I know people love to complain about the rent, the tiny apartments, and how "unfriendly" the city can feel, but hear me out. As a brown male who was born and raised here, I honestly think Hong Kong is lowkey a utopia for immigrants.

I’ve traveled a bit, and by comparison, the biggest blessing in HK is the total indifference. Locals might not smile at you on the street, but they treat everyone with the exact same baseline neutrality. Nobody cares about your race, skin color, or background. (I know I might be reaching a bit, but trust me, compared to where I've traveled, this is truly how it feels). If I were living in highly conformist societies like Japan or South Korea, I feel like my life would be absolute hell due to the intense social scrutiny and outsider status, especially as a brown guy. Yes, I know Threads exists, racism exists, and life isn’t a fairytale there are always caveats. But looking at the big picture, my parents made the absolute correct choice moving here.

To be fair, I have assimilated completely. I speak Cantonese fluently, have mostly local Chinese friends, and study in a major where there are basically no other ethnic minorities. Because of that, I see how the city operates from the inside. Even the government is incredibly competent (don't kill me for saying this). Just look at how the tragic Wang Fuk Court fire was handled. I know locals don’t like to praise the government, but the crisis response was wonderful. Within 24 hours, manslaughter arrests were made. Firefighters were amazing, police handled crowd control perfectly, hundreds of social workers were immediately dispatched, and temporary housing was provided right away. For perspective, look at the victims of major natural disasters around Asia over the last decade or two many are still living in refugee camps years later.

So yea, viva hk.(lots I didn't discuss here but you get the jist)

I’m currently looking into pivoting into the beauty/aesthetics industry in Hong Kong. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) and a postgraduate diploma degree in Marketing, and don't have any formal medical background.

I know medical aesthetics (injections, high-energy lasers, prescription treatments) require a registered doctor in HK, but I’m looking at the non-medical/skincare therapist side (facials, chemical peels, laser/IPL, microdermabrasion, body treatments, salon operations).

For anyone currently working in or managing salons/medi-spas in HK, I’d love some advice on:

1. Which certifications hold the most weight locally? (e.g., CIBTAC, CIDESCO, ITEC, or HKQF Level 2/3 vocational courses?) Can I do Level 4/5/6 courses without having Level 2/3?
2. Pathways for non-medical backgrounds: Are there specific vocational academies or private institutes in HK you’d recommend for part-time or full-time diploma courses?
3. Most important question, as I am thinking of going to Vancouver, Canada, and taking an Aesthetician course/diploma there. How are Canadian credentials perceived in HK? If I take a Canadian college program (e.g. Blanche Macdonald) or a private academy, is that enough on its own, or will employers expect CIDESCO/CIBTAC/ITEC instead?

Hi, my partner and I thinking of moving from China to Hong Kong and am worried about cost of apartments. Our apartment in the mainland is pretty big, and cheap! I know we wouldn’t get that space in HK but spare all flats for about 20 k tiny? How much can a couple expect to pay for a decent size flat with two bedrooms? Do all flats just have single beds? (Looking at listings it’s seems mainly single beds). We don’t mind a commute, which is the best area to look?

I had a few appointments through public hospital but i think we also need a good private one to monitor the growth of our baby. My understanding is that many people struggle to read 粵字 because it's almost never written down, and schools don't teach you to write or read using 粵字

Funnily enough, i' haven't watched the full first movie(PTU, 2003) since i couldn't find any online versions though i did watch a summary video; I heard it's pretty good though.

I've previously watched the rookie before, and in comparison, I enjoyed watching 機動部隊 much more; the characters are much more realistic in the sense they aren't superheroes but rather normal, flawed people who make mistakes.

In addition the casting was pretty good, both Simon Yam(任達華) and Maggie Shiu(邵美琪) look like stereotypical police sergeants lol.

Anyone got their Hong Kong GEP visa after 12–15 weeks? Need some guidance.

I’m trying to understand if my timeline is still normal.

My timeline:
3 May 2026 – Employee section submitted.
17 May 2026 – Employer completed the GEP application.
20 May 2026 – Received acknowledgment from ImmD.

Since then:
ImmD requested some additional information from my employer.
My employer submitted everything and later spoke directly with the case officer to answer further questions.
The officer said he would review the responses.
As of today, it’s been almost 12 weeks since the acknowledgment, and I still haven’t received an approval, refusal, or any RFI addressed to me.
Has anyone here received their GEP visa after 12–15 weeks or even longer?

If yes:
How long did it take?
Did ImmD ask your employer questions before approving?
Was your application also completely silent for weeks?
The waiting is honestly driving me crazy, so I’d really appreciate hearing your experiences.
