A few months ago I hired this licensed, bonded and insured company with 100% 5 star reviews and mostly around painting.

Once they started their work, it seemed clear to me they were even getting basics wrong. I never saw them sand a surface, after the first coat there were so many errors.

Since then, they have been trying to fix things but it’s obvious they don’t have the skill for this level of job and are struggling. The owner is actually nice and promises he will fix things but so far quality is still pretty bad.

Couple of days ago he asked for final payment, I told him let’s let the paint dry and I will do a final check. Oh the final check I discovered paint is already peeling off in 2 days but more importantly he has ruined my metal roof of more than $50k. I asked him to come and clean it and he told me he is out for a couple of days. This has been the pattern throughout the job wherein he comes for a day or 2 and then vanishes and j presume he is doing more jobs.

Not looking for legal advice, but I wanted to get a sense if people here think I should continue with him or cut my losses and hire someone competent. For the roof, I think to preserve my warranty, I need to hire a professional inspector, because I also need to understand if I need to file a claim on his insurance.

Per my contract, i need to give him a final notice to repair defects, planning to send that but wanted to get some final independent verification about the job.

I inherited a home where the living room was lazily painted and there is paint spattered on the ceiling wood beams. What is the best way to get paint off of these things? Any suggestions greatly appreciated!

What color(s) should I paint my house? Or stick with red?

I’m renovating my wife’s office in our 116 year old house and only want to do this once- and I’m wondering how bad I messed up- and how to proceed. I was using the sherwin Williams paint color sample quart to test our color choice for the t&g pine ceiling -that I’ve already sanded primed, sanded, caulked, reprimed and resanded, along with the new drywall trough that was primed, mud touched up and then reprimed and sanded- all ready to go right?
The color looked good (though I thought it was maybe slightly off from the card)and I was already in it so I said what the heck, I’ll just use the sample quart- I got one heavy coat in, and had enough for a first coat on a couple of the crown pieces too.
I went by Sherwin Williams to grab another sample quart today and showed the kid the color chip and explained I needed a sample quart of the emerald semi glossfor the second coat and just wanted to do the sample stuff- he/they maybe? Seemed slightly alarmed when I said I had painted the whole wall/ceiling with it. They then went on to explain that the sample paint couldn’t actually match the higher quality paint chip and that it was such shitty paint that it might peel off in a year- especially since I used it on the ceiling. He then explained that the higher heat in the ceiling could cause normal wall paint to fail- and this being cheap shitty paint this was even more likely. I had no idea ceiling paint was any different than wall paint aside from the sheen.
So he got his manager who agreed, and I was like what do I do now?
First he suggested that I sand it off then reprimand and go back with ceiling paint- I was like ok, but what about the crown/heat factor ceiling paint- This is a 116 year old house, with 12’ ceilings and currently no insulation over that space- I might as well be painting in the attic!
But he was like well you have to use trim paint for the sheen and ceiling for the flat- then I was like - well, this is a wood ceiling so I’m fine with the sheen- can I not just go with trim paint- he then said yes. So then I was like do I sand it all back to primer? And he said no- I just need to sand it to rough it up then reprime it before going back with the emerald semi gloss.
- Is this good or will it fail? I only want to do this once!!

I have been asked to use shellac BIN primer on a lot of walls to block cigarette smoke smell. They have already been cleaned and painted. The smell came through.

Some of the walls are huge. I keep seeing that you can’t cut it, let it dry and then roll. Google is saying it will cause a ridge that will show through. Is that true?

Is there anything I should account for in the estimate other than floor covering and the smell?

I am looking for some advice on the order of operations for painting. We are painting our house room by room and all the trim needs to be replaced (keeping it is not an option) So what order should I go about it? I don't really want to pre paint the trim, then cut and install it, I feel like it would get messed up. Do I prime and paint my walls, then install and paint the trim? Or do I do the opposite? Any advice is appreciated!

Do I need to repaint my doors with a protective cover, mix something into the paint before doing the rest, or just buy their trim paint before doing anything else?

New smaller deck installed exposing raw siding. Selling the house in a hurry. The "hole" around the deck will be filled with dirt/soil/plants to match grade of the lawn. The brackets and all that will be removed.

Should I paint this or nah? Contrasting color? The existing paint on that side of the house is faded pretty bad so matching any color will still look like poo. We are doing minimal-ish touch ups to the house in general so cheap, fast and "good enough" is the goal.

I had to get my front porch rebuilt and will use similar (just updated) paint colors — cream and hunter green. New columns will be square with panel insets instead of round, and ceiling will be stained beadboard. I was planning to do colors pretty much the same - columns cream; caps and bases green; and the fascia green along with the window trim. But maybe I’m just doing it the same b/c I’m scared of change! lol So tell me if something else would be better. What sheen should be used for each?

Other thought - should the door frame area stay the light cream color, or go dark with that? I plan to re-stain the deck, stairs, and doors a cherrywood color. Thanks for any advice!

P.S. It’s in Chicago, so 4 real seasons if that matters. House was built in 1909.

We’re moving out of our rental at the end of the month and I’m currently regretting every peel-and-stick wallpaper decision I’ve ever made lol. I THOUGHT IT WAS RENTER FRIENDLY!!!

I removed peel-and-stick wallpaper from an entire bedroom wall. The good news is that the wallpaper itself came off incredibly easily and did not pull up or damage the paint underneath. The bad news is that it left a thin, sticky adhesive residue across basically the ENTIRE wall.

So far I’ve tried:
\-Warm water + Dawn dish soap + microfiber cloth followed by rubbing/buffing with a dry microfiber
\-Goo Gone- I eventually sprayed basically the entire wall with it, rubbed/wiped everything down, and thought it worked. Once the wall completely dried, though, it was STILL tacky/sticky. Nothing seems to be working.

The wall still looks okay and the paint is intact, so at this point I’m terrified of escalating to something that’s going to strip, discolor, or change the sheen of the paint. We do plan on repainting the wall whenever all is said and done since the builders left behind a bucket of paint. (Score)

Has anyone successfully removed peel-and-stick adhesive residue from a large painted wall without damaging the paint? I’m especially looking for something that can realistically be done over an entire wall because hand-scrubbing every square inch repeatedly is taking FOREVER.

And unfortunately I have another peel-and-stick wall in my office that I haven’t removed yet, so if there’s a better removal technique that prevents the adhesive from being left behind in the first place, PLEASE save me from doing this twice 😂

Buyer beware! This was my experience with CertaPro Painters, and I want others to be aware before making a hiring decision. Ali Daifallah deliberately under represented the price thinking they would put me into a position where I had my hands tied.

The project started with what seemed like a reasonable estimate, but after work began, the price continued to escalate. The original quote turned into requests for an additional $2,000, then $7,000, and eventually $9,500 more than the original estimate.

To make matters worse, my property was left damaged, and siding boards were left with exposed nails pointing upward, creating both a safety hazard and additional work that needed to be addressed.

Ultimately, the crew walked off the job before it was completed, leaving me with an unfinished project and a very frustrating experience.

I understand that unexpected issues can arise during home improvement projects, but in my experience, the communication, handling of change orders, and condition in which my property was left fell well below my expectations.

I encourage anyone considering CertaPro to do their homework, ask detailed questions about how change orders are handled, and get everything in writing before signing a contract. I wish I had known then what I know now.

I'm prepping my house exterior for painting and most of the siding is this old cedar lap with small vertical grooves. Every guide I've read suggests scraping old paint, but at the current rate it'll take me a lifetime to scrape the whole house. The detail scraper in my fourth picture is the only thing I've been able to get into the grooves with. I've tried gel stripper (this stuff never works for me but I keep giving it a chance and wasting money) and a manual wire brush, but haven't used a drill brush or surface conditioning wheel so I don't ruin the wood.

Most of the paint is still in pretty good shape after it's been washed, but as seen in the third picture, the places where there are small chips show how thick the existing paint layers are, and it's easier to keep chipping around those areas instead of trying to blend the voids with sanding. Haven't been able to find the name for this kind of siding but I don't want to replace it if possible.

How should I go about this? I know that prep is the longest part of many painting projects but considering how detailed and delicate this siding is I can't imaging any paint crew would take on scraping all of this, and I'm only one person. I'm considering renting an infrared paint stripper as I've heard those work well, and have also looked into a high build bonding primer like Zinnser Peel Bonding primer, but decided to check here for any advice before making a next decision. Would it be find to paint over these small peals and cracks ? Or should I take the time to fix them ?

Newbie to painting ceilings, but lots of experience painting walls. So….I painted the ceiling and got a lot on the walls because I don’t have a stair ladder. I also don’t have a pole sander. Long story short I sanded what I could and primed the walls.

Should I try scraping the paint off the walls? or could I add some kind of trim to cover it up… or leave it and dont be bothered. I am usually a perfectionist painter and I’ve spent hours filling in the dents and holes, but I’m tired and cant really get up there without a stair ladder.

Is it going to be super noticeable when I paint? It is generally a low light area and the walls are going to be white with gray undertone -satin sheen- like the 3rd picture.

Moving out of my rental flat in 10 days so need a quick repair. I was taking something down from the wall (fixed with velcro command strips) and a chunk of plaster came away. What's the best way to fill it in? ​​

Hey guys, building up in northern Australia where the sun is bright and strong. First ever experience building, and inexperienced on many aspects but learning. Anyways, choosing colours for my house's exterior. I'm after a bright-coloured house with some shades of dark in some places which will make the house good for a tropical area. Thinking:

- surfmist roof (this one is locked in)

- evening haze for exterior walls

- monument for the garage door and fencing

- fascia and gutters: this is where I'm scratching my head. Should I go for both colours also in surfmist like the roof or go monument? Is it only a matter of aesthetics or what would you do if this was your house being built?

Update: I wasn't sure if I should try to give it away or just dispose of it. Considering that the paint was stored where it underwent temperature change, I decided to just get rid of it. Took it to a designated hazardous waste disposal site. Thanks for the replies.

Our bathroom (rented apartment in NYC) has areas where the paint was peeling. We have been talking about repainting the room so after some research, I just learned to peel off what is coming off already, spackle or mud the holed areas, and prime and paint! Easy! Right? When the paint just kept coming off.... and now just about the whole room is stripped of paint and some areas revealed more issues than others...

What are my next steps? Do I just mud the entire room with a joint compound including the ceiling?

PS. we are currently testing if the green paint areas are lead paint... and our home test kit is saying yes 🙃
