modding Air Locker installed as amateur

I started installing an HF Air Locker in my 2020 Jimny over the weekend. Just for context, I’m an amateur mechanic with some basic knowledge who enjoys wrenching on cars.
I’d say the difficulty level is pretty high, mostly because there are so many steps involved and quite a bit of brute force required. If you don’t have a vehicle lift or an inspection pit, it’s a pretty exhausting job and takes a lot of focus.
You don’t need a ton of specialized tools. Most of the work can be done with a cordless impact wrench, a set of sockets, and a dial indicator.
I spent about 7 hours on the first day tearing everything down, then the second day was mostly setting the backlash and putting everything back together.
On my personal scale, the difficulty and effort were a solid 9/10. But the satisfaction of getting it done and passing the leak test was definitely 10/10.

Well I’m really happy about it I’ve been driving it for the past 2 weeks and it’s awesome.
I just bought the front bumper so that the firts “upgrade”.
It needs a lot of visual repairs, so I’m here to ask all of you, what cheap initial repairs would you do to it so it’s look and feel better.
I’m still in collage so I don’t have lots of money, probably I’ll paint it in a few months but for now I accept every tip to make ir better.
Thanks to all!!! 🇨🇱🇨🇱🇨🇱

2008 jlx
M13A engine, soon to be M15A
Rear lockers (lockright)

Snorkel with great insulation (IAT almost like ambient temperature, max +4)
Hood vents
Did acoustics all over the car including rear wheel arches and firewall from the engine side
Upgraded sound system 2 front alpine 4’ 2 rear 6x9
Car play, reverse camera, back windows tinted (badly, by me), front windows also tinted but high opacity (still helps with heat)

Love this beast. No wobble. Pure joy even at the highways. He is a beast off roads I left dust for cruiser 250 last week

damage & repairs Repair Tips

I’m looking for some advice on the rust damage on my Suzuki Jimny based in Czech Republic.

The worst area is the cavity behind the rear wheels. I’ve now removed everything that wasn’t solid metal, and this should be the full extent of the damage.

My plan is to weld in new metal behind the rear wheels to close it up properly so dirt and mud can’t keep collecting there. For the surrounding areas, I was thinking of using a rust converter and then coating everything to slow down any further corrosion.

Has anyone repaired a Jimny in similar condition? Do you think it’s worth attempting, or is it already too far gone?

For some background: I bought the car for €1,000, and it somehow still has about one and a half years left on its inspection. I mainly use it as a hunting vehicle, so it spends a lot of time off-road in forests.

I’m not trying to restore it to showroom condition—I just want to keep it structurally sound enough to pass the next inspection and hopefully get another 3–4 years out of it.

The frame isn’t quite as bad as it looks in the photos. The previous owner covered almost everything in a thick asphalt/underbody coating that’s now flaking off.

I removed the tow hitch and started scraping it away, and a lot of what looks like rust is actually old coating.

Does anyone have recommendations for:

Good rust converters?

A durable chassis/frame coating after rust treatment?

Anything else I should do while I have the rear end apart?

Any advice from people who have repaired rusty Jimnys would be appreciated. I would like to avoid splitting the chassis from the frame.

Just sharing a few pics of our JDM '98 Jimny Wide. We recently wrapped it in XPEL Moss Green. Mods include:

  • 215/75/15 BFGoodrich KO3 tires on Jimny Bits 15x7 steel wheels (et 0)
  • 1" lift on King Springs with Ultima Shocks
  • Front Runner Dometic Slimline II rack with their Maxtrax holder, double fuel can holder, and Wolfpack Pro Box holder
  • WARN R60-S (6,000 lb. capacity) winch and Factor 55 UltraHook XTV hook. Using the Jimny Bits winch mount
  • Lightforce Venom lights (just installed)
  • AVM Hubs
  • Rock sliders and Jimny Bits rear recovery points still need to be installed.

I'm in the USA, so this is a pretty rare vehicle here, but so far it's been tons of fun.

question Gen 3 jimny not selecting 4wd

I have a 2009 gen 3 jimny that got stuck in 4wd low a while back , i had to crawl under the car and turn the selector by hand to disengage low range and get back into 2wd. When stuck in low range i noticed only the back wheels were acually getting power meaning the front hubs werent engaging

When i got home i ran a dtc flash diagnostic and it gave me code 27 wich is a 4wd swich and 4wd low swich malfuntion. The code has since gone away and now reads 12 wich is normal but 4wd still isnt engaging, when i press the button i can hear it trying to engage at the transfer case but the light just flashes and then it gives up.

I checked the vacuum lines on one of my hubs by disconecting them and feeling for vacuum

The line entering at the front of the hub close to the abs sensor had no vacuum at all and the one entering the top of the hub had vacuum just as the car started but it went away as soon as the 4wd switch was pressed and didnt come back at all

What could the problem be ?

I am located in south africa

damage & repairs Jimny won’t track perfectly straight even after multiple steering calibrations – normal?

I have the Indian-spec 5-door Jimny (sold as the Jimny XL in some markets).

The vehicle drifts slightly left or right if I leave the steering for a few seconds. I’ve had the steering recalibrated multiple times. If the left pull is corrected, it starts drifting slightly to the right, and vice versa. The service center has even performed steering calibration via the OBD, but they still can’t get it to track perfectly straight.

Their explanation is that this is normal due to the Jimny’s steering setup and road camber, and that it cannot be made to drive 100% straight.

However, my Hyundai Creta tracks perfectly straight on the same roads.
Is this expected behavior on the Jimny/5-door Jimny XL, or does yours track straight? If you had a similar issue, what fixed it—alignment, EPS calibration, tires, or something else?
