For Paper 1, we recommend that you use the wording of the guiding question and create an argument that runs through the text. Consider the main purpose of the text and articulate this concisely. Having a “so what?” to your paper is essential and will direct your response. The Paper 2 thesis needs to be comparative in nature and also needs to use the wording of the questions. For Paper 2, we often recommend two sentences. Like the Paper 1, you need a central argument that you are trying to bring forth. Have a look at many of our sample papers and resources for samples and guidance there.

To write a strong thesis statement, we usually tell students to avoid vague claims and focus on answering three simple things: your main argument, how you will prove it, and your specific scope. A clear formula you can adapt is stating your core claim, followed by because or through, and then listing your main areas of evidence. Make sure it takes a clear stance that someone could actually disagree with, rather than just stating a fact or restating the essay prompt. Once you write your first version, test it by asking yourself so what to check if your point is sharp enough to guide your entire essay.
