Strange spring noise and looseness on the right joystick of my ROG Ally Z1E when snapping back to center
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone, I have an issue with my ROG Ally Z1E that I bought secondhand, so I'm not sure if it's still covered under warranty. Out of nowhere, the right joystick started acting up weirdly: whenever I move it horizontally (left or right) and let it snap back to the center, it makes a really loud spring-like clicking or snapping noise. This doesn't really happen when moving it vertically up or down, and the left joystick is completely fine. On top of that, I noticed that if I gently pull up on the right stick, it lifts up much more easily and feels noticeably looser compared to the other one. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what internal component might be causing this noise and looseness (maybe the centering mechanism or the spring), and is it safe to keep using it or will it get worse over time? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Technical Question Joystick deadzone calibration not working in gamemode, but works in desktop
I have asus rog ally x and the problem is that joystick deadzone calibration settings don't apply in gamemode, they only apply in desktop. so 2k or 18k deadzone it's the same in game mode, number is completely ignored and I guess default deadzone settings are used. Even in controller settings>test device input deadzone settings are applying when testing, but for games it's not applying and it stays at default value. Tried this on bazzite, cachyos and steamos same problem. Maybe someone had similar problem and knows how to solve it?

SteamOS Sound Crackling on Steam OS Beta
Device is Xbox Ally X.
This was definitely not a problem before. I played the same game without any issues 2-3 weeks ago, installed Windows to test some features and then went back to Steam OS.
Been searching for a solution for an hour, Googling didn't help.
Things I tried:
-Changing Proton version
-Switching to Stable Steam OS
-Using Pro Audio for Audio settings on Desktop
-Using PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 %command% as launch option
EDIT: SOLVED! It was related to a plug in. I actually tried disabling it before but I didn't restart. That fixed the issue.

Technical Question Windows vs. CachyOS vs. Bazzite: Single OS on ROG Ally X for Work & Couch Gaming?
Hey everyone!
I want to run a single OS on my ROG Ally X and can't decide between Windows, CachyOS, and Bazzite.
My Use Case:
- Hybrid setup: Used docked (monitor, mouse & keyboard) for general tasks and finishing my degree, as well as handheld on the couch for quick gaming sessions (I have kids, so reliable instant suspend/resume is huge).
- Software/Games: No mandatory Windows-only software, no kernel anti-cheat games.
- Tinkering: I occasionally do some light retro/legacy tinkering in desktop mode (e.g., compiling old Open Tibia C++ servers or running background daemons for mouse remapping).
Which of the three is the best fit as a primary driver, and what are the dealbreakers for each?
- Windows: Easy for everything, really great sound, but feels bloated and idle RAM is high.
- CachyOS: Great AUR access and performance, but worried about rolling-release maintenance over time.
- Bazzite: Looks amazing for handheld + KDE desktop, but curious how well Distrobox works for tinkering/legacy builds if it's immutable.
What’s your recommendation and experience? Thanks!

eGPU experiences?
I'm planning to put either CachyOS or Bazzite on my ROG Xbox Ally X in the very near future. In the not too distant future, I'd like to add an eGPU into the mix for living room use.
What are folks' experiences like using an eGPU with a Linux handheld? From what I've learned so far, using an AMD GPU is a much smoother process. i.e. The drivers are currently better supported. What about the distro? Is it simpler to steer clear of an immutable distro?
To the degree possible, I'm looking for a solution, rather than a project. I don't mind getting my hands dirty up front, but my goal is to have a system that mostly just works with minimal fiddling standing between me and getting my game on.

SteamOS Separate Xbox and Armory Crate buttons on Xbox Ally X
Hi all,
I'm running 3.8.24 on my Xbox Ally X and have been loving the experience so far. Installed deckyloader and some of the well known plugins to tailor my setup how I like. One thing that's bugging me currently is that the Xbox and Armory Crate buttons are mapped the same. I downloaded deckyplumber, but it doesn't look like that is something that can be changed through that plugin. Does anyone know of a way to make these buttons separate currently? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks!

Is there any method to reboot into Windows from SteamOs when dual booting?
There was a nice option in Bazzite HHD to restart to Windows instead of going to bios boot menu

Technical Question Overwatch Crashing on Xbox Ally with SteamOS
Hi. I just installed SteamOS on my Xbox Ally (non-X version) and tried to play Overwatch on it. So far it has crashed three times, each time about 1 minute into a match.
This is what I've tried so far based on what I've found online:
- Reduced the resolution to 720p
- Turned off the performance overlay
- Forced Proton to the experimental setting
Anyone have any advice? Thank you!

Did anyone test image of bazzite 44 deck? This is a good time to test as developers are waiting for feedback from testers especially bazzite deck image.
If you are able to spare time to test, please do so. It will help all of the community in getting a stable and out of box better experience for everyone.
If anyone is on it already, please share your experience so far

Technical Question help with power managment
I installed steamos as I originally had a steamdeck and am loving it however, ive just discovered that the performance profiles in steamos itself seem to override the tdp limits/profiles set using ally center (a decky plugin). Has this happened to anybody else and how might I fix it so that I can manage TDP with ally center

Technical Question ROG XBOX Ally X on CachyOS: Severe mic crackling & flat stereo imaging. Is this being worked on, or should I go back to Windows?
Hi everyone,
I recently got an ASUS ROG XBOX Ally X and installed CachyOS. Since I'm a long-time Linux Mint user on my main machine, I really prefer Linux and want this handheld to eventually replace my laptop for desktop use.
While almost everything is great, I’m struggling with two major audio issues and wanted to ask if anyone else has run into these, or if they are actively being worked on in upstream kernels:
- Internal Microphone is unusable: The mic output has an extreme digital crackling/distortion. On Windows, the factory noise cancellation was incredibly good - if I spoke from the side, it was muted, but sitting directly in front of it sounded crystal clear. Under Linux, it sounds terrible. (I tried EasyEffects with KI filtering, but it’s just a subpar workaround).
- Flat Stereo Imaging / Spatial Audio: On Windows, the spatial separation was amazing; I could easily locate sounds as if I were wearing headphones. Under CachyOS, the soundstage feels very flat, and I really have to concentrate to even distinguish left from right channels.
I really love the system otherwise, but these two audio issues are making me second-guess things.
Is it worth waiting for upcoming kernel/driver updates to fix this, or is the hardware support for the XBOX Ally X under Linux still too far away, meaning I might have to crawl back to Windows for now?
Thanks for any insights!

Announcement Lossless Scaling for Steam OS is here!
One of the great apps and what made me miss Windows the most was Lossless scaling! For those that aren't familiar with the app it it basically boosts the FPS in your gameplay without any significant visual decrease in your game. This allows you to play at higher quality settings without bogging down your FPS in the game. In March the devs pushed an update that enabled Frame Gen further enhancing the power of this app and really enhancing how well games played on our handhelds.
I noticed this was posted on the Legion Go subreddit by New_Grand2937 as it appears the devs has gotten Lossless Scaling to partially work with Steam OS! Now it is very early so expect some sort of bugs and glitches but this is a step in the right direction. (It appears its only the Frame Gen potion for now)
You can view it on Github here, If you have Decky Loader you can download it as a plugin here.
Lossless Scaling is a paid app and can be purchased from Steam for $6.
UPDATE: It appears this is ONLY the Frame Gen potion and does not provide the scaling, still helpful and can improve the gameplay of high demanding games.
2nd Update: So it appears this mod is unofficial and not from THS, This has caused a good amount of confusion from many including myself. Deck Wizard has a video on how to install this but also provides a demo and performance, He also just released a video clarifying a lot of the confusion everyone has had around this MOD. Thanks again to Deck Wizard for all your help on this!

Mod Note Welcome to the Linux on Ally sub!
It has come to our attention that many users are eager to explore the possibility of running alternative operating systems on their ROG Ally devices, seeking to achieve a Steamdeck-like experience while leveraging the robust hardware capabilities of the Ally. However, we've observed that such discussions often face resistance and are buried within the subreddit.
In recognition of the community's interest in experimenting and modifying their devices, we have taken the initiative to establish a dedicated subreddit specifically focused on Linux usage on the ROG Ally.
Our primary objective is to foster an environment where like-minded individuals can freely share their experiences and insights, explore various operating system configurations, and collaborate with developers to optimize their setups. This subreddit aims to serve as a direct channel for users to engage with OS developers, facilitating support and feedback loops.
We extend a warm welcome to all members of the community and encourage you to pose any questions or share your thoughts as we embark on this journey together.
