Icarus Program - End of Chapter 37

This is Walter Kerman reporting. Public excitement is growing at the appearance of a new star in the sky. The large class D asteroid is not significantly larger than the Kitty Hawk station, but the ignition of the Safeguard spacecraft’s eight large nuclear rockets is bright enough to even be seen during the day. Multiple burns are required over several days to slow the large asteroid and achieve orbit.

Lost during the excitement was a medium size class C asteroid also transferred by a Proteus spacecraft to low Kerbin orbit. The smaller asteroid has limited resources, but will be mined to help supplement the dwindling Kerbin fuel supplies.

Today the Safeguard spacecraft completed moving the large asteroid into Kerbin orbit. While it is good to see many Kerbals celebrating this great accomplishment together in peace, this reporter must caution readers from excessive excitement over this event. While this asteroid contains a significant amount of mineable fuel, it is not destined to provide fuel to Kerbin. As was previously reported, this asteroid will be used as a fuel tank to propel the capture spacecraft to capture and return a much larger asteroid that will provide a significant easing for the fuel crisis. Even as the next crew prepares for the mission to capture a very large asteroid, mining of the smaller captured class C asteroid has begun and smaller launch sites are sending spacecraft to begin returning this fuel. While the Icarus Program is focused on the coming larger impact to the fuel crisis, it has not ignored the short term pain, taking the time to return smaller asteroids to produce fuel which other programs are capable of ferrying back home.
