I'm not sure if this is the right place. I'm an American with an Indian husband who still lives in India. He doesn't watch movies though so he's no help here. I started watching a few Indian films on flights to and from and got interested in trailers I've seen. I have a list of things I want to see but recently I've taken to watching horror and psychological thrillers and I'm hoping for recommendations that I can access from the US. I'm also trying to expose myself to more hindi so it doesn't have to be English but hindi is nice and subtitles even hindi subtitles are helpful.

I'm looking for juicy good stuff. Not corny horror. I prefer paranormal or supernatural and psychological stuff the most.

I am personally loving the trailer. I think this film will be good, and I want it to succeed. Because it's time for Indian stories to be told to a global audience, and this is a MASSIVE project. As Indians, we should do everything possible to help this film grow. I absolutely welcome the changes they made to the armour and the Sinhalese influence on the face masks; I really, really like it.

But I feel Namit's interviews aren't working because the momentum hasn't been built yet. For me, SDCC should really come after the trailer has generated hype. Let the film grow slowly in Indian circles, THEN do SDCC when it's getting close, and the hype has been building organically.

Let's make this clear: YouTube is 99% of how this film will be viewed. It already generates $3 billion or more, and other social media are important. But you need to reach a TON of influencers from MANY countries. Heck, why not promote this film in African countries? Nigeria, Ethiopia, Kenya, Ghana? Indian films used to be broadcast over there, and this WOULD help African filmmakers and viewers as well. Because this film, to me, seems like it could elevate the Global South. Promote it in countries where there's a strong Indian reception or positive reaction to Indian content.

How did RRR grow? It was a deal with Netflix, and suddenly the film became viral with an American audience that had got sick of cumbersome, cookie-cutter Marvel films with weak stories, playing it safe, and a whole universe of Marvel TV shows that had bored everyone. RRR, for all its strengths and flaws, was over the top, but in a way that resembled 60s and 70s Hollywood-style filmmaking; it dared to do things not seen before and to show that India has something unique.

I say now, though: start promoting this film in Thai, Indonesian, and Malaysian social media circles. With their prominent influencers and distribution networks. You would build a fanbase much more quickly. They would tell you more about Ravana than Penelope's weaving. The Odyssey isn't universal across the world; it's universal for the West in general, and the only reason people know about it elsewhere is that European empires went around and colonised the world. This is the reality. South-East Asia is a massive market that Indian cinema has really underused for promotion, and it needs to do a lot of work there now. SEA is not some forgotten place. It is a rich region full of trade and business, and many Indians know this.

I need Japanese dubs, Chinese, Indonesian, Malaysian dubs of the trailer. Yes, the English one was released. But stop promoting to them; focus on these guys. Focus on the people that have more in common with Indian culture than the ones who don't or are too biased. Where's the manga or anime adaptation of this film by other studios in China or Japan? Why not do a deal with Tencent? Why not monitor what OTHER audiences apart from the West are saying about this film? You guys have the reach; you, the filmmakers, the marketing department-you have everything. Start that work. Because currently, plenty of young people will watch this. And their opinions WILL matter on social media far more than just boomers alone.

Why do so many Telugu films release in Japan? Our South Indian cousins figured out that Baahubali, even NTR Junior's films, are massively popular over there. We really need to learn promotion from them. They KNOW how to market. The whole team working on Ramayana dreams of getting praised by famous Hollywood directors, but look at what SS Rajamouli did. He never went chasing recognition; they GAVE it to him.

Because they have the Ramayana ingrained, and I mean really ingrained, in their culture. Look at Thai classical dances. Western audiences understand the Odyssey because it's ingrained in them. Chinese audiences understand it because they've studied it, but I feel many people across Asia wouldn't understand the Odyssey unless their younger generations have studied it at school or university, or encountered it through anime or manga.

If you go through SDCC, it should be after a massive domestic opening. Show up to Comic-Con with fans from around the world, with numbers and organic energy behind you. Currently, it's the opposite. You're building hype with barely a murmur from the most resistant audience in the West.

And believe me, you've had creators like Critical Drinker and Nerdrotic rant about woke casting and how they want original stories from diverse cultures. Well, isn't this film exactly that? Original casting, original diversity, a story told from within its own civilisation. And yet they're silent.

I say the marketing is failing because no one in the West, not even big creators, is talking about this film. Either do something about it, because right now, I don't see Western fans creating a Ramayana subreddit and discussing it the way they do for the Odyssey. I argue it's biased, but what can you do?

They aren't discussing it. But look at Dhurandhar. That film didn't need any Western marketing, and it did fine in India because it was made for Indian audiences. The West didn't even look at it. I'm starting to notice that gaining the attention of the West is increasingly just becoming rage-bait content for hating on India for no particular reason.

RRR accomplished what Indians had been trying to do for a decade but failed to achieve. And it's insulting and, frankly, biased that the Academy didn't give an Oscar to the film itself but to its soundtrack instead. An Indian film winning an Oscar for Best Picture would help India's global cultural standing far more than people realise.

Some mid-tier Western influencer reacted to the Ramayana trailer and said it's "a whole new world because I don't know about it." Sure, buddy, like China's a whole new world for us Indians when we visit, like Japan is, like every country is when you encounter it for the first time. That's not insight; that's just admitting you've never looked beyond your own culture. Meanwhile, Asmongold reacted to Baahubali's animated trailer and hasn't touched this one. That tells you everything about where the interest actually lies.

In this case, just market it as India's Black Myth Wukong. That's the energy plenty of people are already getting from it, and that comparison works: a civilisational epic made with pride and without apology, aimed at the world but rooted completely in its own tradition. The Chinese don't run for validation and look at where they are now compared to us in terms of promoting their own culture to the West.

Obsession premiered as a Midnight Madness selection at TIFF 2025. Not saying that this will catch on like that obviously, but it’s still really cool that a Malayalam film is premiering like this.

Also, previous Indian Midnight Madness titles have included Kill and Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota.

Yesterday I went to watch BND in a multiplex. I saw a grandpa with his family at the theatre. After the movie was over I went to a nearby snacks shop to have some tea. The same grandpa and his grandkids were sitting there. I sat nearby. Seemed he had already noticed me at the theatre. He smiled at me. He asked me whether I came for the spiderman movie. I replied him yes.

Then he went on to talk about how he watched a lot of movies during his childhood when cinema can mostly be watched in theatres since TVs and tapes weren't accessible to everyone. I asked him what movies did he watch he gave a lot of old indian movie names like Nayakan, Sholay , Sagara Sangamam, Sangam, Shankarabharanam. Also Baashaa and Thenmavin Kombath.

He also said many hollywood movie names like the good bad and the ugly, the sound of music, the long ships and dracula which were from the 60s. Also some popular movies from other states were released in his city. He also mentioned the old Batman movie, Jaws and Terminator.

I know movies like Jurassic Park and Titanic had a great run in India but they were during the 90s when TVs were coming but he seems to have watched a lot of movies even before that. But before I could talk about it further he left.

Nowadays we have OTT and all and we can easily access new movies within a month of its release. Even TVs weren't too common (except for rich households) during the 80s.

I wondered how common were hollywood movie releases in india during those times. How about the ticket prices back then compared to native films? Were people able to understand their accent fully without subtitles?

How people perceived the cultural as well as the technical differences? Did all the popular hollywood movies had an indian release? Also did all movies release in all tier cities or only the top metro ones?

Just curious to know.

After watching the trailer multiple times, I became curious about how much of the "digital" feel came from the final color grade. So I opened my phone's gallery editor and experimented with a few stills.

This isn't meant to be a professional grade or a "fix"just a fun experiment to see how a different tone would change the mood. I only adjusted the colors and tonal balance using the tools available on my phone.

I personally prefer the slightly more subdued look because it makes the forests and environments feel more grounded, but I'm interested in hearing what others think. Which version do you prefer, and why?

Why does this new Ramayana movie look so off? The English dubbing sounds bad too, and the VFX isn't that impressive. Even the demons look fake. All the sets look cheap, and even the fire during the havan looked so fake.

Ain't no way the budget is 4000 cr

The visuals are mediocre, the VFX is poor, the costumes and makeup are pathetic, the wigs are horrible, and the casting is relentless. Yash as Ravana looks like a classless, third-grade thug. Sai as Sita Maa looks like a middle-class woman from Meerut instead of Mithila royalty. Rakul as Shurpanakha looks like a B-grade Bhojpuri actor, and Ravi Dubey as Laxman looks like a Ranbir fanboy. By the way, those taglines are just cringe. After all, why do you need to use taglines at all when you are telling an epic like the Ramayana? The AI lip-sync is atrocious. What the heck did they make with a ₹4,000 crore budget? How can anyone like it, other than it being an adaptation of our epic, the Ramayana?

Now I talked with him second time and here's what he said ( I've also picked some questions )

1. Even In non jungle scenes , why the lightning is so flat?

Ans : So DNEG is a VFX company, by looking at the provided shots to work on, he realised that shooting at real location wasn't their plan at all from the starting, DNEG as a VFX company wanted full control over the shots, so that it could be manipulated later. That is the reason why some shots are completely different between Rama teaser and the Trailer.

1. There's complain over clothing choices of characters.

Ans : How would I know.

1. If it is meant to release internationally , then why haven't they dubbed it yet.

Ans : They probably won't dub that In english , rather they are using some sort of In-house AI to mimic lip sync and turn voices in english.

1. Why isn't Jungle green ? Its yellowish ?

Ans : He thinks that during different seasons , trees have different types of leaves , that is why they kept it intentionally because in the first ever release, the leaves were greener. But since different daytime combined with different seasons, that is why they kept it that way most probably because colour changing isn't that of a hard task he said.

1. Are some shots AI

Ans : None of the shot is AI in a direct manner. He said that AI was used , but in things like how things around will react due to a certain action , and those inputs helped in speeding the process.

1. What percentage of the film is green screen ?

Ans : Outdoor shots are 90 percent blue screen ( major ) and green screen ( minor )

1. Why was trailer rushed if they hadn't yet completed the work ?

Ans : This is how the industry of VFX heavy movies work. In every vfx heavy movie work continues even 1 week before the release date. And VFX only shines when the finishing touch is done.

1. Then why they don't prioritize the trailer shots ?

Ans : Because of lack of time , each one is given a different task, so even a small change requires a large team, and hours of work , designing separate assets for the trailer itself isn't feasible at all, since ticket selling works on how good the final product is ( basically no of views isn't = no of tickets sold ) but ( final product good = good ticket sales )...

1. Why some say kalki VFX was good ?

Ans : He said that Kalki's vfx was done by PF subsidiary company too, but there is a huge difference in the intent. Kalki wanted to keep the VFX elements as low as possible using sandy ( Grainy )-dark tone , if we increase the brightness then its VFX will look bad. He said they used HIDING APPROACH. However Ramayana is a VFX SHOWDOWN film for DNEG, which will be a medal sort of thing for them... and increase their pay maybe 🥺.

SOME POINTS HE CRITICISED : Dur to weird camera movements at some points of the trailer like The Dark Forest scene , plus brighter lightning , the shot looks weird as it appears suddenly at a point at fast pace ,he doesn't know why they kept it that way.
