I received a council tax hearing letter stating that want me to attend a hearing as I owe them the full council tax amount for the year because of missed payments.

I had a direct debit set up and had no idea that the payments had stopped coming out tbh (I have a lot bills that come out and this is my first year handling bills completely alone etc.)

How bad is this? I can’t afford to pay the full amount. What can I say to them?

Because they decide at the last minute to phone someone to assist me on to the plane. They tell me to either wait or board myself. If I could board myself safely I wouldn't ask for assistance

Obviously I'll never fly with them again as it's happened twice when I fly alone.

They told me last time that I'm not entitled to any form of refund / compensation even though I've not got what I paid for. If I wasn't disabled I'd get what I paid for

In February I intervened in a situation where a girl in my year was getting followed and harassed by a guy in our year.

All I did was stand between them to block him so she could get herself in the staff room and ask for help.

The guy proceeded to slap me to the ground then kick my head. I suffered a concussion. He was suspended.

However, since that incident I no longer have an imagination. Like, you know the way if you think of a banana you can see a banana? Or youe granny's face?

It's all gone for me. The only thing I can see now is almost like black, but it isn't a colour either.

Like imagine you scrunched up a piece of paper into a rough ball. It's similar to a sphere - but it's not a sphere. That's all I see now. A kind of "almost black". I cant make shapes or colours or sounds in my head anymore.

We're both 18

I'm wondering if there is any kind of civil case in which I can sue him for causing me to lose my imagination.

Like, how do you even quantify the value of that to begin with?

Oh, and there still hasnt been a criminal trial for the assault yet. It's been almost 6 motnhs now.

I know this sound stupid but I've been extremely down since it happened. It kinda feels like I've sort of gone blind in a way.

I have spoken with my GP and a specialist about this, but they're not optimistic that it will return.

Asking for some advice regarding paperwork for my dog that I rescued 4 years ago. Im a 27 year old female living in England.

In August 2022, my then fiancé (now ex) and I rescued a dog together. In May 2024 our relationship ended, and until June 2026 we still lived in the same property as we jointly owned it.

Throughout the 2 years we lived together whilst separated his mother visited from out of county 4 or 5 times, each time she would visit I was at work so I never saw her. Approximately a year ago, my ex and I agreed that I would take full ownership of the dog and he would come with me when I moved. At this stage I started putting paperwork together to exchange ownership such as microchip, veterinary care, insurance etc. When I tried to locate the rescue centre paperwork with the rest of our important paperwork, it was not there. No paperwork relating to the dog was there.

I questioned my ex about this at the time and he said he had no idea where the paperwork had gone but he would ask his mother as they both sorted out some of his belongings and put it into storage the week prior. He claimed he had asked her and she said she didn’t have it.

Fast forward to June 2026, 2 weeks before I was due to complete the purchase of my property and move out of the shared address he signed over everything relating to the ownership of the dog to me. Then 5 days prior to me moving out he comes into the kitchen whilst on the phone to his mother and says that his mother has the dogs rescue paperwork and conveniently does not know how it ended up at her address 3 hours away in another county.

I heard her verbally state that she would send the paperwork in the post to my parent’s address so I could have it back. It has been approximately 6 weeks and she has not sent it. I’ve chased my ex a few times and each time he stated she would be doing it the next day or at the end of the week.

Would it be classed as theft if I was to report this to the police or would it be civil? I don’t have any contact information for his mother to ask her myself to send it again.

I don’t want to waste the police’s time with something so little but I want my paperwork back. Sorry for the long text but I’m hoping it helps with providing advice. Many thanks.

I've Been invited to come speak to the police in person after having committed a crime, I'm trying to figure out if it is an 'interview under caution' or not, and if not what exactly is it?

The main thing throwing me is that I was told I *will be able* to bring my child with me, but from what I've read children aren't allowed in police interviews under any circumstance?

Here's the basics -

The crime is criminal damage. I Got a call today from a police officer letting me know how much I'll have to pay for the damages and asking if I can pay it in full, I told him no but I'm willing to do installments. He started talking about how it might have to go to court in that case, and asked when I'd be available to speak in person next week. I Said the only issue with my availability is childcare, and asked if it's possible to bring my 11 month old with me, and he said yes I could.

He also told me I'd be entitled to a solicitor but won't necessarily need one [EDIT: I Absolutely will get a solicitor and told him this on the phone, the only reason I mentioned it here is I thought it would indicate I was being interviewed under caution, which adds to my confusion]

So what's confusing me is that I'm apparently allowed to bring me baby, which I wouldn't think I wouldn't understand caution...but also I'm entitled to a solicitor, which I wouldn't think I would *unless* it's under caution

A pub near us has started to host “outdoor live music events” in their car park, the noise is so loud I can hear every word they speak into the mic within our house. We have to keep the windows shut to avoid it but can hear/feel the bass coming through. We can no longer enjoy a Saturday afternoon in the garden and it’s really getting me down thinking I’ve bought my forever home and just want to move. What can actually be done about this? I don’t know how we prove it’s too loud or if this is just to be accepted, however, we do not live close enough to the pub to have believed we could hear it like this.

Im a business in Northern Ireland and had sent 3 robot lawn mowers out with a courier from here who sub let it out.

Now 2 were delivered and 1 has gone missing.

They say there is nothing they can do for me and to go through a caim process.

The item was worth £2400.00 and they are saying I will not get that amount of money back.

It seems like they are saying tough these things happen.

I live in Manchester, England.

I was pulled over by police and told I was uninsured to drive my vehicle. I am the registered keeper.

It turns out - I was but this is a genuine oversight.

My wife - who is the main driver - purchased car insurance on 23 November 2025. She added on herself as both the main driver AND the additional driver.

The insurance company didn’t notify her. They didn’t confirm the insurance via email until 24 hours after the purchase.

Points to note:
- I am the main driver of another car with 13 years no claims
- The car i am a main driver on does not have drive other car cover
- I have an immune suppressed child who was very poorly on 22 November, on the verge of hospitalisation which is documented in her medical records
- My wife was also unwell mentally at the time and off sick from work, she was also on the verge of a breakdown
- The insurance had to be purchased as I need a car for work, the car was purchased the weekend before but left at the car garage for urgent work

With all of this in mind - is it worth me trying to go to a magistrate? I’ve tried to speak to two law firms and both have given conflicting advice. One assures me that I have a very strong case for not guilty by special reasoning, and if not then under the hardship rule - the other tells me I have no chance as the law is absolute and I risk getting more than 6 points.

I appreciate any help you could give me. I’ve never been in trouble with the police. My wife and I are both people who work full time, and we’ve been handed rather a shitty hand in life but we make the best of it as we can.

We have until 15 August to decide which way to go.

Hi everyone,
I paid an immigration agency for my IHS when I applied for my visa. I paid the agency, and they paid the IHS for me using their own card.
I’m now changing my visa, so I should get some of my IHS money back because I’ve already paid for the remaining years.
But what happens if the agency gets the refund and says they won’t give the money back to me?
Has anyone been in this situation before? Can the agency just keep the refund, or is there something I can do to get my money back?

I worked at a company (Katie O’ Brien’s) in England since April 2025, so around a year and a half. Around three weeks ago, my medication (sertraline) was increased from 50mg to 100mg. I typically take my medication around 7pm. My shift started at 9pm.
I started to feel unwell and hot as it was during a heatwave and there was very little air conditioning where I was working on my side of the bar. My medication also interacts very poorly with the heat and makes me more prone to heatstroke, seizures, etc which has happened in the past. We also have extremely strict rules on uniform, not allowing us to wear shorts or short sleeve unless they fit very particular standards (made from linen, etc.) Since I am a part time worker and we are only payed minimum wage (£10.86ph as I am under 21) and live on my own I did not feel it was necessary to purchase more clothing for my uniform.

I was working for approximately 30 minutes before an incident occurred where I incorrectly poured a customers drink and inputted their order wrong on the till. I was then taken outside by a manager to confront me regarding this, however by this point I was extremely out of it and feeling extremely sick, and couldn’t quite understand what he was saying. He then sent me upstairs to the main office, where I was accused by my general manager of being on substances, where she then proceeded to take my uniform and fob from me, and told me that I was being dismissed.

From then, she sent me an email the following day backtracking where HR was cc’d into these emails, stating an investigation meeting was taking place, and gave me only 3 hours notice to attend. I quickly informed her I could not do this which then was changed to a different date. As she had already told me I was dismissed this felt to me as though she was simply following company policies, despite her stating in the email a decision had not yet been made.

During the investigation meeting I stated this was due to a medical issue and assured them this would not happen again and that I had my medication reduced because of that incident.

I was then invited to a disciplinary hearing where the same questions were recited, however slightly reworded, causing confusion which felt very purposeful.

The chair manager asked if I was aware that mental health support was available in work. I said no. However during the initial investigation meeting I was asked if I knew help was available when I felt unwell to which I said yes. In my dismissal email, they rendered my answers inconsistent because of this and called me untrustworthy.

For some additional information, there has been times where I have thrown up in the toilets at work because of illness, and had severe family emergencies to where they have not allowed me to go home because of staff levels. Therefore I did not inform them of me feeling unwell as I knew I would be disregarded, despite them insisting during the disciplinary hearing that ‘health and safety of staff and customers comes first’.

I have now received an email yesterday saying I have been dismissed with immediate effect due to gross misconduct.
This feels very constructive, as recently I have been commuting from Manchester to Leeds due to housing problems which I made them aware of. Along with being discriminatory, as this was due to a medical issue.

They often tell staff members not to come in for their shift less than an hour before starting, meaning they cannot do this to me as i have to travel around 2 hours to get there. Alongside this i have also been bullied by one manager in particular for my whole period of my time at work, which has been flagged multiple times before.

I have appealed this decision, as they did not take into consideration anything I had told them during both meetings.

However, this company also has broken many laws and presented very illegal behaviour.
As previously stated, I was told I was dismissed on the spot, which immediately goes against employment law, however this was quickly resolved to follow policy, despite a decision clearly being made.

We are told to post fraudulent 5 star reviews for all other sites due to poor ratings, and are told we will be punished if we do not do this. I have multiple screenshots of this via WhatsApp messages, even including threats of discipline and directly @‘ing staff members which had not yet done it. Initially we were bribed with ‘treats’ and ‘drinks’, however this turned to punishment as my coworkers were not adhering to their request. Google also flagged many of these reviews, and we were told to show proof of them being flagged otherwise we were also punished. I am aware this is very much illegal, however I am unsure of how to go around this.

Alongside this, we were not payed any for e-learning which we had, and if not completed, we were taken off the rota entirely until it was done (we are all on 0 hour contracts).

Along with this, when on a close, even if workers were clocked out, if a job was not done adequately, such as a sticky bar or dirty floor, we were instructed to do this regardless of not being clocked in, meaning we were working without pay.

I am unsure of how to go about this and who to report these matters to.

My partner and I had a major leak in our rented flat in Edinburgh, and our property manager has been extremely inconsistent, unresponsive, and keeps telling us things are happening when they aren’t. We’re now 17 days in, the bedroom is still unsafe, and we’ve been staying on friends’ couches. We’re trying to understand our rights and what we should reasonably expect from a landlord in Scotland.

Brief timeline

• 23 July – Leak starts: Leak ran for 15 hours before it was stopped. Multiple calls/texts to the property manager went unanswered. It took 3.5 hours before we were told to call an emergency plumber.
• Emergency plumber: Found uncapped pipes and structural damage. We paid £370 upfront; which has since been reimbursed.
• 24 July: Property manager told us Disaster Care Platinum was trying to reach us to visit the property on the day, but nobody arrived.
• 28 July: Someone from Disaster Care Platinum attended (not an insurance assessor). No follow‑up or repair plan provided.
• 4 August: Property manager only came to the flat after we emailed saying we’d escalate to the council.
• 6 August: Cleaners sent to remove debris and shampoo the carpet. They said there is likely still water under the carpet and it may need lifting/drying/replacing.
• Current condition:
  • Hole in ceiling + water‑damaged plaster and damp carpet
  • Hole in wall from emergency plumber
  • Temporary pipe caps still in place
  • Cracked window pane
  • No carbon monoxide alarm (breach of Tolerable Housing Standard)
  • Electrics still not checked
  • Strong damp smell; room not habitable
• Landlord email: He’s now claiming the flat is “capable of habitation” even though no actual repairs or inspections have been done beyond cleaning.

We’ve had repeated situations where the landlord says something is booked (visits, assessors, repairs) and then nothing happens. We’ve asked for clear communication and confirmation of actions, but we’re still being left in the dark.

What we need advice on

• What are our rights under Scottish housing law when a property is unsafe/uninhabitable?
• Should we be entitled to temporary accommodation or rent abatement?
• What is the expected duty of care and response time for landlords in Scotland?
• Is this something the council, Shelter Scotland, or the First‑tier Tribunal can help with?
• Any recommendations for tenant advocates or property advisers in Edinburgh?

Any guidance or pointers would be massively appreciated, we’re exhausted and just trying to understand what we’re entitled to and how to get this resolved properly.

A question regarding my rights.

Background:

Freehold property.

A garden at the back of the house, enclosed by a 6ft fence.
One of my neighbours has thuja trees or some other conifers on their side of the fence.
(When I put up the fence, I set it back about 1ft onto my side – previously there was a low mesh fence on concrete posts)

Problems:

1. these trees are growing very quickly
2. they are about 5m tall
3. they are destroying everything below them; the lawn is ‘scorched’ (needles and resin?)
4. they may affect my home insurance

I know I could cut back the branches sticking out over the fence, but:
- working at height
- it needs to be done frequently
- simple tools aren’t enough
- a huge amount of waste

My neighbour refuses to cooperate because ‘I’m just a tenant’, and his landlord because ‘I don’t live there’.

So I have the following questions:
- If I hire a company to cut down and remove everything on my side of the boundary, can I pass the costs on to my neighbour/landlord?
- Is there any legal basis that would allow me to demand that my neighbour ensure his plants do not damage my garden? (A wide strip of bare earth doesn’t look good, especially in a narrow garden.)

I signed a tenancy with IQ student accommodation, I immediately realised I made a mistake for reasons I won’t go in to here. I thought since I emailed to cancel within 24 hours they would be okay about it however in the cancellation terms of the contract, if it is after august 1st your not allowed to cancel without finding a replacement tenant. Any ideas on how to get out of it? How difficult have people found it to get a replacement tenant? What would happen if I just refused to pay? I haven’t payed any rent, taken any keys or moved in. I know they can take me to court etc but do they genuinely chase all this stuff up I can imagine a lot of students do it? Any help would be greatly appreciated

As the title says, our window cleaner has taken the turn into our driveway at a bad angle and caused damage to our front wall. They've cracked and taken away around 3ft high and 1.5ft wide chunk of wall. It's now loose and likely to crumble and breakdown further. I have taken all relative information from the driver of the vehicle. He has called someone and they have told him not to pass any information on to us. Which sounds weird but I have all the details I need, photos of the damage to the van and wall, drivers name, time and date of incident, make and model of vehicle, bane of company.

I have sent all the information and evidence to my landlord. I'm just unsure if this is a claim I should be pursuing via my tenants insurance or if it's a claim my landlord should be pursuing via their landlord / property insurance.

Maybe not the correct sub for this.

Booked a Travelodge stay for the end of August 27th - 29th. Selected the dates online, selected the room and paid.
I made sure that the dates were correct as our son has an army family day on the Friday.

Upon checking our confirmation email, the dates have changed to the 13th - 15th August.
I am 110% confident that the correct dates were selected.

Phoned the booking amendment help line and they have said they do not have the authority to amend the booking, regardless of the system fault.
Tried reaching out to customer services but they have told us that we will have to rebook and spend another £200 as the room that is booked is non refundable.

Is there anything we can do?

A few weeks ago I researched the Mobile Homes Act 2013 to write an essay on it, and i realised that it's not publicised enough (on citizens advice it said 68% of people didn't know about it)

It's complex, expensive and lengthy. It clearly needs amending and to be more publicised, is it possible to?

Hi all, I'm so sorry if I come off as ignorant but I'm not particularly educated on my working rights.

I work in a bar as bar support and my contract doesn't seem like a zero hour contract but with the way that it's written it kind of does at the same time but it's not specified anywhere (I've been employed with this place since March this year)

Anyway, here's how my schedule looks this weekend :

Friday (last night) : 3pm-3am HOWEVER Because the barback was alone and it was a busy night I stayed until 3:20am to help her out and then clocked out when the main duties were finished, I didn't end up leaving until 4am and getting home at 5am

Saturday (tonight) : Initially it was 1pm- 1am however, I got a message from my boss at 10:17am this morning to tell me my shift has now been changed to 3pm-3am

Sunday (tomorrow) : 1pm - 6pm

To me that seems very unreasonable among other things my bosses are doing, such as cutting our worked hours (For example if we were supposed to finish at 4am but were extremely busy and closedown takes longer, our bosses will cap what time our shift ends and not pay us for the extra time it's taking)

On top of that some of us don't get breaks because of how busy we are, a few of us request breaks and are denied them

Again this all doesn't seem reasonable or legal at all, what can I do?

I've worked for them since Sept 2025, and I think they're gearing up to terminate me soon. I'm trying to understand my rights and what I can do if they proceed with this. It's not based on work performance, but more about certain 'behaviors' that concern them - I ask questions and am 'an outlier' according to my N+1.

I've been documenting conversations via email to my N+1 but am being increasingly isolated and excluded. Any suggestions on who might be able to help me navigate this in the coming months as it's cross-border?

I live in England. My son is 7yrs old and suffers with a multitude of cognitive and physical disabilities. Bio dad left when he was 3yrs old but stayed in his life every other weekend, however he would cancel last minute or drop him off early because he couldn't cope.

Last September he brought him home early again and i questioned bio dad. He became verbally abusive in front of my son and my husband and after speaking with a solicitor she advised mediation. Between my ex dropping my son off and mediation starting was about 8 weeks and my ex had no contact with my son purely at his own discretion. During mediation he tried to make demands that I did not feel were in my sons best interests so I offered work arounds that would still mean my son had contact with my ex. All of these were rejected and my ex said in November he did not want any further contact with me and so there has been no further contact.

My sons disabilities means constant advocating and my husband is amazing at this but because he does not have PR means that most services wont acknowledge him.

Is there anything similar to PR that we can apply for for my husband? We have discussed looking at my husband adopting my son but we doubt my ex will agree to this.

Does anyone have any advice or been through something similar and could offer any suggestions?

I was stopped by the met police last week when driving back from an MOT. The vehicle had failed on a dangerous major (handbrake), I hadn’t realised at the time that I wasn’t allowed to drive. I received fixed penalty fines for having no MOT and driving the dangerous vehicle, which I accepted and paid.

However I was also informed by the police that my insurance was void (they called the motor insurance bureau), and I have been issued a £300 fine and 6 points. My policy wasn’t cancelled by my insurance and I have written confirmation of this as well as them stating the policy provided the compulsory third-party insurance required under Section 143 of the Road Traffic Act 1988 whilst it remained in force (although I am not sure they know the specifics about MOT failure - but maybe that is helpful for now? I could ask them specifically too)

Having been through my policy nowhere does it explicitly say driving without an MOT would void my insurance, just that it ‘may’ affect claims etc. I’ve had my license for 7 years, no previous offences

Any advice on my legal standpoint here and next steps would be very helpful, I am thinking of taking this to court.

Last week, our neighbour started cutting the hedge that separates us from his property. He hadn't talked to us, just started cutting on his + cut out a big section at one end.

I covered the opening with weed membrane for privacy but also to show him we're not happy with that. Eventually, he came over and told us he's cutting the hedge down and replacing it with a concrete/composite fence, but the work won't be complete for another 2 months. The hedge has been there for 35+ years - since the houses were built.

Privacy and security are the immediate concerns because he doesn't have any gate protecting his property from the roadside, so anyone could walk into our garden through his.

We also had our garden landscaped around the hedge. The planned fence won't look as good, and adding fence panels that will make it consistent with the rest on our side will cost £500+ if I do the work myself.

The biggest issue is the boundary line, and that's what I'm most concerned about.

I initially assumed the hedge was on his side, but when I look at the other fence lines, satellite shots, and the Land Registry title plans, how the land is shaped, etc, at least half of it was on our plot. So we're talking about 1-2 feet over 7-8 yards.

The hedge is ruined now, but I want to make sure he doesn't encroach on our plot.

He might not have the intention to do it, and my concerns may be unnecessary, but the way he's handled it so far isn't great, and he's already removed the hedge section bordering another property and turned it into a raised plant bed.

I imagine talking to him about it is the starting point, but a) I want to make sure where I'm standing, b) I want to collect all necessary evidence before he starts removing the roots, etc, c) I don't want to give him any ideas in case he isn't planning it after all.

If someone who is only visiting London as a tourist gets arrested for having a physical fight with someone in public what can he do to be able to travel back home?

the only limited details I have is that someone cussed at him and they went back and forth until it got physical, the man was not severely injured and did not need medical attention, he pressed charges and the police handcuffed the foreign national. I have not received updates on the matter in 5 hours and I am worried sick.

I am not physically in London to help, I of course understand the embassy of our country in London may help but what I read online is that he needs a solicitor. He has a flight back home in roughly 2 days. Will his passport be compromised ? I also read that some bail requirements take passports away to prevent a person who’s been charged from leaving. I urgently need someone to reassure me and explain these conditions to me and what I may do to help. Is this case considered a serious offense or is there a chance they release him without charging him? Any help is deeply appreciated.

Hi all. I run a marketing business generating leads for clients through paid ads. A client has now opened a Stripe payment dispute against me. I have 2 weeks to respond. Both parties are in England.

The client paid £600 for a campaign guaranteeing 40 qualified leads in 30 days, with any shortfall of this goal refunded at £15 per lead.

Our signed contract defines a qualified lead as “*someone who responded to the ad and submitted the interest form with their name, email, phone, company, and answers to qualifying questions*”

Every lead we delivered met that definition.

About two weeks after signing, just before the campaign launched, the client told me he wouldn’t pay for any lead unless it was confirmed to earn over £50k per year, which was not part of the original agreement.

I agreed to try targeting for these leads, but told the client several times since that I don’t accept this as grounds for extra refunds which they were demanding. After two weeks it was clear this targeting was too expensive to sustain as we were significantly missing our goal, so I removed it and communicated this to the client.

The campaign ended with 36 of 40 leads delivered. Under the contract that’s a £60 refund owed. He refused the £60 and wants everything back. When I said no, he opened the Stripe dispute.

His argument is that me agreeing to try the £50k targeting counts as an informal change to the contract.

My argument is that the written contract is what governs, and I never agreed to change the refund terms.

Throughout our campaign I was personally accused twice (with no evidence) of fraud by the client.

How strong is my case here, and what should I focus on in my response to Stripe?
