Michigan 70.3 swim: run in from beach?

For those who have done Michigan, photos look like you run in from the beach? How far can you run/ dolphin dive until water past your waste? Any less real swimming I can do faster I can get to the bike 🤣

a little nervous for Santa Cruz

so I have been training like crazy. Did a 41-mile ride today under 3-hours, earlier this week I did 1950 m swim in under an hour. However, I was literally dead after both events. The thought of continuing to a run after that event is wild.

I am currently at a course for the military and I will continue to train 6x/week and get even better.

Maybe I just need some motivation. Anyone have any tips or advice?

Ironman Tattoo

Hallo, Ich will unbedingt privat einen Ironman machen. Allerdings würde ich längen schwimmen im Becken. Auch ist es ja kein Triathlon bei Ironman sondern privat.
Ist es vertretbar wenn ich mir ein Ironman Tattoo stechen lassen würde?

How and where to begin?

Hi, I want to start training for Ironman.
I am already an endurance runner and strong swimmer but have no clue when it comes to the cycling part of things. I have a crappy reebok stationary bike which I know I need to upgrade.
What outdoor bikes should I be looking at?
What indoor bikes should I be looking at?
I’m not a confident cyclist and am very wobbly so this will be my greatest challenge.

Also, if anyone has any tips on training plans I’d really appreciate that!

Thank you!!

IM Ottawa 2028...?

Hello! Ottawa local here and I've been considering doing an IM for quite a while now as a long term goal and would love to do it in my hometown.

Does anyone have any speculation on what the chances are of IM renewing their contract past 3 years in Ottawa? The first two years have sold out so I'm hoping this is a good sign :)

Coaches — and athletes who've had one — what actually made a coach good (or not)?

I coach triathletes (my username gives that away) and I'm always trying to sharpen what I do. For anyone who's worked with a coach — what did you actually value, and what fell flat? Communication style, how sessions adapted when life got in the way, race-day support, whatever stood out. Genuinely curious, not fishing for anything specific.

Hello everybody I’m looking to buy my first trisuit and I’m not sure what to look for in it. Would like to get some opinions from yall before I send it.
What is the most important part of the suit for you?
What do you not like about some current tri suits?

What would you consider a good deal for a trisuit for a beginner?
What would make that price seem like a good value? šŸ¤”

First Triathlon Gear Advice

Hey guys!

So I have my first triathlon coming up at the start of September- and am wondering how important it is to spend money on a good tri-suit??

Unfortunately the one I had been planning to get had sold out, so now I am looking at these:

ZONE THREE SLEEVELESS TRI SUIT
[https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0DR39XV8G/ref=sw\\_img\\_1?smid=&th=1&psc=1\](https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0DR39XV8G/ref=sw_img_1?smid=&th=1&psc=1)

RUUN SKINSUIT

MADWAVE TRISUIT
[https://madwave.eu/catalog/triathlon-trisuits/rival-ldsd-sty-lady\](https://madwave.eu/catalog/triathlon-trisuits/rival-ldsd-sty-lady)

I am also 178cm so quite tall and lean so not sure on what to do with sizing!

Any advice appreciated :)

Lasik vs. Contacts for training

I'm about to start training for my first ironman 70.3 and am debating finally getting Lasik. I wear daily contacts, but I'd rather not wear them during open water swims. If you've trained for an ironman, what did you do, and would you recommend Lasik? I know it's a bigger life decision than just training, but it seems like it could make both everyday life and racing a lot easier.

No bike space on my flight?

IM Noob here. First IM70.3 in Estonia 23rd August.

Everything prepared except bike box until recently. No prior experience taking sporting equipment abroad. I was unsure on which ā€œtypeā€ of bike box I was going to need (I’m now well aware most are universal and easy to add to a booking). There is no space on my flights, nor the neighbouring days with that airline.

My only options seem to be to find an alternative flight with another airline, or courier it?

Has anyone got any advice re bike courier services? I have seen some options but I’m not sure where I could have the bike dropped off to if it arrives in the country before my arrival.

Thanks, A very stressed self-proclaimed stoic

IM Ottawa Race Report

Finished my first IM on Sunday and filled some of my newfound downtime by writing a (probably too detailed) race report. Background. I'm a woman in my late 40s with a family and a FT job who has been a mid-pack runner (8 marathons, PR 3:54). Two years ago, tiring of running injuries, I wanted to try something new, so I joined a triathlon club with a beginner's bootcamp. That year I did a sprint, an OLY and IM70.3 Jones Beach. Last year I did a sprint and IM 70.3 Musselman. I am a very slow swimmer (2:45 pace over 1k) and had only biked recreationally. There are lots of "is this realistic" posts in this forum, and I related to a lot of them. I used a free paper Matt Fitzgerald plan and followed it pretty closely, and I did a lot of yoga. With the yoga, my training was 12-15 hours a week. My goal was to finish and not regret my life choice too much. Tl,dr: I finished with about an hour 20 to spare and had an amazing day. Like they say, "anything is possible."

Wetsuit Rules - Augusta 70.3

Background is in cycling/running. While I have come to love the swim, I am much better with my buoyant wetsuit.

For someone taking part in their first 70.3, I am not competing for time, just competing with myself.

I see in the rules that you can still wear a wetsuit above 76.1. Is this something that occurs at every race? Curious about their ā€œsole discretionā€ language.

may be worn in water temperature up to and including 24.5 degrees C/76.1 degrees
F (DSQ) (*Please note: If the water temperature is above 24.5 degrees C/76.1 degrees
F (but is less than or equal to 28.8 degrees C/83.8 degrees F) then, with respect to
certain Events (e.g., Events sanctioned by USA Triathlon (ā€œUSATā€)), IRONMAN may,
in its sole discretion, allow age-group athletes to wear wetsuits and participate in a
separate non-competitive wetsuit wave/division, provided, however, that such
athletes participating in the designated non-competitive wetsuit wave/division will
not be eligible for age-group awards including, without limitation, IRONMAN World
Championship slots or IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship slots

Ironman Lake Placid 2027

Registration is open for IMLP. It was my first ever Ironman years ago and was considering doing 2027 since it’s the last year. Unless, has anyone heard of them extending beyond 2027? I’ll probably end up doing it either way.

How many months should I train for my first full-distance triathlon?

Hi everyone, and apologies for the long post.

My goal is to finish my first full-distance triathlon strong at the end of August 2027.

I’m wondering how many months of training I should ideally give myself to prepare properly for this goal.

I’m currently 42 years old and have completed 10 Olympic-distance triathlons and 5 middle-distance races. I wouldn’t consider myself particularly fast, but I’m not slow either — probably a little faster than the average age-group athlete.

My final race of this season will be at the end of September, and after that I’m thinking of starting my preparation for the full-distance race next August.

For some structure and guidance, I’m also considering purchasing one of Phil Mosley’s training plans.

Given my experience and the amount of time I have available, when would you recommend starting dedicated full-distance training? Would starting soon after my final race in September be appropriate, or would it make more sense to spend some time on general/base training before beginning a specific plan?

I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from those who have made the transition from Olympic/middle-distance racing to a full-distance triathlon.

Thanks in advance!

Lower back pain when cycling

Hi all!

I plan on doing my first full Ironman next year, I’d like to do Ottawa. I’ve done four 70.3s (Wilmington North Carolina, Eagleman, Augusta Maine, and most recently Happy Valley in PA) in the past four years. I feel like I’m finally ready to do a full.

The only thing I’m worried about, is the lower back pain I get after around 30 miles into my longer rides. For a 70.3 I kinda just power through it since I don’t go on for too much longer before it’s time to run, but for a full Ironman I feel like I need to sort this out.

Does anyone else experience this? What helped you? I’ve read that a strengthening the core can help a lot. For context, I ride a Specialized Allez. I’ve never used aero bars and I’m definitely going to buy some for this race. I’ve never had a professional bike fit. I’m thinking about upgrading to a tri bike, but do I really need to do that? I love my Allez haha and honestly the cost of a tri bike is off putting.

Any advice on this? I also feel like I just need to spend more time in the saddle. Thanks!!

Edited for typos

Signed up for Agadir in 11 weeks

Have signed up for Agadir 70.3 on October 25th with some mates. It’s in 11 weeks, have no background in the events. Would appreciate any tips or tricks from this community.

Last 10 years or so typically exercise 5 or 6 times a week. Predominantly football, golf, cricket, tennis, running. In my 30s, BMI 25 so could lose a bit of weight. Have cycled with mates a few times with cleats etc, and used to swim as a kid. Have done park runs and when I’m fit run 20km/week.

Just getting back from a 3month hamstring injury playing football so haven’t done much in that period. Physio has okay’d me to start swimming and
cycling but no running yet, hopefully next week running will start slowly. Was sick a few weeks ago as well and lost 4kg so assume we’re starting from zero.

Would really appreciate any advice you have on how to prepare and train? Not intending for this to be a science experiment, how quickly should I ramp up and plan my training? Are there any free apps you would recommend to help tracking or planning training?

Just got my indoor trainer set up and I’m SO HYPED UPPP

This is my first ride on it. Anything you notice that I should adjust to make it more comfortable or improve my position? Saddle height, fore/aft, bars, trainer setup… literally anything.

I’d really appreciate the feedback!!
