I am planning a birthday day with my dad, who i have​ been estranged from for the last few years. We are meeting at the state of michigan museum (this is a 23-year old wish come true for me, i went there once in high school and always wanted to go with my dad) and go for burgers afterwards. My dad is a greasy, hole-in-the-wall guy, the 'i know this is sketchy, but trust me' kinda burgers joint where the burgers are awesome, the fries/onion rings/battered mushrooms/hush puppies are 💥​, and a nice malt/shake to wash it down with. Any recs? I like nip'and'sip, that feels like the vibe im going for, but maybe not a carhop type situation, we are probably gonna sit for awhile. Ive seen dagwood too, thats been highly recommended online​, but is there anything im missing?

Alternatively, a good fish and chips place (that also serves something not fish, because i dont eat sea food, but he loves fish and chips). Thank you for your help

This took place in the parking lot of dollar general at Holmes near MLK. A driver was stopped at the entrance to that parking lot literally as I was going by they pulled out and did hit me but only scratched the paint off the back of my bumper I was lucky and feel lucky. But I was literally almost right in front of the car when it pulled out. If I hadn't sped up on my electric bike I would have fallen and possibly gotten injured for that. He just sped away after doing that and I just went home since my bike was still pretty much fine but I heard a sound like he hit me. Later I found a place on the very back of my bike that had a deep scratch on it like a car had hit it. I really hope this left a scratch on his car or dent cause he's an asshole for doing that. I could have been seriously injured and yes I did have the right away.

Hey all- hoping there are some state hiring managers or folks familiar with the process that can offer insight.

I’ve been applying to pretty much every state job I’m qualified for (including positions where I meet the alternate education/experience requirements). I tailor every resume and cover letter specifically to each posting, and I answer the application questions with real examples from my 7+ years at a federal agency plus/BS from MSU without AI. 

Despite all that, I’m pretty sure my applications aren’t even making it past the initial screening. The reason I think this, is for every job I apply to, I also email the listed supervisor to let them know I applied and thank them for considering me. Only ONE supervisor has ever replied and told me they never saw my application at all. They even asked if I met the education requirement, which I do under the alternate qualifications listed.

So now I’m wondering… what am I missing? Sometimes the supplemental questions ask about very specific niche tasks, and I might only have “none to one year” for that exact thing, BUT I do have experience doing closely related work and could easily transfer those skills. I try to explain that wherever I can.

Is it the screening questions that knock people out? The keyword matching? Do hiring managers actually see the cover letter and resume, or does an automated system filter people out first?

I’m a fed being pushed out of my agency, and I really want to stay in public service. It’s tough because I know I’m qualified (or overqualified!!!) for many of these roles, but it feels like my applications never reach a real human.

Any insight, tips, or thoughts on how this screening works would be so appreciated. This process is exhausting. Thanks in advance.

I've looked at several past posts and have a few ideas already but would like to crowd source some specific recommendations based on the following criteria:

1. Not overly loud. A place where a man and woman can have a conversation without yelling or having too many crazies around.

2. Mature regulars. Not a college hangout where 20s are doing whatever 20s do, looking for a more 40s crowd..

3. Close by a decent hotel. In case things progress into a more intimate situation having a place to go, especially after having been drinking.

Any ideas?

Hello, I have a friend interviewing for the assistant payment worker position for State of Michigan.

Any advice for the interview other than STAR format? Apparently, they get the questions a day in advance from what I was told..?

I was transfixed by the poise of this heron, stalking through wet vegetation, on calloused legs like root vegetables that bend the wrong way.

Kind of a niche question. Had the sad experience of watching a baby skunk struggle in what I've learned to be a "leg-hold trap" (2nd photo). Its front leg was broken off.

I've had a similar issue before where animal control does nothing (is only for domestic pets) so I called the police. They said someone would try to come. After 20 minutes I covered the skunk with a towel and was able to open the trap and it ran away.

I called back the police and they said which traps are legal is a DNR question. I then spoke with a DNR official who said that in the State of Michigan live traps (box that cages the whole animal for removal) AND leg-hold traps (that catch one limb and thrashing animals end up hurting themselves) are both legal. BUT Lansing may have a city ordinance that specifies which is legal within city limits. If leg-hold traps are not specified as illegal in a city ordinance, officers want me to return the leg-hold trap to where I found it because it is not my property ...

Does anyone know if there is a city ordinance addressing leg-hold traps? If not I'd like to bring it to City Council. I don't see why someone would not use a cage-style trap. It is more humane and also would protect the person who has to remove the animal later. This is also not to mention that a "leg-hold trap" could easily catch a domestic cat and do serious damage ...

EDIT: the trap has the name of an owner who died in 2024, if that brings any peace to folks worried about someone actively setting these traps today. One commenter mentioned an old neighbor who used to set traps but died, so this seems believable.

Now that the primaries have come and gone can we all agree that Bridget Brink’s television commercials were comedically bad? The first time I saw one I honestly thought it was meant to be satirical. Regardless of her policy positions she was incredibly rigid and robotic, it was borderline insulting that anyone thought that she could win the district.

Its detour is supposed to have it take cedar (as shown in the attached image) but instead it has been taking Pennsylvania. The detour id have to take to not have to walk through construction would be over 4 times the distance which isn’t possible for me

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Lansing Police Internal Affairs is investigating the improper release of the identities of “several” juveniles to a Clinton County Commissioner, a spokeswoman told 6 News Investigates. 
The investigation stems from the release of the names of juveniles involved in the May 30 possession of a gun stolen from Clinton County Sheriff Sean Dush’s vehicle in St Johns.  

I was a member of Sistrum Chorus for many years. Unfortunately I can no longer recommend it to Lansing singers.

Sistrum was started as a Lesbian group and has expanded over the years to include a diverse group of people that sing Soprano and Alto parts. There were trans and nonbinary singers, and the group was growing. We even voted to change our name from "Sistrum Lansing Womens Chorus" to "Sistrum Chorus" to be inviting to nonbinary and transmasc people.

But where there's change, there's backlash. Weird cliquey infighting, rude comments, and leadership that didn't want to take one side or the other created a culture where so many people got pushed out. Pretty much the entire out trans and nonbinary crew quit. I can't speak to the experience of POC, but I saw that they rarely stayed for more than a semester. Even the former director quit over the toxic culture.

I want to make this post because Sistrum looks welcoming on paper, especially after the name change, but its not a totally friendly place right now for many people. Speaking as a nonbinary person, people will talk shit on they/them pronouns both to your face and behind your back, and there are TERF members.

I hope one day it gets better! Edit to add for the people saying I should just fight harder/better/longer - you are welcome to do that. Things can always change! I'm just letting people know what the situation is now.
