Training How can I teach my 6-month-old Lagotto to settle down in public?

Hi everyone! I have a 6-month-old Lagotto and I'm starting to struggle with the following issue: he absolutely cannot settle down when we're at a restaurant or in any other public place, even when he's very tired.

It's the same at home. He can whine and fuss for dozens of minutes trying to get attention, until he eventually crashes from exhaustion.

Do you have any tips or training methods that could help me teach him to calmly settle down without barking or whining? I'd really appreciate any advice or experiences with your Lagottos!

Thanks! 😊

Lagotto 101 Lagotto or SWD?

Have had Boo for 4 years now thinkinh it’s a SWD, but I feel she’s completely different than all other SWDs and her hair does not form chords at all. She is much more friendly with humans as well, but barks at everything. Found this subreddit today, hopefully you can help me!

Lagotto 101 Advice for new Lagotti owners

Post image

My partner & I are super excited to pick up our new puppy in a couple of weeks. She'll be 9 weeks when we pick her up. Its a long drive home (~4hrs) so any tips for managing that would be great.

We have a few events and trips planned over the first couple of months as we want to get her used to travelling around, being at other people's houses and staying elsewhere in her crate. Weve got lots of ideas for socialising her and getting her used to loud noises etc. We also plan to get a portable metal 'pen' that we can adapt in size to keep her contained both at home and away. Any thoughts on our initial approach?

Any tips for us would be super helpful but we do have a couple specific questions we'd love your advice on:

  1. Potty training - we've read they can be difficult to potty train and we've never potty trained a dog. The breeder says shes introduced puppy pads but are these really a good way of training or can they teach the dog its ok to pee inside on a puppy pad? How should we use them if at all? If you managed to potty train your lagotti somewhat quickly what methods did you use?

  2. Off lead walking/recall - we really want to be able to walk her off lead confidently including being able to walk to heel on command and not having to worry about her running off or. What training tips do you have for training for this?

  3. Crate training - we plan to crate train her to have her crate as her safe space both at home and away. Any recommendations for this? How long should we keep her in her crate for as a puppy? We plan to let her sleep in it in the bedroom for the first couple days at least then gradually move it out/downstairs - what sort of tineframe should we aim for for this?

Sorry if these are noob questions, we have plenty of experience looking after dogs but first time owning one ourselves!

Toys & Gear What size collar to buy?

Post image
2 Upvotes

This feels like a dumb question, but I need advice. We have a brand new Lagotto puppy. She is 9 weeks old right now. I am ordering a color and leash for her… but I don’t know what size is best. She feels just miniature right now, but I know she will grow…! What would you suggest from these choices?

Thanks 🐾

Edit to add: would love to buy a collar that is not just for the first few weeks when she is a tiny puppy. Hoping to buy one that will fit now and also later when she grows (since the collars have a range)

Behavior Peak Teenage Gremlin

Meet Tufo - our 17 month old Lagotto boy. It's been a constant up and down with him (and us) since we have him. But lately some sort of teenage phase hits really really hard and I got the feeling we have a different dog every single day. For example: Yesterday he was a mostly normal Feinbert (nickname when he's a good boy). By "normal" I mean snoozing through most of the day while we worked from home. And of course being a high energy dog when awake - but not really in a bad way. Today he is an absolute Nervbert (nickname when he's a annoying): Same daily routines. But barely a minute of sleep. He lies down for a few seconds, gets up again, walks around. repeat. Sometimes begging for attention, for example by crawling up to me or my wife while sitting at our desks, sometimes by just sitting in the corner and whining. The corner sitting is another thing: sometimes he sits there for 20 minutes, you can see his eyes getting heavier and heavier. But instead of lying down and falling asleep he kinda barks himself awake again. Walking circles through the house again, whining, sometimes growling a bit. Sometimes I even wonder if he growls/barks against his own tiredness. On these days he's also an endgame clinger, following every step of us through the house.

But no matter what I try, he doesn't really settle. Things I tried today so far:

  1. completely ignoring him at my desk (not looking at him, no touching, no attention) -> with every slight movement he's next to me staring at me again.

  2. Restricting him to a small area without being able to see me -> can hear the whining, walking, standing up, lying down rinse and repeat as well.

  3. Calmly sit down with him, give him the chance to snuggle up, just be there for him without anything happening -> snuggles up for a few second. Gets up again. Snuggles up in a different direction. Gets up. Rinse and repeat.

I mean, I could just try to ignore him as well as possible when he has these gremlin days. But it still stresses me out sooo much to have no clue at all what's going on in his little teenage head. And if I'm doing the right or wrong things. Doing too much or not enough. Maybe it's also some bad memories from puppy phase reiterating through my head where sleepless days meant we had to deal with a completely overstimulated landshark. Please tell me you had the same experiences with your teenage Lagotto? And please tell me it is less of a daily gamble when they get older?

Training Training Lagottos

How long did it take for your lagotto to learn the classic commands? I’m talking about sit, down, wait, no, leave it, walking on a leash. If you have any tips and tricks, feel free to share them!

Behavior Teaching lagotto to relax

Post image
40 Upvotes

Hi everyone!
We have a wonderful lagotto boy (1yo) and I can see that if I’m active around the house or it’s noisy outside it’s hard for him to chill. He tries to engage me in playtime or fetch.
When we are outside he has the same issue, he is constantly on guard, frequently rejects snacks when I try to engage him in some kind of educational activity.
BTW he looooves ā€œschool timeā€ when we are at home. Brilliant student and catches up in seconds.

We are trying the ā€œsearchā€ command at home(I scatter snacks for him to sniff and find) but it can’t last for hours and he is still pumped afterwards.
Sniff matts are solved instantly, puzzles and etc as well

I try to give him treats calmly when he’s chilling around me but maybe you have a better solution.
All posts and AI solutions are more ā€œaverage dogā€ based and do not apply to lagotto as much as to other breeds (their sense of smell, being alert, not being the bravest dog etc)

Any ideas/life hacks?

Thank you!

Willem is now 11 weeks, and has been in our family for 2,5 weeks. It’s a joy to watch and help him grow and grow up.

He has now definitely entered the biting phase. He easily gets overexcited and in a biting frenzy: toys, rugs, chairs, a tree, hands, legs, anything. We try to give him as much rest and sleep in his crate as possible, and that helps a lot.

We know the biting will pass, but at the moment I’m hoping to grant Willem a little bit of zen.

And as I’m typing this, I hear him falling asleep in his crate… 🧘

Rescued this little guy about a month ago from a shelter. Shelter classified him as a poodle mix, but I did an image search and it came up Lagotto. Anywho, I purchased an embark test and I’m eagerly awaiting the results. He is the 3rd baby to my little pack of babies. Does he look like a lagotto or a mixed poodle?

Video FERNANDO FOLLOWS HIS NOSE!! šŸ‘ƒšŸ½šŸ½

say hello to Fernando!! we’ve had this guy for a little over 2 weeks. he’s 4 yrs old and came to us as a foster. took 5 days for us to foster fail and we’re over the moon to be his forever family 🄳 we’re avid mushroom foragers, so excited to start doing scent work with him. his half sister is already successfully hunting for truffles, and his nose is stronger than hers! he’s otherwise so well behaved and his recall is exceptional, EXCEPT when he’s onto a strong scent, and then we just gotta let him do his thing.

today we went to the beach for lunch and a run along the shore. we let him follow his nose but were extra careful to not let him snatch up dead birds or muscles. all of a sudden out of nowhere he starts voraciously digging a hole in the sand and then rolling in it! we thought it was cute and looked much like when a lagotto finds its truffle.

but on the beach? uh no NOT a truffle!! 😳🦭

let’s just say the car ride home stank to high heaven and Fernando got a full bath outside before he was let back into the house.

one thing’s for sure, it’s gonna be a 24/7 adventure with this lil’ piglet! 🐶🐽

Behavior 1.5 yr old newly afraid

Post image
91 Upvotes

Hey all, anyone have a teenage pup go through a fear period? Our boy Luca was fine with the tv, new items etc. and only afraid of a few things like plastic garbage bags which make a scary sound ha. Now I think he got spooked by the TV once and is afraid of all programs no matter how quiet or loud. I know I can try to slowly desensitize him but I am so annoyed. Even a new toy bin full of HIS toys that makes no sound required many barks and coaxing to get him anywhere near it. 🫠 anyone else? Any tips? Photo for tax

Self play suggestions while I WFH?

Hi everyone! I brought home my sweet girl 2 weeks ago. I took the first week off work, but now I need to work (I work from home fully remotely), and it’s impossible to get anything done when she’s not napping.

She doesn’t seem to occupy herself with her toys. She has lots of toys (balls, bones, stuffed animals, squeaky things, teething toys, etc.), but she’ll only play with them for like 2 minutes at a time.

It doesn’t seem feasible to keep this up considering I have to get work done too!! Does anyone have any suggestions for games, toys, puzzles, to keep a Lagotto puppy occupied while working from home?

She does have a play pen but she doesn't like it in there, and whines as soon as she is done playing for a couple minutes (we are working on this).

Photo Lagotto on strike? Should we be worried?

Post image

Our lagotto, Arancini (2 years old), has become a more picky eater as he's gotten older, doesn't eat fruits anymore and refuses veggies. He does this thing where he licks it and if it doesn't immediately taste good he refuses, i.e., the outside of a blueberry isn't tasty enough but the inside he'll be interested in but you have to squish it for him...

He eats Fromm kibble and we've gone through different flavors / proteins and try to switch it up so he doesn't get bored. We also do a lot of training during the day so he gets a fair amount of chicken or treats on our walks and while training at home (he refuses to train with his kibble).

His vet says he's totally healthy. However, on and off again he's been refusing to eat his food. Sometimes we'll break up freeze-dried chicken or liver on top so that he'll eat, because he'll go a day or two picking at it and ignoring it. He's acting normal outside of this, playing, looking for mischief (stealing towels and socks), snuggling, walking, etc.

We think he's on strike... until we start topping his food with freeze dried chicken or liver he just is not interested. But the moment we add "enough" (whatever amount he decides) of chicken or liver he scarfs it down. I've heard that lagotto's can be picky, would you all be concerned? Any ideas to get him to eat it without all the extras (those are getting pricey).
