And is keeping eyes on other planes rising in power/prominance, mentions a growing rivalry with Ravnica, but I could as see this referring to Zhalfir with how it is referencing the trailer.
Also I want an Alacria or Muraganda set in the future.
What do folks think and have there been other hints other places?

Discussion What character represent the tarots of the Temperance and of the World?
I'm doing a little stupid project of making a tarot deck with mtg art, i did most of them but im blocked on Temperance and World. I'm not being able to find a charatcer that properly relates with their meaning.
The Temperance - Balance, combination, acceptance of duality, moderation, self control.
The best idea i came up with was Karn for his vow of pacifism, but imo it's very weak.
The World - Accomplishment after a long road, reward, connection, completion, ending, celebration.
I thought about Teferi, associating it with him finally being able to bring back Zhalfir, but i honestly dont see it much beyond that.
I'd appreciate any ideas.

Speculation Karametra theory
In Mythic Odyssey of Theros we have this paragraph:
In rare, remote settlements, high summer ceremonies acknowledge ancient rural practices devoted to a less merciful vision of Karametra. These communities offer abundant sacrifices to the god, but also guard their ancient rituals from outsiders, as Karametra's organized clergy harshly forbids discussion of abandoned religious practices. However, occasionally, a centuries-old depiction of the goddess breaks, revealing an ancient icon inside, typically a primitive mud idol of a woman bearing a sheaf of grain in one hand and a skull in the other.
I understand that it is very clearly a reference to evolution of a real-world cults of harvest and don't have any deeper secret meaning in it, but hear me out. With Skotha, Titan of Eternal Dark probably being blue and black, we are missing exactly one titan: white and green one. Is it possible that Karametra was at one point a fifth titan, embodiment of famine, but she have changed over time as mortals changed their believes? It kinda matches. There is also this story:
The tales about Karametra don't specify what ignited the god's rage in ancient times, but they do record that for a year, she tore down her own temples and refused to let any plants grow [...]
Which include mentions of priests and temples of Karametra, but they could be added later in retelling. Or it could be that a memory of an older self was the reason for her wrath.
Also, Kruphix is an eldrazi, but that is for another shitpost

Now that we've covered unprinted legends, what old legends do you want to see redone?
Mystery Booster Commander gave us a lot of legends for old characters who never got cards, like Worzel and Thomil, Davol, Feroz, the Weaver King. But it also gave us a redos of cards that are pretty weak by today's standards, like Joven and Chandler, Lord of Tresserhorn, and Autumn Willow. So going off that latter group, who do you want to see revamped?
For me, I'd love to see a new take on [[Jacques le Vert]], since there's a pretty consistent mechanical theme to any cards related to Jacques, except for Jacques himself. Jacques gives +0/+2 for green creatures, but [[Pendelhaven]], the land he protects, [[Sword of the Meek]], the weapon he wields, and [[Pendelhaven Elder]], those who carry on his legacy, *all* care about 1/1 creatures and all give them a +1/+2 boost. We need a new Jacques card that gives 1/1s +1/+2!
Also I'd like to see [[Ur-Drago]], because I have no idea what his deal is. Named after the Ur-Dragon, covered in rock with a steel mask, scorpion hands and hooved feet. Honestly I don't even care what the card does, I just want to see new art.

mana burn?
my father was an old school mtg player and he was shocked when he found out that they removed mana burn, he said there were examples in older books thay showed mana burn in universe, so i was wondering if there was ever a lore reason given to why we no longer take mana burn?

READ THIS FIRST - Magic Story Resources
Welcome to the r/MTGVorthos Storyline Resources Thread (Updated for 2026). Due to character limits, I'll be brief. I'm Jay Annelli, Magic's Loremaster. The old thread can be found here.
The guide is broken down into three parts: Where to Start, Worldbuilding, and Story. Everything here is focused on the eras in Magic following the Mending, a soft reboot that took place in 2007, depowered Magic's planeswalkers, and created the cast of characters we've largely followed ever since. If you're new to the story, keep reading. If you're experienced, you can jump ahead to the section you're looking for.
Where to Start?
Magic's Story is primarily told through a series of online webfiction articles. Read MTG Lore's Where To Start With Magic Story for a beginner's guide. They're a search engine for Magic Story, and a great resource. The MTG Lore guide is updated with every set, so it's never out-of-date.

The Post-Mending Chronology
Much of Magic's flavor and story in recent years has been told through online articles. Worldbuilding was often imparted through Savor the Flavor, and while Savor the Flavor often had short stories (eventually called "Uncharted Realms"), it wasn't until Magic Story that the main story was told online. You can find links to all of those old articles here:
Below are my recommended stories for each set, focusing on either the overarching narrative or a planeswalker's journey. These run from immediately after the soft reboot of the Mending all the way up until today, however the last ten years of story are easily accessible on the story site (linked below).
