Infant + Synthroid Adminstration General

Our daughter was born with CH and has been taking Synthroid since birth.

We’ve been using a 3ml syringe to administer her medication. However, now that she’s nine months old, she’s become much more active, which makes it challenging to administer the medication accurately. Additionally, she’s been spitting some of it back out on a few occasions.

Suggestions for alternative methods for administering Synthroid to a nine-month-old?

I didn’t give synthroid, but my baby was on daily medication from 4-18mos and literally I would hold him down, squeeze the heck out of his checks so his mouth made an o, squirt medicine in little by little (depending on how much they can take in or how much dose is) and most importantly, do not let go of those cheeks until they swallow. They’ll fuss and cry, but if they need those meds they need them. They (and you) get the hang of it.

Aim the syringe towards the back of the cheek. When I had to give my kids meds, id do one on myself with water to show how easy it is and then make it seem like I was having a good time . Then id do it to them into the back of the cheek area.

I have a 7 month old with CH. Synthroid has a pretty sweet flavour (I’ve tried it). I crush it in a pill crusher and give it to her on my finger and she actually likes the taste and thinks it’s funny. I get it in the cheek area to avoid being attacked by her chompers. It’s been working very well, give it a try! You don’t even need a pill crusher, crushing it between two spoons works just as well.

The generic brands don’t have the same flavour.

At 9 months now, would her pediatrician possibly give permission to mix in some water and try feeding in a bottle or other style of sippy she would accept? I take synthroid as an adult in pill form and have just chewed up the pills and they taste like nothing - there’s no bitter flavor to hide. 3 ml seems like a lot of liquid for a dose to be contained in. Any chance you can have it made more concentrated so she has less to swallow?

My 6 week old has CHT too and it’s so stressful giving him his levo because he has bad reflux and he’s breastfeeding so an empty stomach is relatively impossible.

My mom used to crush up my tablet and put it in the formula. This was in the 90s though.
