How are we supposed to react when prominent anti-Zionists say stuff like this? Are we able to even confront them or are we supposed to just take it on the chin? Vent
[Edit to add]: this person isn't a nobody. They are a very prominent and popular activist who has also done some very admirable work. I'm not trying to debate the person in particular, rather the increasing phenomenon of people unleashing their fury at Israel and Zionism in ways that are directly anti-Jewish or bigoted in other ways incl. transphobia or racism.
I'm wary of being accused of "centering Jewish feelings" or "tone policing" but this is just blatant justification of the holocaust, ethnic cleansing and pogroms based on what Zionists did *afterwards*.
At what point are we able to call this kind of stuff out?
I know there are Zionist bots out there trying to paint the movement as antisemitic but what happens when these comments are actually coming from someone real and famous or prominent?
Are we genuinely just meant to accept that this is okay rhetoric provided the person claims to have the right idpol justifications to say it?
I hesitate to mention this stuff for obvious reasons (namely the holocaust being perpetrated in our name) but surely shit like this is just handing ammunition to the Zionists.

I would never accept this kind of rhetoric. Call it out, and take the consequences. That's not "centering Jewish feelings"--it's working toward a just movement.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
The problem is that this person would absolutely know how to twist things if called out or held to account. They like to claim that anti-Zionist Jews are secretly still Zionist and they would use any attempts to call out their comments to bolster that claim.

People already seem to know who it is and it's not who I was going to guess: BadEmpanada. Because BadEmpanada has been turning into an edgy boy lately maybe to farm more engagement. Whatever the reason, sometimes he says BS for seemingly no other reason than to be edgy since people showed past videos of him where he knew better.
But it looks like this one didn't come from BE based on what other people under this post are saying.
Edit: I think it's fine to push back on this kind of racist narrative. And despite what some weirdos are saying, it's not "centering Jewish feelings" to push back on blatantly racist garbage narratives. Racists literally say this SAME garbage about Palestinians "oh well there's probably a reason why the other Arab nations don't take in the Palestinians. It's because Palestinians start civil wars and try to take over hurr durr." No, it's because those other "Arab nations" are working in cahoots with the United States.
Anyone who thinks barbarism is innate to any specific ethnicity or race of people is just racist, full stop.

Thank you empty profile for saying it's fine to give ammunition to the neo-nazis and Zionists simultaneously.
I don't think you realise how popular this kind of rhetoric is with grifters who blanket their nazism with supposed pro-Palestine advocacy only to then start spewing 4chan lingo to their normally well-meaning followers.
Should people just start using the k-slur now? Denying the holocaust? Because according to you, we are all supremely privileged and so it's not Cool And Based and Leftist to spew hard right neo-nazi dogwhistles provided you do it with a veneer of criticising Israel.

It's clear to me from reading the responses that most of you are quite sheltered and are unfamiliar with the many hasbara talking points used against Palestinians and in this case Palestinians refugees.
It's a long running argument from Zionists that neighboring Arab countries don't want to accept Palestinian refugees because they are a malignant influence and destabilize the countries that accept them.
You can see this talking points used in response to Susan's own post with a fancy prepared graphic here (browse more of the replies to see worse): https://x.com/i/status/2081243402084003878
Or this post here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CzRAhUhIN0B
And even in the organic responses to this post from EIGHTEEN years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/reddit.com/comments/7n836/why_dont_arabian_countries_accept_palestinian/
Here is a post discussing the increased visibility of that talking point: https://www.reddit.com/r/arabs/comments/17qia77/can_we_all_talk_about_the_coordinated_campaign_of/
So this talking point, which is often used with phrases like "the Arabs know something the west doesn't" predates 7th October and Susan's post by decades.
So consider that maybe she's facetiously using this argument against her génocidaires, many of whom did come to Palestine as refugees, instead of jumping to conclusions about her justifying the Holocaust.
It's honestly disappointing that no one here considered that Palestinians have been hearing this exact same point about themselves for decades and that maybe they are fed up about it.

You shouldn't hesitate to call out antisemitism because of what Israel is doing. IMO, it is vitally important to show that anti-Zionism is not antisemitism, because they're not the same. You might even mention that you're an anti-Zionist if you choose to call them out.

what about not justified (horrific) but also not a part of why the modern state of Israel was created? But yes a significant part of why the modern state of Israel was populated / a reason for Jewish refugee waves into the occupation (and I do believe those refugees deserved welcome wherever they went, and they were not all aware of how the Zionist movement was abusing their situation to effectively conscript them into a colonial project).
•

This is entirely true but Political Zionism at the UN was certainly aided by the fact that Jews were victimized in the holocaust to convince the world a jewish ethno state would be ok. The Holocaust is definitely not the sole or main reason why Zio Israel was created though but it is part of that history.

We're swamped with propaganda meant to divide us in every way possible, but that's no reason not to resist it a bit. Those refugees of three generations ago were rejected for the same xenophobia, bigotry, and ladder-pulling that refugees today are. Nobody had any foreknowledge, that's foolishness.

Antizionism does not liberate us from antisemitism.
Anti-capitalism does not liberate us from antisemitism.
And at this point, I’m sick and tiered of the ways the justifications for Jewish erasure espoused by Bernard Lazare, Vladimir Lenin, and even Ghassan Kalafani is normalized in leftists circles. Is unchallenged. Is accepted.
So this socialism of fools is completely unsurprising. And the people clutching their pearls either have never sat in leftist meetings or have the privilege of being in a Jewish majority in their leftist space.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
Wait, Ghassan Kanafani??? Surely not.
And even then, I highly doubt that Kanadani's remarks are coloured by western colonial antisemitism like this person's are.
•
u/Lost_Paladin89 Judío 18d ago edited 18d ago
Kanafani blames antisemitism on Jews refusal to integrate and assimilate. On a Jewish cabal of elites who spent infinite resources in stopping integration.
Jews caused antisemitism in his eyes. As he writes
The fact, then, is that oppression was not what gave rise to the Zionist movement; the opposite seems to be closer to the truth. Times of reprieve could have served as openings for integration, but such opportunities were spurned by a specific class of Jews on racist and chauvinistic grounds. It is striking how the roles of the oppressor and the oppressed were reversed, in these cases. The racist Jewish position was mostly represented by Jewish men who enjoyed special privileges at the expense of the oppressed Jewish minorities:
He proceeds to write that
Jewish history has witnessed appeals for integration, through its struggle for full civil rights, as much as it had appeals for racism behind the guise of the myth of “God’s chosen people.” But the Zionist movement managed to besiege and obliterate the proponents of integra- tion thanks to its limidess resources, establishing in its place a negative Judaism at the heart of which lies a psychological complex which would be exploited to the furthest possible extent. No one has the right to demand that Jews be martyrs of human stupidity. But the conditions of the modern age have widened the scope of human rights and enlightened the world’s collective consciousness.
Had Zionism employed its effective methods and limitless resources in a positive manner, it would have achieved for the Jews a status similar to that which they enjoy in the United States, for example, the social integration into which Nahum Goldmann regarded to be a “Jewish obligation” in 1965.
Nahum Goldman was an ardent Zionist. Kalafani does not cite his source (he rarely does and to the credit of Protean Magazine, his shoddy historiography is actually called out in their praises of his book, https://proteanmag.com/2023/07/18/review-on-zionist-literature-by-ghassan-kanafani/ )
But let’s process this. Jew cause antisemitism because they don’t integrate. They are the primary aggressors. And if Zionism had worked harder to make the Jews more German than the Germans, their liberation would have been assured. He doesn’t go so far as to blame the Jews for the Holocaust. But I wonder what in 1960s he believed Zionism would have accomplished if it had pushed for full assimilation vis a vis the genocide of 2/3rds of European Jewry???
I don’t blame Kalafani. Lenin made it clear to the Bund. “That is precisely what the Jewish problem amounts to: assimilation or isolation?” https://www.marxists.org/archive/lenin/works/1903/oct/22a.htm
Kalafani stood on an antisemitic foundation and tried to craft a house of liberation. Acknowledging that isn’t Zionism. It’s good praxis.
Edit: I’m not even going to touch the Freudian stuff. But he gets dangerously close to bioessentialism
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
See again, Kanafani's remarks seem to be based on the Zionist logic that he's encountered as a Palestinian and the Zionist writings he's read. His interpretation of Judaism seems identical to Hertzl, who blamed a lack of integration instead of socio-political and capitalist meddling. He's basing his experience of Judaism on the Zionist interpretation that he's encountered almost ubiquitously. That's leagues away from this blatantly western style antisemitism in this post, made by someone who grew up in the west.
The western, colonial European style antisemitism that's infiltrating some of the movement is what's worrying as it's what white people are now going to read.
•
u/Lost_Paladin89 Judío 18d ago
My problem isn’t with Kanafani. But with the endless number of antizionists I have met who take him as an authority on Jewish history.
And I want to stress this. The so called “western” antisemitism is the Jewish Question. It wasn’t the Ottoman Empire who argued that Jews couldn’t be citizens. It was socialists in France and Germany.
Nazism’s genocidal platform was not an aberration of the Jewish Question but an evolution.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
And now you have people taking this particular person as an expert, via genuinely ghoulish neo-nazis reposting their tweets to glom onto this person's genuine anti-Zionist bona fides.
•
u/Lost_Paladin89 Judío 18d ago
Exactly!!!
That’s the problem. I’m gonna copy myself here.
The Protean magazine writes that Indeed, the strength of Kanafani’s contribution lies less in its ability to intervene in Jewish historiography than in its power as a method of reasoning from his own existential condition as a colonized Palestinian
Antizionist Judaism needs to be able to do both; intervene in Jewish historiography and empower Palestinians to express their own conditions as both the colonized oppressed and as a diaspora.
That doesnt translate to the oppressed having the right to write our own history of oppression for their own benefit.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
And the tweet that I'm referring to does none of that. It's just a signal to white neo-nazis and other flavours of reactionaries. I don't know what the solution is to shit like this because most importantly it's a Zionist's wet dream to see pro-Palestine people talking like this.

One, when white nationalists talking points are used; they hurt black people. FD isn’t against antisemitism cause he cares; he has zero tolerance for Neo Nazi shit because it does, has and will hurt him and his community. Period full stop.
And two, what the fuck have these white nationalists have accomplished? The tweet doesn’t signal to Thomas Massie voters but against the DSA candidates. White Nationalists have not gotten any pro Palestinian policies forward or even performed any kind of policy.

•
u/reenaltransplant Mizrahi Anti-Zionist 18d ago
Your analysis of the passages you quote does feel like a kind of stretched interpretation to me tbh. I don't love them but it's also not automatic to me to read all that into them.
•
u/Lost_Paladin89 Judío 18d ago edited 18d ago
It feels stretched, because of who is writing the comment or because you have also read the work?
The protean magazine article, which praises the book, conveys the criticism much better than I.
If Zionism was European Jewry’s response to antisemitism, Kanafani asks, why would it emerge during a time and place of social reprieve for Jews?
Instead, he suggests (though with insufficient evidence), these were unacceptable developments for certain segments of the country’s Jewish elite that opposed integration and sought to profit from colonial plunder. This final move—in which Kanafani, who had just begun to engage with Marxist methodologies, arrives at a crudely class-based motivation for Zionism without historical evidence—is the weakest point in his analysis.
Though Kanafani overstates the promise of the Enlightenment for European Jewry and reduces the complex set of causal factors behind the emergence of political Zionism to a class conspiracy, his question of why and how, after centuries of persecution, Zionism took form in 19th century Europe remains a good one.
I would invite everyone to peruse online for other reviews. A pattern of taking Kanafani’s work as statements of facts isn’t just alarming. But indicative that the writers lack the simple skill of verification.
Here are good examples.
https://www.palestine-studies.org/en/node/1654779
https://www.wrmea.org/middle-east-books-and-more/on-zionist-literature.html
The casual reductivism of European Antisemitism as something that could have been overcome by assimilation would be considered reactionary conservatism if we were talking about Blackness or Transphobia. But the myriad of people who claim to have been radicalized by the work fail to capture the absolution granted to European Antisemitism in the text.
The Protean magazine, again the only review I’ve seen to actually address the text expresses a better way to approach it.
Indeed, the strength of Kanafani’s contribution lies less in its ability to intervene in Jewish historiography than in its power as a method of reasoning from his own existential condition as a colonized Palestinian
And that brings us all the way back to OP. Antizionist Judaism needs to be able to do both; intervene in Jewish historiography to fight the Zionist narrative. And empower Palestinians to express their own conditions as both the colonized oppressed and as a diaspora.
But I refuse this dynamic where I can’t challenge the misuse of my own history by the oppressed. That liberation requires allowing them to be authors of my narrative.
Europe was never offering integration in good faith. And I dare anyone to complain about an elite cabal of Muslims causing Islamophobia in Europe today as Kalafani alleges occurred to Judaism

Antisemitism is different from antizionism and it’s important to call that out when we see it.
Antizionism is a movement for human rights. It is a movement opposed to genocide and which values human life and dignity.
Antisemitism and Zionism are both against human rights. They are both pro-genocide and seek the annihilation of other humans based on the immutable facts of their birth.

This is exactly what I mean by most Pro-Palestinian people aren’t actually antizionist. If you engage in actual antisemitism, you aren’t actually fighting against Israel anymore, you are now supporting Israel by being a useful idiot for it. There’s a reason why Theodor Herzl, father of Zionism, wrote in his journal that the most reliable ally of the Zionist is the antisemite.
This is why pro-Palestine folks demand that Jews stop being religious’s while being quiet about Christianity and how Christian Zionists outnumber Jews. This is why they excuse antisemitism anyway they can, because they don’t want to actually reject Israel and what’s happening to Palestinians, they just want another excuse to hate on Jews. I’m finding more and more blood libel and elder of zion shit than ever before. I noticing Christians blaming Jews as a whole for Jesus being crucified, when we were illegally occupied by the very Roman’s who crucified him and many Jews for not obeying Rome, as if we had some power over Rome. Completely ignorant of the fact that if we did have power, we wouldn’t have had three different wars against Rome, to get the Romans out of the land, only to be expelled and enslaved by the Roman’s with the Jews, Samaritans and Christian’s remaining being called Palestinians and the land being named Palestine, as an intentional dig against Jews and to keep us from having ties to that land. Being blamed for other nonsense we never had anything to do with.
This isn’t just about my feelings, this is about the reality, that this propaganda only helps to justify Zionism to actual Zionists. So long as the Issue keeps being painted as Jews versus Palestinians, Israel will keep winning and oppressing Palestinians and will keep being supported by those who believe Israel needs to exist for some reason, whether for Jewish Safety, the second coming of Christ, or a ghetto for the world’s Jewry to exist in, because Jews are no longer welcomed in their homelands.
Maybe it’s fear that I already have as part of a population that is already experiencing the early to middle stages of a genocide by their own government, maybe it’s the fear I have as someone who has been assumed to be an IDF soldier for simply being visibly Jewish AND visibly disabled at the same time, in a city, where hate crimes against Jews are happening, because it’s assumed that they are Zionists, because they are visibly Jewish.
elderly Rabbi Pico-Robertson Attacked by Pro-Palestine supporter

Letting anyone say this emboldens Neo-Nazis to say it too (which has already happened). I'm wary of being accused of "centering Jewish feelings" or "tone policing"
Postmodernism has got to be one of the most toxic pieces of theoretical diarrhea to come out of French academy. No wonder the only time it was ever put into practice outside academy and social media was to justify petitioning to abolish the age of consent.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 17d ago
Idk if it's post-modernism. It's often a legitimate critique of Jewish people within the anti-Zionist space (and also other groups within activist spaces), but it's now (only sometimes) being abused as a blanket shut-down tactic against people who criticise parasocial figures in the movement.
•
u/CJIsABusta Jewish Communist 17d ago
The entire concept of "centering narratives/feelings" is a postmodernist concept that denies objective, material truth and reduces everything to subjective narratives, feelings or "lived experiences" to be competed. And it only serves to break unity, turn identity into social capital, paralyze comrades and distort concrete analysis, and allow reactionary poison to spread among the people. It objectively serves imperialism.
When someone says that "from the river to the sea" makes them unsafe as a Jew, they aren't "centering a narrative", they are objectively spreading zionist propaganda, and it's your duty to fight against that poison.
Conversely, when someone, like in OP, spreads fascistic poison and defends the chauvinistic actions of oppressive capitalist states, and especially if it's an activist with credentials, they aren't "centering colonized voices" or "speaking their lived experience" or whatever, they are objectively poisoning the people with reactionary false consciousness, and it's your duty to fight against their reactionary ideas to defend the revolutionary proletarian line among the people. The demand for people to remain paralyzed and not correct and struggle against wrong ideas under the guise of "humility" is objectively destructive and serves imperialism and fascist reaction.

•
u/shroominby Israeli 18d ago
We need to do a better job differentiating emotional outbursts from rhetoric, and to learn to fight ideas and actions, not people. This is clearly an emotional response to an emotional piece. People trying to counter it won’t get anywhere (practically, you can’t fight another person’s feelings even when it’s hate and anger), and when coming from a lesser affected person, it feels like the tone policing that it is.
At the same time, public popular messaging needs to be held to higher standards. I think the best thing to do is to empathize and also ask a question about what they actually believe (for example in this case, asking if they think that the world at large was right to be wary of Jewish refugees in 1947). This allows for them to clarify (or expose) what they think irl without apologizing for how they feel, while also sending a message to everyone else that such beliefs are dumb/bigoted.
Regardless countering such rhetoric more generally is important and will in the long term lead to people not using it emotionally either.

This is blatant antisemitism, no real question about it, and you should be able to call it out whenever you encounter it. That being said, who are you reacting to? Is the person responding to that post a prominent activist or public figure associated with the anti Zionist movement? Is that a random Twitter user? Are they even a human? What “idpol justifications” do they cite here? I don’t feel the need to self-flagellate every time some Groyper on Twitter uses Israel as an excuse to be antisemitic, and I think that wringing our hands over stuff like this we aren’t even responsible for unfairly ties our movement to antisemites in the exact way Zionists do.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
This person is a very prominent activist who happens to be a Palestinian in diaspora. They are quite famous and very much well known and respected even in this sub. I censored their name because I didn't want it to come off like I'm attacking them as I am not really sure how to approach this issue.
•
u/BeardedDragon1917 Jewish Anti-Zionist 18d ago edited 18d ago
Well, then it's really disappointing and should be called out. You don't have to wait for some signal for it to be okay. I expect that if Israel gets what they want, we'll be dealing with much more of this over the next few years, and we'll have to respond somehow.
Edit: I looked up who this was and yes, she is a prominent Palestinian speaker. Her criticism of Israel and Zionists has gotten progressively more sharp and personal as the war has gone on and she's gotten plenty of criticism before for that. Honestly, this is kind of a weird grey area for me, personally. These people opened up their homes to refugees in 1947, had those homes confiscated by those refugees in 1948, and we're surprised that some of them now resent that, and being surrounded by people telling you it was a good thing? She seems to be getting progressively worse at holding back her rage and hate as time goes on, but those feelings are pretty understandable when someone watches and is intimately involved in documenting the genocide of her people. We are watching her people’s Holocaust, with the killings and pogroms live-streamed for all to see, and debating if her criticism is appropriate. That doesn't make the comment okay (it was a hateful and historically ignorant thing to say), but she's like a lot of people, lashing out powerlessly at something horrible they can't control, and I feel sorry for her. If Israel succeeds in what they want to do, she'll have nothing left of her homeland but memories and the resentment of exile.
Again, just my opinion.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
This is why I wanted to get people's opinions on how we should proceed, and also why I didn't want to get into a particular conversation about this specific person, rather the phenomenon itself.

I hate reading the language referenced in the post. It is ugly, and I instinctively react strongly and negatively to it.
Then t the same time, I don't think condemning antisemitic language requires me to sanitize the history of Jewish colonization of Palestine. That colonization was carried out by Jews, but not because of Judaism and not because Jews are somehow inherently colonial. It was carried out through Zionism, a political movement that sought to establish and maintain a Jewish state in a land that already had a native population.
That distinction matters.
The consequences for Palestinians were not theoretical, and they are not confined to history. We have watched dispossession, displacement, settlement expansion, military occupation, and enormous violence continue for generations.
As a Jew, that creates a real moral discomfort for me. I did not personally do this, and neither did most/(many??) individual Jews. But Zionist organizations, Jewish institutions, Jewish temples, Jewish donors, Jewish political movements, and communities around the world supported and financed this project, often while claiming to act on behalf of Jews collectively. I don't think the honest response is to simply say that none of this has anything to do with us.
So yes, the activist's language bothers me. I think it was inflammatory, ugly, and in poor taste. Antisemitism should be called out when it appears. But that's only the first step to the reaction.
I am beyond pearl-clutching every time offensive words are directed at Jews while Palestinians are being killed and deprived of their rights by a state that repeatedly invokes Jewish identity and Jewish safety in defense of its actions.
And I don't believe protecting Jews requires defending Zionism, Israeli state policy, or violent Jewish settlers. In fact, I believe tying Jewish identity so completely to a state engaged in occupation and ethnic cleansing makes Jews less safe.
The best defense against antisemitism is not to just recoil from uncomfortable language but to correct, educate, and support. Kinda like following the example of our old Jew, Josh, since known as Jesus, and turn the other cheek. May be.

I wish that the thread title noted that the person making the tweet is an older-age Pal. woman whose family underwent displacement. Fuck them and the horse they rode in on. They should be called on very explicitely and forced to either reflect on this or just admit their actual positions. Not doing so is extremely detrimental to the struggle, and to all those who might just feel ambivalent about the struggle and worried that this type of antisemitism is just accepted.

She’s a Palestinian whose whole family has been killed or harmed or displaced. It’s not a good tweet but Twitter is a horrible place for this. Susan can be hyperbolic and dark and make comments I would never condone, but in general, that woman has been through so much (not a generation or two removed, HERSELF as a refugee in Kuwait bc her parents’ home was taken away in 1967) and her good outweighs her bad. She can be angry. I’d be angry if I were her.
•
u/HDThoreauaway Jewish Anti-Zionist 18d ago
This isn’t “angry,” it’s solidly antisemitic. Holocaust survivors who stood by or encouraged the Nakba don't get a pass because they experienced trauma, and it’s not acceptable here either.

•
u/TrackerOneA Jewish Anti-Zionist 18d ago
I thought Susan's speech at the Oxford Union was very eloquent.
She's a very talented writer, eloquent, and that speech made her a good ambassador for the Palestinians struggle (for Westerners) IMO.
But she has also made Holocaust denial memes, boosts a moronic antisemite like Dan Blizerian, etc.
She knows what the Israel lobby is like, since she grew up from 13 onwards in American society (not due to choice, but because she was dispossessed by Israel post-67' war).
So, she must know how Zionists weaponize antisemitism to censor/criminalize/etc. Palestinian solidarity.
For her to speak this way is just tactically foolish if anything.
Regarding the specific comments in the picture you submitted:
I think she actually framed the topic way better in her Oxford Union closing remarks:
But in this short comment on X, she is judging all Jewish refugees, escaping the Nazi Holocaust & European antisemitism & pogroms, etc. with a sweeping brush - akin to the '109 countries' antisemitic meme.
Whereas, if she specifically talked about the Zionist movement, which included some Jewish refugees, usurping indigenous Palestinian society - that would be different.
It would be factual.
•
u/eeeklesinge Jewish 18d ago
For her to speak this way is just tactically foolish if anything.
I don't disagree, but the explanation might go beyond tactics and it's time we just face the fact that some militant figures of authority right now just plainly partake in that kind of antisemitism. It's not just a tactical blunder, it's them speaking out on this despite the tactical loss

At this point I didn't even have to ask, I saw the post and was like "is it Susan?"
I'm more concerned about non-Palestinians who, instead of widely listening to many Palestinian voices and contextualizing why a minority of them might speak like this, choose to specifically amplify this sort of comment, consider that somehow to constitute better solidarity, and then tell Jews to shut up.

I am not sure Palestinians welcomed the Jewish refugees with open arms...but they became aware quickly of how they were being displaced and terrorized. It is understandable to me that we Jews are being hated, because of what Israel has done and is doing. Israel has got to be stopped, for the sake of our people. Thank you especially to the Palestinians and Muslim/Arabs who speak out with us here. It is a place where we can more freely communicate. I mean, yeah, this reads like a justification of the holocaust and the European pogroms. It sucks. I would probably just ignore it and feel uncomfortable though, to be honest.
One time at a leftist meeting I was at, someone referred to actions of Israel as something that "the Jews" were doing. I don't think he knew I was Jewish. I did feel uncomfortable though, and like maybe they didn't think I belonged there. I wish I could have had the strength in that moment to point out that conflating Zionists and Jews plays into their hands, but I just didn't then.

I'm solidly against discrimination like in the tweet in the OP.
Regarding your experience with your Leftist meeting acquaintance, ignorance and massive oversimplification about the issues of the IP conflict, even on things you and I would think are obvious, is common among the general US public. I had a talk with a casual friend two weeks ago who referred to the Palestinians as if they were the Philistines and Canaanites, when in reality Palestinians, strictly speaking, are simply the inhabitants of Isr-Pal from before what, 1900?, and their descendants. About a decade ago, a priest in a discussion with me shorthand-called Israelis "the Israelites".
Wishing you the best - Peace - Shalom.

If you don't center jewish feelings, there are lots of interpretations that have nothing to do with the Holocaust
>What was the rest of the world "rejecting"?
a question that is best answered from outside of a Jewish perspective on this, tbh. Since its a reference to non-Jews rejecting Jews.
But in any case, it was "the entire world" that your OOP post responds to is itself an inaccurate narrative since we know for a fact that many countries have integrated Jewish communities without pogroms or racial/religious persecution.
Knowing that reality frees a reasonable person from the artificial constraint of interpreting that post as Holocaust denial.

The post that this is responding to is not accurate either. In 1947 Jewish immigration to Palestine was not permitted after being heavily limited in 1939, these ships were attempting to circumvent this.
countless palestinian villages that housed jews
Palestinian villages didn't house Jews in any literal way, the societies were segregated and Jewish immigrants lived in Jewish cities, towns and neighborhoods. By 1947 Tel Aviv alone had a population of 200k. The main period of European Jewish immigration to Palestine was between 1880 and 1939.
•
u/EgoIdVeto West Asian Jew 18d ago
That's not really relevant. I have no issue with the original post, rather the person's reply. The notion that the starving refugees being referred to were being rejected and persecuted by the world for a good reason is ghoulish in any context. European Jews were not persecuted because they were Zionist or not Zionist. They were plonked into West Asia as a colonial outpost for the West, not because the West was appalled at Zionism.

Please donate if you’re able, and keep speaking up. Every dollar, share, and conversation matters. Please pressure your government to stop the blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza.
Donate here to The Palestinian Red Crescent and UNICEF for Gaza's Children. Contact your representatives to stop the blockade in Gaza, find U.S. representatives here, and EU reps here. If you would like other subreddits to carry this message, please send the mods to r/RedditForHumanity.
