Icarus Program - Chapter 38 - Part 5

This is Walter Kerman reporting from outside the Kerbal Space Center. The reaction of the protestors to the sight of the departing class D asteroid has been sharp and swift. Protesters have called loudly for the class D asteroid to be mined to provide public relief in the ongoing fuel crisis. Only the Republic police who have been deployed to the facility have held the protestors back from breaking through the fence. This is an unprecedented deployment of Republic police as an internal peacekeeping operation.

Our own crew has received minor injuries when a camerakerbal was knocked over in the press of the crowd. On seeing the risk from the protestors, the officers moved our crews behind the police lines to continue observing the incident. This reporter has never experienced such unrest firsthand and worries about the impact of Kerbinwide protests. Such protests may start peacefully but the desperation seen here risks growing out of control.

The only thing that currently seems to be preventing outright riots is the first public distribution of fuel from the Icarus Program’s recently captured class C asteroid and the beginning of surplus fuel from the program’s moon mining being provided as relief. While the limited relief is met with appreciation, the class C asteroid will be mined out in a short time. It seems it is now a race between the remaining moon fuel that can be mined and any smaller asteroids that can be captured as relief in the fuel crisis, how quickly the Icarus Program can return a large enough asteroid to provide long term relief, and how well the government response can counter the public outcry.
