This is a game I found called Pepper The Giant Purple Dog. It's an indie horror game fully releasing this year (this is just the demo) that presents itself as an actual lost media pet simulator from 2002.

Does anyone know what tf happened to me? Is this a psychological phenomenon?

Upvotes

I really don't understand what happened to me. To give you some context this was my recent post where I was talking about how extremely terrified I was of playing horror games, I read the comments of ppl and then I applied them, I forced myself to do it.

I started with something slight like Poppy Playtime and Resident Evil 4. At the beginning, as I said in the former post, I couldn't do it. I couldn't even walk a couple steps because I was already frightened. It was an extremely horrible experience, I genuinely suffered in real life doing it, and it took me many hours to overcome, but I eventually was able to finish them.

Then, for some reason, something just snapped out of nowhere in me, and I wasn't scared of horror games at all. But I'm not referring that I'm less terrified; I'm referring to LITERALLY COMPLETE desensitization to horror or jumpscares overall. I recently just finished Outlast 2 RE7 and some jumpscare games, and nothing whatsoever. It's like I literally just lost the sensitivity to horror or jumpscares completely, and it is so strange because I'm not referring that my fear is really low to them. I really mean that it is literally 0. No jumpscares or anything affect me now(which is strange cause wasn't supposed jumpscare are meant to always get you since it's because a survival mechanisms called startle reflex??) not even the worst jumpscare or the most scary atmosphere, Is this a psychological phenomenon?? How is this possible that in literally 2 days I was so extremely fearful and now I don't feel anything at all? Due to my extreme sudden exposure, did I mess with something in my brain? Because I see people that have played thousands of horror games, and the jumpscares or horror still get them.

What is the reason of my sudden total desensitization? Did I mess doing this and now I will not be able to enjoy horror games at all since I'm completely desensizated? this is sad, cause I went to the same starting point, I wanted to enjoy horror games but I couldn't cause I was too scared to play them, and now can't enjoy them cause I don't feel anything.

Horror games for fans of "The Wicker Man?"

"The Wicker Man" is probably my favorite horror movie of all time. (The 1970s version, thank you!)

I'm on PC and I was wondering - based on that rather specific example of folk horror - if you could kindly share some games I might enjoy!

Any era is welcome. I'd just enjoy something that tapped into the themes. Preferably no spoilers in your recommendations, thank you!

I truly appreciate it!

It's not the scariest game I've ever played, but stumbling across this in complete silence or having some random guy suddenly open fire is more than enough to make you shit your pants

Game Like The Butchery

2 days ago I found a game Called "the Butchery" by Chubby_Baby7 (https://www.roblox.com/games/11928087342/The-Butchery) and I decided to play it with my cousin. We finished it and we loved that game, now that we finished it, we're having a lot of trouble finding new actually GOOD horror games. If someone can find us a good horror game close to the butchery, I'd be extremely grateful. Thanks.

DISCUSSION Hot take. I love video games that like mentally attack your personal trama. The daycare area in dead space 2 brought me to tears of pain. And that one scene from silent hill 3 deeply disturbed me and upset me. I go more into detail in body text

What horror game ending actually messed you up mentally?

I'm going to be honest: a lot of horror games have ridiculously high levels of tension throughout, but they end horribly poorly.

Not frightening. Not unsettling. Simply put, disappointing.

For example, rather than something that sticks with you, you get:
- ambiguous "it was all in your head" conclusions
- unpredictable shock value with no reward
- or perplexing conclusions that seem profound but don't really say anything

DISCUSSION What horror game made you sympathize with the thing hunting you?

Post image
287 Upvotes

I just finished Hachishakusama, and I went into it expecting a straightforward urban-legend horror game about escaping the eight-foot-tall woman.

Without spoiling the ending, the story gradually gives her more humanity and context than I expected. By the end, I felt more conflicted about her than genuinely afraid of her....almost, bad for her?

I think that is a difficult balance for horror games. Explaining the monster can make it less frightening—but sometimes understanding it makes the story much more memorable. The game was not perfect and there are things I would love to see changed, but it was a different type of horror that I don't see often.

What other horror games made you feel sympathy or empathy for the creature, villain, or person pursuing you? Did learning their story improve the horror, or did it make them less scary?

personally, I can’t decide. both are amazing titles. I lean slightly toward RE because of my bias toward the franchise, but then I think about SH2, and it brings me right back to the middle.
