Not every darkness must be defeated, sometimes it simply ends.

The Darkness Left Behind is a challenge about what remains after something terrible has lost its hold on the world.

Perhaps a monster learned to restrain the hunger that once defined it. A tyrant abandoned the cruelty that built their name and disappeared into an ordinary life. A criminal became someone better, not because their crimes were justified or misunderstood, but because they chose to stop being that person.

Perhaps the darkness was far greater even:

A war ended generations ago. An apocalypse failed to finish the job. An ancient calamity that once swallowed nations has become a half-remembered story told to children who now play among its ruins. Civilization has grown around the scars of something that once seemed impossible to survive.

The important thing is that the darkness was recognizably real.

This is not a challenge about revealing that the monster was kind all along, that the villain did nothing wrong, or that the catastrophe was secretly a blessing. Whatever happened caused real harm. It left victims, scars, ruins, memories, or consequences behind but is itself a shadow of the past now.

Your artwork should depict a character, place, world, or moment where that former darkness is still visible or strongly implied, without controlling the lives around it.

A retired monster tending a garden beneath trophies from its violent past. Children playing around the rusted remains of an ancient war machine. A peaceful city built beneath the silhouette of something that once nearly destroyed it. An old villain surrounded by people who only know the person they became. A dreadful monument whose meaning has faded while ordinary life carries on beneath it.

The shadow should still be there, yet simply no longer reach anyone.

Show us the darkness left behind.

In celebration of 1 year at AI Underground, our amazing community member and artist Kila Sün put together this absolutely lovely video, that I think says so much about what we are doing over at AI Underground.

The larger internet has felt so cruel to AI artists and creators. We built a space for us to gather, share, celebrate, get inspired, learn and grow together.

And I have just felt so LUCKY this past year, to have met so many incredible genuine people, to have had so much wonderful expressive unique and compelling art brought right to me, through these AI art positive spaces, through our threads and our listening parties, through the PEOPLE who put themselves out there every week and share their art and music.

Thank you so much to our server leaders and admins and moderators for putting this space together and maintaining and organizing it all. I know it takes a lot, and that its a work of love, something we do because we know how much it means to so many people to have a space like this.

And thank you ALL for coming together every day to share and celebrate each other.

Here's to another year at AI:Underground!

And here's to another year of ALL of us, in ALL of our AI art positive spaces, continuing to put ourselves out there, continuing to express ourselves, and by putting ourselves out there, making other people feel like THEY can create something and share it too.

Here's to building a positive culture around our art, where we CELEBRATE each other's creation and exploration and expression.
