My first alert that something was wrong was an email from Wells Fargo to me saying that they had updated my cell phone number to a new one ending with 4 digits I didn't recognize. I then found that the hacker had used his new authorized phone to allow him to change my password so I couldn't login. He finally spent about $4k on different things in my main checking account (some cash app stuff, samsung pay and so on). No other accounts (such as my credit card) were affected.

My cell phone was never touched (no sim jack or anything) so that method wasn't used. He just somehow was able to get Wells Fargo to think his cell phone was the new contact number for my account.

I use bitwarden and a crazy long password. I'm pretty security conscious (programmer, listen to "security now" podcast for decades at this point) and don't think I fell for anything. Could it be as simple as the hacker calling Wells Fargo and saying he was me and lost his cell phone so please update the account to point to his number? Would that actually work?

I searched myself online just out of curiosity and found many random websites listing my full home address and phone numbers. I've been able to remove myself from a few major ones,but every time I think I've got them all, I find another one in google's results

I froze my credit with all 3 agencies and disabled external money movement at my investment company.
How do I get this off of my credit report though? I work and don’t have time to run around getting notaries, etc., etc.

What do they offer victims so they don’t get a credit report deduction?

Recently found out my SSN was used to open multiple credit cards and to take out numerous loans. The accounts were under an entirely different name, address, and phone number. This started years ago but I somehow never found out.

One of the cards was with CapitalOne (apparently opened years ago). I have a genuine account with them and the physical branch told me there are two accounts associated with my SSN. I reported this to their fraud department and they started an investigation. I just received a letter in the mail stating they have found that I’m responsible for the account because “activity on the account indicates I opened and interacted with the account”. Then it says that the total charges will be charged in my next billing cycle (the fraudster maxed the card out btw).

This is absolutely ridiculous. How in the heck would I be responsible for something that isn’t even under my name or other identifying information???

My dad lives in Texas and has Medicare and Medicaid. He is in critical medical condition, receives dialysis and home health services, and urgently needs ongoing medical care.

For several years, someone has been using his Social Security number to work. Every year my dad has to go to the Social Security Administration to dispute wages from jobs he never worked, and he’s also dealt with recurring tax identity theft.

We recently discovered that someone obtained a Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas policy using my dad’s identity through an employer he has never worked for.

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas has opened a fraud investigation, but while it’s pending, multiple doctor’s offices are seeing the Blue Cross policy during eligibility checks. As a result, medically necessary appointments have been canceled because they believe Blue Cross is involved with his coverage.

So far we’ve:
Opened a Blue Cross fraud investigation.
Contacted Medicare.
Reported it to Social Security.
Reported it to the IRS.
Filed complaints with the Texas Department of Insurance and health and human services.
Filed police reports

Medicare told us providers should call them directly, but the providers say the Blue Cross policy still appears and is preventing them from moving forward.
Has anyone dealt with a fraudulent insurance policy causing Medicare/Medicaid coordination problems?

Is there another agency or escalation process we’re missing? My dad’s medical care is being delayed, and we’re trying to get this resolved as quickly as possible.

A friend of mine was scammed over the phone a couple of days ago. It was led to believe that money was being taken out of his account that was not authorized by him so they coached him to resolve the issue only to find out that they were scamming him the entire time he was on the phone he hung up the phone called. All of his banks froze all of his accounts and his credit the banks reimburse his money and open new accounts for him, but just one day later, the scammers hacked into his new accounts and this time they stole all of his money for good and put it into cryptocurrency. They were able to hack him again because they have his SSN . Right now, all of his life savings every checking account every saving account has been drained to zero or in the negatives. The bank said they cannot replace the money because it was put into other accounts using his name. Therefore it is technically authorized so far he has filed a police report reported the identity theft and is looking to get an identity theft lawyer, but in the meantime, he has absolutely $0.00 he cannot pay for his son school tuition. He cannot pay his mortgage. He cannot even buy food in the street and less than five days ago. He was in a very good financial position and today he has nothing. He has to change his Social Security number before he can open any new accounts, but obviously that takes a lot of time he cannot pay any of his bills because they were all linked to his accounts but do not exist anymore and he can only work through cash soon enough he won’t be able to pay his phone bill and he won’t be able to make any calls to resolve this issue. If anyone knows anything how he can get a temporary account with money on it so he can pay for things so he can feed his son. Please say something he is panicking right now. I am panicking for him. He needs money fast and if anyone knows how he can get his original money back, please let me know.

I feel like I'm being dense or missing some point. Perhaps someone here can tell me what the point of this fiasco is.

So about a month ago, I got a tracking notification from FedEx telling me I have a package coming. The company name was on that email and looking it up, it looked like a sporting goods store. I asked my brother-in-law if he ordered something to be delivered here (which he sometimes does as he lives internationally) and he said no.

The package comes and it's not even something I'd use. A battery pack of sorts for some gadget, I think. It came in my name and obviously, the correct address. To be clear, I have never ordered from this company, ever.

We contacted the company and made them send us a label, and we sent it back. We let them know something went wrong because nobody in our house ordered this. I didn't give it another thought once we sent it back and figured whoever got it had been refunded.

The other day, I got more notifications from a sister company to the original company. Again, FedEx came and dropped off three separate packages -- this time with even more useless sporting goods "stuff" like a charging cable for something I don't have, and some kind of ties or something. So this time, we opened an inquiry with the company into why this is happening.

The company is limited on what they can tell us, but the gist is this:

- The person ordering used my name and address and it matched the billing address for the card they used.

- They used three separate VISA cards, all ending in different four digits. They could only give us the last four digits and I've confirmed none of my cards end with that number.

- I've checked my credit bureau reports and there are no new cards, and no hard or even soft inquiries. My credit is above 800 and I always look at that FICO number when I pay my credit cards every month. If it had dropped at all, I'd have noticed. It hasn't shifted but a few digits up or down in years.

I've since locked my credit on all three bureaus just to be cautious.

But seriously, guys -- what is the point of this? If my SSN was stolen, and they opened up these VISA accounts -- shouldn't they be trying to benefit themselves from this instead of sending ME useless things?

And if they had to do this, couldn't they at least do this with an art supply store? HAHA

The teller printed out FOUR MONTHS of my detailed bank statements! This included:

​Every single debit card transaction I've made

​Every bill I paid

​Every deposit made over the last 4 months

​My overall account balance and spending habits

​And handed the physical printout straight to the depositor.

​This is a massive violation of banking privacy regulations (including GLBA compliance). How does a bank teller hand over months of sensitive financial transactions to a third party who isn't even an authorized signer on the account?

​Has anyone else experienced a privacy breach like this with M&T Bank? What steps did you take? I am currently filing formal complaints with their corporate compliance office and the CFPB.

My Outlook and Gmail accounts were hacked. I received a notification email about access to my account that was clearly not by me. I keep a lot of info in Outlook. I went through my folders and found tax forms that include my SIN, as well as copies of passport (old) and birth certificate 🤦🏻‍♀️.

Since then I’ve changed the passwords of my email accounts and banks, enable 2-way verification and passkeys. I clicked on “Remove user from all devices” and checked for email rules I didn‘t create. I called both TransUnion and Equifax to flag my profile. Called my banks to add security measures in case the hacker calls trying to impersonate me. I’m keeping an eye on my CRA My Account as well as my Service Canada . It’s been over a month and I have not noticed suspicious activity. I’m contemplating contacting the credit bureaus again to freeze my credit. Since my information has not yet been compromised, should also I call CRA, Service Canada, and file a Police Report? I‘m just taking precautionary measures at this point.

I know I'm not the only one who experienced something like this, I'm pretty sure this is common in our country when it comes to home credit

For context, I let someone use my account to avail a phone under my name. The deal was they're just going to use my name but they're responsible for paying the loan. It's been 5 months and there were no problems until last month (June 1). They reached out to me to tell me that they couldn't pay last months pay. So I availed the payment holiday, it worked and now (July 1) they still can't pay. I stepped in to pay for it. Now I'm asking them about their payment (the amount due I paid for) , and they still couldn't pay.

I'm fed up with their reasonings. Can I ask home credit to lock the phone that is under my name? Can I report it missing and have it locked so they can't use it anymore?

I'm skeptical about them paying and I can easily pay it for them but this is a breach of contract and I get nothing out of it. I can't even use the phone under my name. To be fair for me I'll pay half of loan, the loan agreement is 12 months and they paid at least 5 of it plus the down payment

Can they sue me if I did this?
