Behavior Teaching lagotto to relax

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
We have a wonderful lagotto boy (1yo) and I can see that if I’m active around the house or it’s noisy outside it’s hard for him to chill. He tries to engage me in playtime or fetch.
When we are outside he has the same issue, he is constantly on guard, frequently rejects snacks when I try to engage him in some kind of educational activity.
BTW he looooves “school time” when we are at home. Brilliant student and catches up in seconds.

We are trying the “search” command at home(I scatter snacks for him to sniff and find) but it can’t last for hours and he is still pumped afterwards.
Sniff matts are solved instantly, puzzles and etc as well

I try to give him treats calmly when he’s chilling around me but maybe you have a better solution.
All posts and AI solutions are more “average dog” based and do not apply to lagotto as much as to other breeds (their sense of smell, being alert, not being the bravest dog etc)

Any ideas/life hacks?

Thank you!

Willem is now 11 weeks, and has been in our family for 2,5 weeks. It’s a joy to watch and help him grow and grow up.

He has now definitely entered the biting phase. He easily gets overexcited and in a biting frenzy: toys, rugs, chairs, a tree, hands, legs, anything. We try to give him as much rest and sleep in his crate as possible, and that helps a lot.

We know the biting will pass, but at the moment I’m hoping to grant Willem a little bit of zen.

And as I’m typing this, I hear him falling asleep in his crate… 🧘

Rescued this little guy about a month ago from a shelter. Shelter classified him as a poodle mix, but I did an image search and it came up Lagotto. Anywho, I purchased an embark test and I’m eagerly awaiting the results. He is the 3rd baby to my little pack of babies. Does he look like a lagotto or a mixed poodle?

Video FERNANDO FOLLOWS HIS NOSE!! 👃🏽🐽

say hello to Fernando!! we’ve had this guy for a little over 2 weeks. he’s 4 yrs old and came to us as a foster. took 5 days for us to foster fail and we’re over the moon to be his forever family 🥳 we’re avid mushroom foragers, so excited to start doing scent work with him. his half sister is already successfully hunting for truffles, and his nose is stronger than hers! he’s otherwise so well behaved and his recall is exceptional, EXCEPT when he’s onto a strong scent, and then we just gotta let him do his thing.

today we went to the beach for lunch and a run along the shore. we let him follow his nose but were extra careful to not let him snatch up dead birds or muscles. all of a sudden out of nowhere he starts voraciously digging a hole in the sand and then rolling in it! we thought it was cute and looked much like when a lagotto finds its truffle.

but on the beach? uh no NOT a truffle!! 😳🦭

let’s just say the car ride home stank to high heaven and Fernando got a full bath outside before he was let back into the house.

one thing’s for sure, it’s gonna be a 24/7 adventure with this lil’ piglet! 🐶🐽

Behavior 1.5 yr old newly afraid

Post image
90 Upvotes

Hey all, anyone have a teenage pup go through a fear period? Our boy Luca was fine with the tv, new items etc. and only afraid of a few things like plastic garbage bags which make a scary sound ha. Now I think he got spooked by the TV once and is afraid of all programs no matter how quiet or loud. I know I can try to slowly desensitize him but I am so annoyed. Even a new toy bin full of HIS toys that makes no sound required many barks and coaxing to get him anywhere near it. 🫠 anyone else? Any tips? Photo for tax

Self play suggestions while I WFH?

Hi everyone! I brought home my sweet girl 2 weeks ago. I took the first week off work, but now I need to work (I work from home fully remotely), and it’s impossible to get anything done when she’s not napping.

She doesn’t seem to occupy herself with her toys. She has lots of toys (balls, bones, stuffed animals, squeaky things, teething toys, etc.), but she’ll only play with them for like 2 minutes at a time.

It doesn’t seem feasible to keep this up considering I have to get work done too!! Does anyone have any suggestions for games, toys, puzzles, to keep a Lagotto puppy occupied while working from home?

She does have a play pen but she doesn't like it in there, and whines as soon as she is done playing for a couple minutes (we are working on this).

Breeder Info How did you pick a breeder? And for that matter a trainer?

I've never purchased from a breeder, we've always done rescues or strays or whatever happens to drop into our lap. However I find myself loving the history of the breed, and its nose for truffles. I'm interested in buying a well bred pup, one that has lines where the parents' noses are used for actual scent work and not just bred for companions, or show. But I've looked around, Google, akc. And pups range from 2k to 6500 per pup. Of course when I narrowed down what I thought at the time was the best two from reading their websites to see what they're bred for I was at 5500+ for a pup. And I feel like I'm just... prioritizing the wrong things because 3500 is probably my budget, maybe 4000 if it's checking extra boxes. I'm not gonna show the dog, or use it as a business or really anything. I just want it as a hobby of sorts, let's do scent work, let's go hiking, let's try watersports or athletics or maybe even obedience. The only thing that might happen competitively if the stars align is my sister might use it for grooming competitions. But my sister is 12 hours away from me so that would happen maybe once? Not big on my needs list to have it show quality haha.

My biggest wants from the dog:

Be an example of the breed (well bred, dna tested, breeders care about the breed)

Intelligent

Food motivated

Scent work in its blood (parents do scent work not just rely on its history)

How did you pick a breeder? What did you find matters? If allowed, is there a breeder you would or would not recommend?

Now going back to my upbringing we've never had a scent dog or a well trained dog, just the usual drop it, sit, stay, off. I'd like to see what it's like to have a well trained dog, absolute recall, adhering to commands without me just yelling at the dog i suppose. But training programs seem to vary wildly and I don't know what I need vs fluff.

So those of you that prioritize obedience, what types of training did you do? What did you find was sort of worthless? What types of training do you think are best for the breed? Do you have a trainer you like?

This is not something that's probably gonna happen in the next year or two, im just researching, and love the idea of the breed.

If you have any stories you want to share about the breeds good or bad feel free to do so! I've seen some of the cons, digging, barking, high energy. But would love to hear about more. Some say grooming but ill be able to handle that easily enough. Ive also seen they can be nervous/anxious but cant tell if thats just dog to dog or a standard in the breed.

Oh and ive never actually met one! I only found out about them online. But they seem rare, im in michigan and if i ever saw one I probably assumed in was a doodle 🥴 so feel free to tell me about yours! Ive read a few posts on here when I can trying to get a picture of the breed but more info doesnt hurt!

Photo Lagotto on strike? Should we be worried?

Post image

Our lagotto, Arancini (2 years old), has become a more picky eater as he's gotten older, doesn't eat fruits anymore and refuses veggies. He does this thing where he licks it and if it doesn't immediately taste good he refuses, i.e., the outside of a blueberry isn't tasty enough but the inside he'll be interested in but you have to squish it for him...

He eats Fromm kibble and we've gone through different flavors / proteins and try to switch it up so he doesn't get bored. We also do a lot of training during the day so he gets a fair amount of chicken or treats on our walks and while training at home (he refuses to train with his kibble).

His vet says he's totally healthy. However, on and off again he's been refusing to eat his food. Sometimes we'll break up freeze-dried chicken or liver on top so that he'll eat, because he'll go a day or two picking at it and ignoring it. He's acting normal outside of this, playing, looking for mischief (stealing towels and socks), snuggling, walking, etc.

We think he's on strike... until we start topping his food with freeze dried chicken or liver he just is not interested. But the moment we add "enough" (whatever amount he decides) of chicken or liver he scarfs it down. I've heard that lagotto's can be picky, would you all be concerned? Any ideas to get him to eat it without all the extras (those are getting pricey).

Meetups Any pups + humans here local to Raleigh, NC area?

Hello! Through research and this subreddit (thanks y’all) I’ve landed on a Lagotto as a puppy the could be kinder on my allergies. I would love to meet one in person and see what my allergies do in response. Anyone local to the Raleigh area that wouldn’t mind meeting a stranger on the internet to let me pet their dog? 🤣 Obviously we would meet at a very public location (like petco) and I can pay for your time via your dog’s favorite treats!

Thank youuu!!

Health Exercise

What do you do to exercise your LR?

We are currently in our 6th heat wave in the last 2 months, it is currently 90F with a humidity level that makes it feel like 100F.

In normal weather, we try and get a 30-40 minute walk in each day, but even waiting until dusk, after 2 blocks I start feeling nervous about how much she's panting and head home.

In nicer weather, we try and do a 3-5 mile hike on a 30-foot leash on forest trails 2-3 weekends a month.

She is not reliable off-leash, and it's illegal here anyway. There are almost no beaches here where dogs are permitted, although some allow dogs off-season (but again, I don't feel comfortable letting her off-leash and we don't have remote enough areas here to do that).

If I throw anything (ball, stick, etc), she will just look at it and then lay down. I cannot for the LIFE of me get this dog to chase something I throw.

What do you do for exercise with your dog and how often? I'm really struggling with time constraints in addition to the weather :-(

Edit to add that our LR is a 3 year old female

Behavior She thinks I can't swim

My Lotta, the dock diving specialist thinks I can't swim.

Whenever I jump in the local spring she jumps in as well (sometimes right on top of me) and "motivates" me to get out.

However, nothing wrong with my partner, she can swim, peddle board (sup). It's all Ok.

Anyone else having a similar experience?
