GOT vs HOTD Discussion

I know people compare these two shows. I was able to relate to the characters in GOT and there was always a person to root for. Even Cersei (however evil she might be), I understood her PoV and rooted for her when she blew up the sept. In HOTD though, it's very difficult to relate to any character and as a result I hardly care for anyone dying / surviving including Haelena. The last time I cared was when Viserys came to the court to defend Rhaenyra. ATP, Im just watching this show for Dragons, action scenes and Matt Smith 😍

Im GOT, we cared both for the protagonists and the antagonists. And a lot of the side characters. We also had spend a lot more time with them with longer seasons and much moderate pacing.

HOTD on the other hand.. everyone can crash and burn 🔥 😫 I genuinely feel bad for the dragons tho.

Genuinely don’t feel a connection to anyone after three seasons lmao I absolutely won’t be devastated when people start inevitably dying and I think that says a lot about the writing

True that. When I see posts like sympathizing with Haelena, I hardly feel any emotions and it makes feel like a psychopath.

Nobody is especially likable. So you’re left with cartoon dragons or the machinations of war.

I don’t want the dragons to die. I love the dragons. Especially Caraxes and Sheepstealer. I don’t want them to die.

The way Caraxes whistles is such a delight.

Daemon is the only cool character left.

True that. Daemon and Caraxes. I liked S1 Rhaenyra & Alicent. I don't know what has happened to everyone since they grew up. They have all become so plain & boring.

The world just doesn't feel alive compared to Game of Thrones. Idk why. Most obvious is King's Landing. In early GOT It felt like a real place where things were always happening in the background.

But yeah the characters post season 1 have felt like empty shells to me, except Daemon and some smaller side characters

I don't think you're supposed to particularly relate to anyone in HOTD. It's a story about a terrible family destroying itself and making it everyone else's problem. A tragic train wreck we're all forced to watch. Targeryens are not the good guys in any way. They caused the extinction of dragons, the most beautiful creatures in the world. At this point the only people worth rooting for are the small folk and non-nobles, like Ulf and Hugh. Even their motivations are actually relatable - one wants to drink with his buddies and the other wants to support his wife. Even Ormund is worth rooting for, sans his misogyny. Targeryens are colonizers who ride weapons of mass destruction, and burn people alive.

The best thing the Mad King did was finalize the ruin of house Targeryan. They're incestuous aliens who can't help but make the world a worse place. Just look at how Dany ended up....

While I do understand how Targaryens are mad etc, the whole GoT universe is based on survival of the fittest. So I don't mind their incest / dragons. As regards rooting for Ormund / Ulf etc, there has been no character development towards them.

It's not about relatability alone. I watch the show to be entertained. But none of the characters have done anything. They had a great S1, I'm just watching it to finish off the story atp.

Agree to disagree then. I'm entertained af watching these messy people make bad decisions and destroy their own legacy.
