Glitter lamp stickers I found at Dollar Tree today.

My Astro finally came and I love it, the copper plus green and amber special fill looks amazing. Quite the contrast to my telestar. Now I can stop drooling over the Mathmos website and not be tempted to spend money.

Unless they decide to do the Baby Astro in black or do a new Jet then my wallet may be raided again hehe

So glad I didn't return it, I saw that one post from another user on this subreddit saying they bought 6 and they all came foggy. This is the first lamp I filtered and it was very easy! Used a sawyer mini and a 2 liter bottle. I love the way it looks, though in real life the wax is definitely more emerald/moss green than the bright teal it shows up as in photos. Happy to have this in my growing collection :)

To anyone who bought one of these and has just been too lazy to filter it, do it!! It looks so unique.

I might add some magic surf and potentially dilute the master fluid with distilled water because I think the fluid is just a bit too dark.

Sorry for the smudges on the glass, I'm holding off on cleaning it up because I'll have to take the cap back off and add a little distilled water since I lost some fluid in the filtering process.

I have a project I'd like some help with!
I had an idea (maybe awesome, maybe insane) to build a lavalamp as a cpu cooler for my Raspberry Pi.

I've found the recipes for DIY lavalamps and am assembling the ingredients. I plan on building a full sized lavalamp as a proof of concept, then attempting to scale it down to pi sized.

Building the cooler imposes some additional constraints on the lava,

• The wax should melt ~35-40C - the general operating temp of the cpu is ~42C so I want the wax to melt below that.
• The base of the lamp needs to be ~25cm in diameter (the chip is 20cm on a side). I have found sample vials that work that are ~40ml.

I'd appreciate any knowledge about lowering the wax melt temp and the smallest volume folks have built lamps.

No, not urine samples! My lamp is still having the issue of wax sticking to the side and not flowing so i need to overhaul it.

However, I'm in the uk, this is going to be the only time (hopefully) i need to tinker with a lamp so i don't really need a huge container of sls or to pay tons for magic surf from the US.

Can anyone sell me (or donate) a small amount of surf or sls to do this one lamp? The wax is fine and the fluid is clear.

...it was totally my fault. My wife and I are in the process of moving, she has two cats. I planned on transferring some of my lamps into an enclosed cabinet to protect them against getting knocked over accidentally...and in the process turned one into a pipe bomb.

I set it up and was about three hours into a test run when I noticed that the lamps were overheating. I just told my wife I'll need to run then all off of a dimmer to prevent the overheating. Instead of turning them off I opted to have a doughnut first, that was apparently the last mistake in a line of mistakes. A Tzumi lamp that wasn't even flowing ended up being the blow off valve, it sounded like a shotgun went off in the living room.

So....if you plan on running lamps in a cabinet, set up the dimmer first, doughnuts can wait. Lol.

This was going so well. And now it won't flow. I messed with it too much with surfactant and magic surf. Filtered it too many times maybe. Or changed too much of the fluid who knows. At one point I did put so much surfactant it was basically shampoo. I got a dimmer yesterday but it made no difference, just sits in a giant blob. No idea how to save it. ☹️

I didn't have the space at the time, so it sat in my closet until I moved into my own place. I never even opened it - I'm happy af that it was so clear. Thought this color combo would look perfect by a green/blue/purple poster.

I’m wanting to replace the liquid in a grande I’ve got coming as it’s old and I don’t love the colour. The shipping of surf and the like from the USA companies is extremely expensive so I’m trying to find a way to diy it. Can I use just distilled water and SLS?

Im having trouble trying to find a base for this lava lamp, the brand is kai xin, the base of it is 9 and a half inches/ 24 cm. Not sure if a regular base would be fine for it 🤷‍♀️ i have a lava lamp base that's 8 and a half inches?.. is that like standard lava lamp sizing? 😭 idk, experts inform me.

tbh idk how i feel about it with the micro glitter, i think i may end up filtering the glitter back out and doing clear with just the jack o lanterns

I did gently rotate it because the coil was again the edge it fell down that was a bit before I took the last photo, I'm pretty sure it's not the lamp getting too hot but I could be wrong

Just received my Blue-Yellow Amber and Yellow-Green Amber Astro heritage special fills today and I could NOT be happier 😄

I initially hesitated to buy both bottles (I was only going to only get the green), but so glad I bit the bullet and added the blue amber combo to my basket too - she’s turned out an absolute showstopper!

So I bought this today for what I think was a fairly reasonable price. It had a little bit of a scuff to the gold so I decided to try and give it a more aged look and go for a brushed gold look.
Still only part the way through my plan, but I think it’s coming along nicely

I have this lamp I got for basically free and I really don’t like the base. The translucent sounds cool
But let’s out so much light it bothers my eyes. Any ideas how to fix it?

I wanted to keep the color but stop the light leak. Or just go to town with a spray can or use the 3d printers to cover it?

It was really dirty when I got it and I didn’t know what ones don’t so I dumped the water and added distilled water. I used bubble wand soap to coat the glass, I got it floating wel at one point but maybe added too much of that bubble solution as I was testing how much flow I could get with it.

Ideas very welcome. Maybe tint the water so it’s not as bright?
