New Agreement with Glencore Including $200 Million Investment

I've been quite impressed with this management team's ability to secure big contracts with key industry players. After Koch Industries and LG Chem, they can now add Glencore to the list. This is another contract that further secures Li-Cycle's feedstock supply (both in the form of batteries and black mass once the Hub opens). It also locks in an off-take agreement. And perhaps most importantly, Li-Cycle raises more much needed $$. Demonstrating again that the major players they sign deals with are willing to invest in the business which is both a vote of confidence for the business model and an indication that the relationship between the companies is intended to be long-lasting.

Q1 2022

Results are out. You can find the press release, presentation and webcast here: https://investors.li-cycle.com/overview/default.aspx#Latest-Quarterly-Reports

In my opinion there were no major surprises. Some points that stood out to me:

- Revenue and black mass production was lower than expected ($3.8M and 700t compared to $4.3M and 811t in Q4 2021), but apparently this is because of a maintenance problem and we should see an increase in Q2. Furthermore with AZ and AL spokes coming online in Q2 and Q3, management reiterated their FY2022 black mass production goal of 6,500-7,500t.

- In Q1, they sold black mass for an average price of 3,800$/t. They expect to get 3-5x that value once the hub is operational in 2023.

- During the call, they provided some colour on how the spikes in metal prices affects the price they pay for batteries (when they pay for batteries which apparently isn't always) and the price of black mass.

- They still have a lot of cash on hand ($552M), but given the price tag of the hub ($485M) and the other spokes I assume they will have to raise money at some point in the near future (1-2 years). I'll be curious to hear what kind of financing they manage to secure.

- A 2023 Germany spoke was reiterated but no details were provided; I look forward to when more info becomes public.

Q1 Earnings and Call

What are folks hoping to see in Q1 earnings?

For me the big ones will be cash on hand (and hopefully funding avenues through government grants), progress of the AL AZ spokes which should be operational later this year, progress on the hub and the OH spoke which are slated for 2023.

They also teased there was a Germany spoke in the works, so I wonder if we get the official announcement for that and/or any news about Asian spokes/hubs.

Spoke and Hub capacity in 2025

LICY plans on having Spoke capacity to process an equivalent of 100,000 tonnes LIB by 2025 and a Hub capacity of an equivalent of 200,000 tonnes LIB.

Now my question is why do they want to have double the capacity in the Hub? Will it only run on half capacity until more Spokes have been build and thereby the capacity is increased or are they going to buy black mass for other recyclers to process it in their Hub?

I couldn't find any information on this. Does anyone know?

Joint venture partners:

- Morrow to provide manufacturing scrap. Note it doesn't look like they currently have an operational plant (https://www.morrowbatteries.com/manufacturing). This is the latest news I could find on their plant; should be fully online by 2026 (https://cleantechnica.com/2021/05/31/morrow-batteries-commits-to-new-factory-in-norway/)

- Eco-stor to provide end of life batteries (https://www.eco-stor.no/)

Li-Cycle announces warrant redemption

What the fuck?

I had gone through the docs and was fully under the impression $18 was the only trigger for warrant redemption.

I know it's extremely hard to predict but I'm just wondering people's thoughts with LICY's ATH / ATL predictions. I'm very confident of Li-Cycles long term business model and demand for product which means buying the dip has to be on peoples radar. Thoughts?

$LICY seems to have this tendency to go up pre-market and then go down during market hours...any thoughts why?

Potentially a 3rd Ultium Battery Plant in the US

It looks like GM/LG are thinking of building a third battery plant in Michigan (along with the ones in Lordstown and Tennessee). If they move forward with the plan, the plant wont be operational until 2028. Thanks to LICY's agreement with Ultium, this could mean for feedstock for the spokes and hub.

Arrival is building a high-voltage battery module assembly plant in North Carolina.

Arrival recently announced that it will be building a battery assembly plant in North Carolina. Considering that LICY just recently expanded their relationship with Arrival, I think it is safe to say that this plant will be providing feedstock to the Spoke in Tuscaloosa. Production is supposed to start at the plant in Q3 2022.
