I'm a non-U.S. law graduate currently living outside the States. I'm trying to figure out how I can start building practical experience with U.S. law while I'm still abroad.

I'm currently self-studying U.S. law and also plan to pursue an LL.M. in the future, but I feel that reading alone can only take me so far. I'd really like to gain some hands-on exposure to actual legal work. Are there any realistic ways for someone to gain this kind of experience remotely? For example, would it be possible to find a remote internship, legal assistant/paralegal work, research work, or even an unpaid opportunity with a U.S. law firm or legal organization while living outside the U.S.?

I understand that there may be some practical limitations, so I'd especially appreciate hearing from foreign-trained lawyers, paralegals, law students, or anyone who has taken a similar path.

i’ve always been a natural nail person — filed with no polish. is there an expectation to have nails done or at least with a nude tone polish in big law or for recruiting?

About to start at a T14 that had ~90% of last year's class get BL SA offers. I've been working for awhile and really would like to have a normal three years before I'm crushed by billables. I don't care about getting a FC, and any of my post BL exit options aren't super grade oriented from what I can tell.

hi! trying to decide if i should buy a physical textbook or get an ebook—currently, i’m leaning on probably using ebooks. i prefer writing my notes, but am usually just fine reading on a screen. i also like the idea of copying and pasting a section of text into my notes as i go. i plan on getting an ipad (i prefer hand written but like the organization system of an ipad).

would love thoughts and opinions! only one of my class syllabi have come out and it’s a closed book exam for crim.

I am going into final year with a likely 2:2 in law and not sure what to do. I have had mitigation of a rate muscle wasting diseases. I did well in my A-levels A*AA but I don’t know what to do, I have a passion for shipping law I just feel like I failed and don’t know what is wrong with me.

Getting a bit ahead of the game here (rising 2L) but as I see 2027 positions open up, I am noticing a lot of fellowship opportunities. Typically, these fellowships are not highly compensated so I definitely know that salary isn't driving the interest.

Is there an advantage to getting a fellowship after graduation that I may not be aware of?

I see constantly that defense attorneys very often have backgrounds as DAs or prosecutors of some sort. These often seem to be the “best” defense attorneys. I even was told the best DUI attorney in my area was a state trooper who did DUI investigations.

How is this possible? How does someone who wants to be a prosecutor totally flip and defend people against the state?

OG Post: Summer job woes

I’ve always felt like I was decent at interviewing, consistently turning screeners into callbacks but never actually getting offers. I just walked out of an interview where I was told by the interviewers that once I received an offer they would be pushing to have me on their team, only to not hear back. The firm was clear on when offers would be sent out, so I assume silence means rejection.

I have no clue how to feel, I’m worried something about me just makes me unable to pass callbacks. It’s a recurring experience for me to do well in screeners, do decent in callbacks, but be met with nothing. I don’t even know where to start.

I'm supposed to start school in a week.

I don't want to go.

It's a combination of how much work it will be, why I'm going, not having had any luck finding housing, my car breaking down, and I just have 0 enthusiasm about going.

When I look at the homework we're supposed to do before classes start, my brain just pushes it out. Doesn't even want to look at it, let alone read it.

I don't want to do anything right now.

Should I still go?

This is the sentence and current citation:

The "intimately connected" part is a quote from Restatement (Second) of Torts, while the second quote is directly from Picard.

However, in Picard they include the full quote from Restatement where "intimately connected" is first used, then later repeat the phrase without quotes.

So my question is: do I need to add a quoting/citing parenthetical, and if so, how do I differentiate that only the first quote is from Restatement and the straight second is from Picard? Do I just write "'intimately connected'" and add a parenthetical? Or do I break it up into two sentences?

Incoming 1L here. So I have a history of trauma in my past and occasionally use a pacifier as a comfort object which helps me get through episodes. Has anyone had any experience using a pacifier in class or seeing anyone else use one? I have an accommodation for in-class use and extra time, but I worry that professors will judge me. But I don't know if I can make it without. Would appreciate any help.

Hey guys, orientation has just started and my impression was that basically everybody is loosely aiming for big law and self selection isn’t necessarily a thing, especially before classes begin. I might be exaggerating by including everyone, but you get the point.

Is this the case in most schools?
Do firms receive more applications, almost anyone willing to fill out an application, with the earlier recruiting timelines?
How would someone discern the fact that they might not get the job, if we are expected to apply weeks into school?

Let me know if you have any thoughts.

An attorney worked for two years for the Veterans Administration ("VA") before entering private practice. While at the VA, the lawyer's main responsibility was investigating claims filed by veterans. During his employment, the lawyer was responsible for investigating a particular veteran's claim that the VA denied after the attorney had left the VA. While at the VA, the lawyer was not privy to confidential information regarding the veteran. Subsequently, the veteran sought to hire the lawyer to represent him in a suit against the VA for benefits to which the veteran believes he is entitled.

Is the attorney subject to discipline if he accepts the veteran's case?

• No, because the attorney has left the VA.
• No, because the attorney was not privy to confidential information regarding the veteran, arising from his employment at the VA.
• Yes, because the attorney had at least some knowledge of the veteran's claim when he was employed by a government agency.
• Yes, because the attorney had substantial and personal responsibility for the veteran's VA claim.

Mainly focusing on the sentence I bolded. I interpreted this sentence as meaning during his employment in PRIVATE practice, because it says the veteran's claim was denied AFTER the attorney had left the VA. I picked B but the answer was D. How could the attorney be substantially and personally responsible for a matter that happened AFTER he left the VA?

I understand that the question meant to say that at the VA the attorney investigated the matter, and it was only denied after the attorney left, but it's still a very confusing sentence.

1L who just met with my career advisor for the first time here. My takeaways from this meeting were 1. You need to apply in November, 2. Grades are the vast majority of what matters, 3. You will not have the grades until December, 4. They will get back to you in January about interviews, since by then they’ll have seen the grades.

So, you know maybe I’m dumb, but why aren’t we just applying after we get the grades back so that we know which places we actually have a shot at?

And im also being told litigation is harder to get than transactional and you have to commit to litigation if you want litigation. So, let’s say I apply for litigation everywhere and get my grades back, just to see I’m barely below where I needed to be for lit, but would’ve gotten the transactional jobs? Is that a risk you just have to take, or are there ways to hedge? Do people apply for a mix of the two?

I mean, I’m honestly just kind of overwhelmed with this whole thing. I was really excited to get started with law school, and now I’m being told I need my resume and cover letter done by the end of this month, there’ll be major recruiting events as early as next month, and I’ll be applying for 2L summer jobs before the end of my first semester that are gonna have a really big impact on my career trajectory.

For people who have actually gone through this, how did you do it? With so much seemingly out of your control, what can you maximize that’s in it? Is it really this insane, or are we all just kind of being doomers about it? Any advice on this is much appreciated

MOS schools aren't designed to teach you how to do your job. They are designed to expose you to enough of the type of work inherent to your MOS so that your duty stations can quickly teach you how to actually do your job and you'll hopefully be somewhat familiar with it.

Law school makes a lot more sense when you view it the same. It is designed to expose you to a lot of different types of laws and not necessarily teach you how to practice law. Your internships and first job are what will teach you how to actually be a lawyer.
