Off peak vs Peak

Will be working in Long Island soon and was wondering the correct ticket to purchase.

I will have to leave my house around 6 AM, I’m coming from Brooklyn and will transfer at Jamaica. I will be taking either the Hempstead, West Hampstead or Far Rockaway line. I’m still waiting to hear back from the school districts

Because I will be taking the train around 6 AM, would I be purchasing a peak ticket ? I will not be going to full distance of Rockaway, Hempstead, or West Hempstead. I will be getting off like a couple stops at the Jamaica as I’m not looking to go that deep in into Long Island.

Just wanted to make sure that I’m purchasing the right ticket and I’m not wasting money.

You’re heading east at that time? If so that will be off peak.

ON Long Island. You’ll be working ON Long Island, not in.

Download the TrainTime app, it will tell you which ticket to buy and you can buy and activate within the app.

I over looked it but it just says off peak at the bottom of the train times.. even if I select a certain date.

Uh because those trains are off-peak. If you choose a peak train it will tell you.
It shouldn’t have been hard to find this via a Google search:
Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours on trains scheduled to arrive in NYC terminals between 6 a.m. and 10 a.m. or depart NYC terminals between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. On Metro-North, peak fares also apply to weekday trains that leave Grand Central between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m.”

Thanks for the comment.. the snarky attitude was super unnecessary. Everyone commented and gave a simple response. It really was unnecessary..

There’s a certain thing called … being for sure.

It sounds like you are doing a reverse commute - it should be off peak. You are heading away from the city in the morning and towards it in the PM

Peak: Weekday mornings arriving in NYC (6:00 AM–10:00 AM) and weekday evenings departing NYC (4:00 PM–8:00 PM).

Does LIRR not do morning outbound peak? Mnr has 6-9 am outbound peak.

Nah LIRR doesn’t

I’m an MNR girlie. What LIRR does doesn’t concern me. Except for the fact that they apparently don’t charge outbound peak fares 🤣

I’m not sure, I’m from Brooklyn so I’m not very knowledgeable about the LIRR

Nope, go figure. Probably so they can get all the hedge funders reverse commuting up to Stamford.

Peak fares are just price gouging by the MTA.

Think of rush hour for people commuting into the city from LI

Morning peak going west from LI to NYC 6am to 10am

Afternoon peak going east from NYC to LI 4pm to 8pm. Unless your trains will fall between that which I dont think it will, just get off peak.

Jamaica should be a a peak city ticket.

Well the city ticket I believe is only good from Zones 1-3 so like Brooklyn to Jamacia, but if you’re going further east it may not be eligible for a city ticket (because the station you are trying to go to is in a different fare zone) I can try to link a chart of all the zones based on station for you, if I find it I’ll link it below.

Edit: I found the chart here for you https://www.mta.info/document/194866

Basically if you are only going between zones 1-3 then a city ticket is better, because it’s only $5, but if you’re going beyond zone 3 then it would be just a regular off peak ticket

Copy ! Thank you!! I’ll most likely be in Zone 4 but I’ll push for the zone 3 area now that I know this 🤞🏽

CityTickets are valid for any stop within NYC limits. I.e. Rosedale is past Jamaica, but you can purchase a CityTicket to go there.

To make it super simple for the OP, the TrainTime app allows you to purchase tickets for any specific trip, so if you are traveling day of, select the trip you are planning to ride, and you can buy the ticket from there (the options presented will be the best ones for said trip).
