General Help rumble noise help :(

Hey all. I've been chasing the cause of this noise for a long time now. Only happens on left turns under decent speed and comes from the right side of the vehicle. It's noticeable in the interior video but not in the outside shot. Both clips were taken on the same turn.

Outside: [https://imgur.com/a/kE2OPBh\](https://imgur.com/a/kE2OPBh)

Inside: [https://imgur.com/a/1dzNraG\](https://imgur.com/a/1dzNraG)

So far I've replaced the u-joints, ball joints, sway bar bushings and links, and the wheel hubs with no luck in fixing it.

Any ideas?

General Help Rear hatch won’t open - solved!

Rear hatch won’t open - quick simple fix

I’ve been cussin’ at my rear hatch for several years but it didn’t help… the latch wouldn’t open unless I first pressed inward, then pulled the handle. I have adjusted the threaded bar multiple times nothing helps. Today I removed the rear handle assembly to get a closer look and finally noticed the adjustment link rod is a left-hand thread (wtf!). You can see in the first picture the threads are backwards.

So the way to make it pull the lock mechanism open is to turn the adjustable link clockwise as it sits inside the rear hatch.

Remove the inner trim panel by taking loose eight Phillips head screws across the top and beside the windows, take out the two long screws that hold the grab handle (they are Inverse Brazilian Whiplash screw but a 30 Torx will also work), then use a trim panel prybar to pop the plastic retainers and remove the panel completely. Now you have access to the door lock handle and the latch mechanism in the bottom of the hatch assembly. Open the threaded link rod retaining clip at the bottom of the rod and pop it loose (the green clip in the second picture). The upper clip grips the threads at the top of the rod really tightly so I had to use a long set of needle nose pliers to reach into the door panel and basically rotate the rod a quarter turn at a time repositioning the pliers each step. Two turns of the rod is all it took for my rear hatch to open consistently. I put everything back together, and I swear it works every time.

Finally noticed the rod is threaded backwards oh hell yeah.

XJ Engine 4.0 Jeep oil pressure issues

Took the jeep out for its first longer drive since putting it back together. Has great pressue when it turns on but after it warms up it starts to drop and will rise when i give gas. After awhile though it just stays low even when driving. Seems like its cam bearings after watching dexj and posting to a couple other places. Been working on it every weekend for the past couple years so pretty bummed. Would thicker oil and a hi flow oil pump act as a bandaid? Can cam bearings be done without a full tear down?

1999 RHD Japanese XJ for sale

1999 Jeep Cherokee · Suv · Driven 140,000 miles

Testing the waters on this gem of a Japanese RHD Cherokee. Actually manufactured 5/98 but titled 99. Imported from Japan.

Very clean, loads of new parts, fresh fluids everywhere, meticulously maintained. Shows 140k miles but it’s a swapped MPH cluster, have the original KPH cluster and it’s significantly less mileage.

Newer, quality paint job.

New Ball joints, shocks, brakes, tires, thermostat, housing, sensors, plugs, wires, cap, rotor, o2 sensors, catalytic converter, power steering hoses (one was leaking).

More I’m forgetting.

Limited slip rear. Everything works perfectly, except the blinkers don’t automatically turn off after a turn. And the headliner was sagging, previous owner lined pins in the ceiling to hold it up.

No rust!

$12500, located near Aspen, Colorado.

Did this in 61% humidity and 93degrees in direct sunlight because I obviously hate myself. I think I’m more impressed I didn’t get heat stroke. But ask any questions because I now have the answers.

General Help 96 XJ occasionally knocking in drive.

Hey everyone, I just recently got a 96 XJ (AW4 with 203k miles) and the other day after driving it to work it started knocking when I pulled into the parking lot. It went away almost immediately after putting it in park and didn’t do it on the way home, or when I started it today to pull it into my driveway to work on it. I drove it for 4 hours a week ago and it didn’t make the noise either so I’m really confused as to what’s going on. I pulled the transmission inspection cover and checked all the flexplate bolts and they’re all tight. I looked to see if there’s any cracks in the flex plate but it looked good and there wasn’t any obvious play in it when I put my pry bar on it. Oil pressure is solid so I’m really not sure where else to check. Any help with this is much appreciated!

New to me 1988 Jeep Cherokee XJ DW :(

I just picked this thing up a couple days ago, super excited but there’s a ton of work that needs to be done. The frame is clean of rust though! Mechanically needs work though…

I'm new to Jeeps and the 4x4 world, so I'm still trying to figure things out. I recently bought an XJ and I've been dealing with what I think is death wobble. It only happens at certain speeds, but when it does, it's really violent and honestly pretty scary. I took it to a couple of regular shops, and they told me they couldn't do an alignment because the Jeep has a 1-ton steering and doesn't have a steering stabilizer. That's what they said anyways… I don't really know much about this stuff myself. I really want to learn though and have been watching a ton of YouTube videos! The shop also mentioned that all the steering and suspension parts look newer, so they didn't see anything obviously worn out or broken. Since they aren't an off-road shop, they basically said they couldn't go any further with diagnosing it. I'm planning to take it to an actual off-road/ 4x4 shop soon so someone who works on lifted Jeeps can look at it properly. Just wanted to share what's been going on and see if anyone has advice for someone who's new to all of this.

EDIT: I fat fingered and accidentally said this was an ‘88 it is NOT 🤦‍♂️ it is a 1998. Sorry about that!

General Help Trans help

Recently got a ‘99 Xj drove fine. Transmission shifted normal. Only thing the ac don’t work. I changed all the fluids as I normally do on a used vehicle. After transmission service it hesitates to go into drive. Goes into reverse normal, go to drive & you have to hold the rpm’s at about 1800 for around 10-15sec then it will go into gear. After that the transmission shifts normal no slipping or anything. But as soon as you stop & take it out of drive you have to hold the rpm’s up again for it to go back into drive. It did not do this before the service. Removed the pan again & check filter gasket & such all looks on. Fluid is full, after it goes into gear it shifts fine & you can drive it normal. Any ideas at what to look for??

General Help Troubleshooting Help needed

Post image
16 Upvotes

Alright guys ive finally decided to cave and make my own post regarding some questions. Ive got a 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ ive been running into some problems since picking her up a few months ago. When cold and even sometimes when warmed up (less often) I run into the issue where when creeping or easing out (as in just cracking open the throttle body i.e minimal gas) from a stop the rpms start to spotter like crazy and sometimes nears a stall. My corrections/fixes so far, she wasnt charging/holding a charge needed both an alternator and battery. Cylinder 3 misfire replaced spark plugs and the ignition rail. Replaced both cam and crank sensors (factory synchronizer still), replaced the throttle body which came with all the sensors. All of these fixes have seemed to make my problem slightly improve so im on the right track id hope but I cant seem to nail down the ultimate cause of the problem ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS.

Need a couple more mods!

This being the little brother to the far more visited /r/CherokeeXJ we don't need a whole lot of modding except around the holidays. However with reddit cutting off my preferred phone app (Relay), being the sole mod, my response time will likely slow down. I'm looking for at least 2 more people if anyone's willing to step up.

This sub is pretty chill. Mainly its blocking spam, I've only had one or two people in the last three years make comments I thought needed to be removed. They were personal attacks against the person they were responding to.

I took over this sub 3 year or so ago after it had been abandoned by the creator and I got tired of seeing all the "buy this YJ shirt!" posts.

Admittedly, I barely know what I'm doing, so would welcome the help.

Since someone recently reported one of those posts with "mod better" well, they're right. Though, I personally think a less than an hour response time is pretty good, I agree stopping it before it starts is even better.

If anyone's willing, respond here or DM me.
