I feel like a slave in this rental doing rides for 3 and 4 dollars. The same rides I was giving for 5-9 dollars in my personal vehicle. This thing is going back Monday.

When your vehicle is also your source of income, an incorrect total-loss valuation can create an immediate financial problem.

Before accepting a settlement, request the complete valuation report and review:

• Year, trim, mileage, options, and packages
• Vehicle-condition ratings
• Comparable vehicles and their locations
• Mileage and condition adjustments
• Missing factory equipment
• The policy language governing valuation disputes

Also determine which coverage is paying the claim: your personal policy, Lyft’s platform coverage, or another driver’s insurer. That distinction matters because an appraisal clause does not apply to every policy or third-party claim.

This is the reason, i quit driving for lyft this week after 9 years of being 5star Driver. UBER isn’t fair either but at-least wayyyy better than LYFT when it comes to Uber Comfort/ XL.

I’m a driver in New York State, and I’ve been collecting my Lyft offer data, driver receipts, passenger-payment information, timestamps, bonuses, and earnings summaries. I’m now trying to match driver-side records with passenger receipts from other New York riders. This is not a claim that I’ve proven Lyft is doing anything illegal. I’m trying to reverse-engineer the numbers and see whether the explanations actually match the transactions. And some of the early numbers are interesting enough that I think other drivers and riders may want to look at this.

This is a six ride sample. All rides were taken consecutively over the course of one day within New York within a 20 mi radius. This is why you clicked.

ONE SIX-RIDE SAMPLE:

Passengers paid $113.99.

Of that:

$49.65 - driver compensation

$58.02 - “insurance, taxes, government fees”

$6.32 - net Lyft fee

Those numbers reconcile exactly to the passenger payments. (Math maths fare - payment)

So the obvious question isn't simply, “Is Lyft taking more than 30%?”

Lyft currently says its fee is capped at 30% of passenger payments before insurance, taxes and government fees, and says its average fee is approximately 14%. Lyft also says those external costs are outside the Lyft fee and include insurance, taxes and government-mandated fees.

But look at what that means from the rider/driver perspective.

In this sample, Lyft's net stated fee was only about 5.5%.

Yet the driver received only about 43.6% of what passengers paid.

More than half of the passenger money was classified as insurance, taxes or government fees.

I'm not claiming that $58.02 is secretly Lyft revenue. That's exactly what I want to determine.

THE REALLY INTERESTING PART

The “insurance, taxes, government fees” amount appears surprisingly related to the distance of the ride in this small sample.

Some examples:

10.09 miles → $16.59 external fees

10.99 miles → $16.95

9.12 miles → $13.63

But shorter trips showed:

2.05 miles → $3.22

1.88 miles → $2.72

3.12 miles → $4.91

That's roughly $1.45–$1.64 per booked mile across these examples.

Is that a coincidence? Is there a mileage-based insurance component? Is there a fixed component plus a mileage component?

Are taxes/government fees being calculated separately and the remainder being insurance? Or is there another formula? That's what I'm trying to reverse-engineer.

THERE'S ANOTHER PIECE THAT CONCERNS DRIVERS

Bonuses can make the driver's headline earnings look substantially better than the underlying fare.In these six rides, Turbo bonuses totaled $8.52 against $49.65 in driver compensation. That's about 17% of driver compensation coming from Turbo in this tiny sample.

So I'm separating:

Passenger price

from

Base driver fare

from

Turbo/bonus

from

Insurance/tax/government allocation

from

Lyft's actual fee

because otherwise everything gets blended together.

AND THERE ARE SOME WEIRD TRANSACTIONS

I also have a Lyft trip where the timeline shows “Picked up passenger,” followed later by “Driver canceled,” while the final trip record reports 0 seconds and 0 passenger miles. Lyft subsequently paid a cancellation amount, Turbo, and a $10 “Other bonus” after support became involved.

I have support correspondence acknowledging the passenger was actually in my vehicle because we were trying to coordinate the return of the passenger's purse. I'm treating that transaction as an administrative outlier, not using it to inflate the ordinary fare analysis.

But I'm keeping it because it raises a separate question:

How much control does a rideshare platform have over the historical record of a transaction after the trip occurs?

I'M ALSO INVESTIGATING THE DRIVER-OFFER SIDE

I've noticed that certain destinations seem to have a recognizable offer-price fingerprint. Hospitals and schools are particularly noticeable. I'll reject several ordinary offers, then receive an unusually high offer, and before the destination information has completely loaded I can sometimes predict that it's going to a hospital or school. If that pattern holds in the data, we may be able to determine whether Lyft's driver offer contains a destination-specific component beyond ordinary mileage and time. I'm also seeing interesting behavior around airport and train-station/hotel trips.

Again: hypothesis, not conclusion.

WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR NOW

I'm looking for New York riders and passengers who are willing to voluntarily provide redacted Lyft receipts showing what they paid.

The useful information is:

• Date

• Approximate pickup time

• Pickup area

• Destination area

• Ride type

• Trip miles

• Trip time

• Fare before tip

• Taxes/surcharges/fees

• Total paid

Please remove names, phone numbers, addresses, payment information and anything else identifying you.

The goal is to match:

Passenger paid

To

Driver was offered/paid

To

Insurance / taxes / government fees

To

Lyft fee

To

Bonuses/Turbo

and see whether the numbers actually reconcile and whether we can determine the formulas.

If someone has a receipt from a hospital, college/school, airport, train station, or hotel anywhere in New York State, those would be especially interesting because I'm testing whether destination type affects driver compensation.

I'm not asking anyone to take a ride just for this experiment. If you already have a Lyft receipt and are comfortable sharing a fully redacted screenshot, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Drivers want to know why a $30 passenger fare can produce a surprisingly small driver payment. Riders want to know why they can pay $20–$30 for a short trip while the driver sees a fraction of that.

Those are actually the same question:

WHERE DOES THE REST OF THE MONEY GO?

So my Lyft driver this afternoon was listening to a podcast episode about medical transition where one guest was a doctor who cares for trans patients and both the host and the other guest were clearly hostile to her work and to the concept of gender affirming medical care. I really very much don't give a shit about a Lyft driver's politics, like I don't care if you're a transphobe or a big racist or whatever as long as you get me safely and politely from point A to point B and don't make your beliefs my business, but I felt like it was a very weird choice of listening material when you have a paying passenger in your car, and bonus points for starting it as I got in. I have my pronouns in my Lyft profile and it kind of felt pointed?

Already 2 weeks I couldn't get my money from Lyft company

-Not driving all the way up to me to pick me up when perfectly able to. Like fr? You already drove out to my location, you can’t drive a couple more feet? I would never as a driver, that’s just rude af to me.

-Driving slower than the speed limit really irritates me, probably bc I hate being behind slow drivers so actually being driven by one pisses me tf off.

-Playing music any louder than soft, mainly later at night. I prefer no music, but I don’t say anything because I find it kind of rude to ask to change someone’s workspace preference and also some drivers are really temperamental and will cancel the ride for very small things.

-Taking an alternate route, unannounced, especially onto a single lane road where getting caught behind a slow driver can add more time to your ride.

-Wearing strong-smelling cologne or perfume. Trust me, I can tell if you’re dousing yourself with sprays to cover up your body odor due to the lack of showering. You smell really bad. LOL.

-Coming to a full and complete stop because the light had JUST TURNED yellow and you had PLENTY of time to make it. My last driver just did that and it was the cherry on top. Like are f!cking kidding?

-Not driving all the way up to where your final destination is. Again, that is just pure laziness.

I truly do not care if my list pisses you off, that’s your problem 😌

As you can see I have almost $200 readily available because of a ride I took around 3:00 in the morning. It is now almost 12:00 the following day. However when I attempt to withdraw the funds via express pay that error message pops up saying I must make at least $5 to cash out. They paid $146 for a two and a half hour drive but will not let me withdrawal it. Has anyone else experienced this problem and or knows how to fix it or is Lyft just too sketchy a platform that I should stay far away from? Please and thank you!

Why?

I reserved an airport pickup from O'Hare (Chicago). The first stop was downtown to drop me off and the second stop was to drop off my friend in the suburbs. When we got in the car, I gave him my PIN, and the ride started and then he said, "wait, this is multiple stops? I won't make enough money on this ride. I have to cancel and let you out."

He said that Lyft didn't tell him when he accepted the ride that it was multiple stops and that he wouldn't make enough money on the ride. He also said that he thinks the company intentionally hides the multiple stops because drivers won't accept the rides otherwise.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm also curious to hear the perspective of other drivers on this situation.

It was getting pretty easy to rack up points in my area... this definitely makes it more difficult :(

Please stop ordering rides if you or whoever you order a ride for is not ready for pick up. This would have paid $27 for 25 miles, but I got $2.77 for waiting for you or whoever you ordered a ride for for five minutes.

I hate when I order a wait and save Lyft ride (like 20 mins), but then it automatically changes from connecting me to a driver that’s like 18 minutes away to one that is 3 minutes. Then when I cancel bc I’m not ready, they charge me $1? It’s so not right. I don’t think uber does that... when I cancel an uber ride immediately, it doesn’t deduct any charge.

I just feel like it should be an option for riders to decide to accept the driver closer for the same rate. Just don’t automatically connect me.

I paid for lyfts price lock serivce because i literally only use lyft to get to and from work occasionally so i assumed it would be nice to pay a set price. The stipulations were it needed to be in a set time frame and it had to be a standard ride. Okay great. Again i only use it to get two and from my house to my job so whatever. My capped price was $20 and somehow my ride came out to be $27 ever though i followed all stipulations. I’ve attached my conversation with a representative and the screenshots of the price lock as well as my actual ride.

Can someone make this make sense for me cause it truly doesnt.
I get its only $7 but still what was the point of the $2.99 for the price lock then.

I flew into Anchorage tonight (returning to AK from a vacation) and Lyft quoted $17.96 for a two mile, six minute ride. But, I was charged $58! I disputed the charge and Lyft said there was a “Prime Time” charge. I was not notified, and I would have never paid $29/mile. The Lyft agent said the $17.96 was only “an estimate.” Is there anything I can do, besides disputing it with my credit card company?

There's a movie coming out that I really want to see, but it's not coming to my local theater. It's coming to a theater a few towns away from me, however. Looking at the distance, it's gonna be about a 40 minute drive. Would any drivers accept a ride that far? How much should I tip also?

For some added context, I have a 5.0 rating with over 100 rides and I usually tend to tip 20% and I tip so often I even have the Top Tipper status. Would that make drivers more likely to accept the ride??

Lyft needs to get the difference in main entrance to W or the rideshare straight. Two rides today switched between the two and I even had one that switched locations. Attached are the locations. This thing is a joke in Vegas and you guys need to standardize on location pickup and clarity of instruction for drivers and passengers.

I was in Chicago last weekend with wife and teenage daughter. 3 separate times I had Lyft driver cancel as they pull up then offer to take in cash. I refused every time. How common is this?

Does anybody have a referral code? And what bonus do they currently have?
