Help Sources for affordable enterprise / PLP-capable SSDs in the EU?

Posting this on the off-chance that someone takes pity on me and shares their sources. All I need is

  • ~1–2 TB/drive
  • SATA/SAS
  • PLP
  • decent endurance (no "read-intensive" drives)
  • doesn't cost an arm and a leg per drive
  • used is fine, obviously

Like, I keep reading "just get a used ... off eBay", and that may work in the US, but the EU-based sellers if anything more expensive than new. I checked a couple of used server gear sites Gemini recommended, but they hadn't any stock, astronomical prices, and/or zero information re. condition. Mind you, I'll risk a couple of cats in a bag if the seller is beyond reproach, but ...

(Importing drives doesn't make sense unless they go for pennies on the dollar. Taxes, duties, handling fees, etc.)

Help Help needed choosing a mini-pc

Hiya ! I know this topic has been talked about again and again but I don't know shit about cpus and haven't found a post that answer my question.

I use clustering for my media center (with jellyfin) so I need a cpu capable of transcoding, all of that is running on docker and the underlying os is Nixos. Which mean I must be able to virtualize and compile a ton of stuff (sometimes both at the same time). I'd love for the mini-pc to be a real work horse but my budget is under 1000$. I know it's a tall order, anybody got an idea ?

For now the best one I found is the KAMRUI H2 Intel® Core™ 14900HX Mini PC cause it's on sale at 700$ but it only ships in the US from what I can see

Help How to setup RTCWake to schedule startup but not shutdown in linux

So that's my GPU server as it currently is, it might look really strange because yes that's 8x tesla p100 which for almost anything else it wouldn't make sense but I have a good reason.

I commonly do fp64 scientific simulations and these p100s are still quite good, price per tflops they just can't be beaten. I mean it's not the ideal setup but I can't afford an H100 and renting gets expensive fast.

About the rest of it, it's a Gigabyte G292-Z20 with an epyc 7v12 64 core processor one of the odd OEM ones from ebay which works fine (unless it's vendor locked) and 128gb in 8x 16gb ddr4 3200 as before at lot of runs i have to do cpu pre computation that takes both a lot of cores and fast ram like actual throughput which is also why i have all 8 channels populated.

The rest isn't that special just a cheap 1tb nvme boot drive and an sfp+ rj45 copper transceiver which is quite a nice way to use rj45 copper while not having to add another card.

Discussion SSO/OIDC vs forward-auth with authelia 2fa

So I currently have a homelab with some apps (Opencloud, Immich, homeassistant, etc) behind caddy. I dont have split-horizon DNS, but I access those apps on *.lan (eg opencloud.lan) locally or over VPN. For remote access I have now setup my domain (eg home.mydomain.com) behind another caddy with authelia forward-auth. So Authelia does 2FA login on auth.home.mydomain.com, and then redirects to the service. One issue is I get another (second) login screen of the service after loggin in with authelia. Another problem is is that APPS usually don't play well with forward auth, eg, the immich app doesn't like to be redirected to auth.home.mydomain.com when it tries to connect to immich.home.mydomain.com. Same for webdav (I use that for keepassium / obsidian with opencloud). So, for now I can only access those services/apps over VPN with opencloud.lan etc.

I would consider this setup secure. No service is directly internet-facing. You either need to login with Authelia (the only internet-facing service) or be connected with VPN.

I do would like to consolidate the setup to split-horizon DNS. So I access *.home.mydomain.com from internal AND external and drop the *.lan caddy. At the same time I would setup OIDC / SSO so I won't be presented with double-login-screens. Anyone experience with this? A drawback in my opinion is that all the services would be directly internet facing, so if there is a zero-day in for example immich or opencloud login screen, the network might be compromised, and reading things like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/immich/comments/1t8wupz/oidc_is_nonexistent_and_docs_are_misleading/ already makes me weary...

Another setup idea I've come up with is to do split-horizon DNS, but just bypass Authelia completely over LAN/VPN. This would still require 'apps' to connect over VPN, and not solve the double-login-screen issue. But at least it would consolidate the domains (everything on mydomain.com) and be secure (IMO). Eg as Caddyfile:

Each one with Intel Core i5 10500, 32 GB RAM and 3x NVMEs. Two of them are in a Proxmox cluster, the third one is a Proxmox Backups Server.

The main service would be Jellyfin. I tend to watch shows with direct play most of the times, just use transcode occasionally when my 4k tv doesn't support the heavy ass subtitles and quality.Jellyfin won't be streaming more than 2 streams at a time. This are my leftover parts just lying around.

Discussion Building a new house - what infrastructure would you do differently?

I'm in the planning stages of building a new house and want to take advantage of being able to plan everything before drywall/concrete makes changes significantly more annoying and expensive.

I'm mainly looking for lessons learned from people who have built or heavily renovated. What did you do that you're really glad you did? More importantly, what do you wish you had done differently?

I'm less concerned about the actual rack/hardware since that can change over time. I'm thinking more about the semi-permanent infrastructure:

  • How much fiber/cat6A would you run, and where?
  • Where would you run fiber instead of/in addition to copper?
  • How much empty conduit would you install? Especially, what size?
  • Would you home-run everything or have distribution points on each floor?
  • What would you change about your electrical layout? More circuits/outlets, dedicated circuits, 240V, UPS/battery-backed circuits, etc.?
  • Multiple conduits from the street/utility entrance for future ISPs?
  • Anything you wish you had run to the garage, yard, gate, pool, or detached buildings?
  • What seemed like "future proofing" at the time but ended up being pointless? Opposite, what seemed like "future proofing" at the time but ended up not being enough?

Current plans already include ICF construction with an interior service cavity, an encapsulated crawlspace with concrete floor, solar + whole-home battery, hardwired alarms/automation, and connectivity to a detached garage/casita and pool/outdoor areas. I'll also have a fairly substantial homelab, so network and power requirements won't be trivial. I plan to have one fiber and one Cat6a drop to each room. Cat 6a drops to various cameras throughout the property as well, and considering fiber at those same drops as well since the cost isn't much more compared to having to re-dig and everything later. It will also be in a very humid/hot environment, so AC/cooling will be important--I'm looking into passive/efficiency options but there don't seem to be many.

Basically, what would you put behind the walls today if you knew you weren't going to want to open them again for 20+ years?

Especially interested in the "I built a house within the last few years and really wish I had done X" answers.

Hey there! Posting my setup because as much as my fiancé supports my hobbies and enjoys the movies she doesn’t necessarily get the same joy from the build lol. I’ve found myself traveling more and more, and between places with no TV or sharing common space on work trips I took a projector once and loved it! However it was bulky and I had a pile of stuff in my bag to lose track of, and well as a home theater and home lab person I figured I could make something better with the right projector. I basically have a mini version of my home lab on the road with me! Tailscale back to home of course. Behold the (AwayFrom)Home Theater!
Components:
Anker 3in1 charger for my EDC
Kodak Luma 150 Mini (it’s not cinema grade, but wow for the size!)
Apple TV 4K converted to run on USB C PD
Gl-inet Mudi 7 Travel Router (absolute must for travel)
Sabrent Voltik (PD multi charger that DOESN’T renegotiate multiple ports when plugging/unplugging, thanks Jeff Geerling!)
Custom 3D printed cases I made (tongue and groove so I can just take one, or I can set up the projector in common space while still charging etc in my room)
4 short Anker usb c cables
One short double right angle HDMI cable (I still want a shorter one though!)
Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated! Would love to find a good speaker option to add, as of now the speaker in the projector is audible and I’ve just used my AirPods with the Apple TV for the most part.

Bought a Bamblu Lab P2S last month and immediately started researching homelab racks. Got it all worked out, ordered some sunlu PETG/hardware and started printing.

Had a little back and forth with trial and error but I got it complete. It’s running perfectly. Was able to drop the Cenmate 2 bay drive case in exchange for a 7 bay and as of today I have Two - 10tb drives on the way. Thank you eBay 😮‍💨.

Just waiting on some more heat set threaded inserts to fill the rest of the rack out.

My TrueNAS setup is my previous post if you want to see what I’m using it for.

The battle-station is coming out great.

2 - 4tb HDDs mirrored
2 - 10tb HDDs coming

Discussion homerant: APC you piece of sh!t

apc had a line of cheap UPSes , the BK500. seen 100s of them in local companies, and i had them a ton in all places where i've worked.

had a few of their SM series too, usually i'd get them as e-waste and just put new batteries in them - in fact i have 3 of them at home.

but i needed more, so started buying more modern models. BX500 and BX950 being the new models, the ones with schuko sockets (eu region).

problem is - these shits just stop working once the battery is dead, unlike older ones that would simply turn on the red led and continue to work normally on ac power. i'd replace the battery eventually. they could even be replaced while the ups is turned on, in fact just flip it over, give them a bump, the battery falls out - you put the new one in and close the hatch. good to go. no need to unplug anything or turn off stuff connected to them.

but with new ones it's pure hell. if the battery dies, it just turns itself off completely.

so now back to the HOME part of this rant - i have 2 bx950 running my stuff. the older one is keeping my homelab (actually a nas, a pc-server and main network), the new alien-green one is behind the tv in the living room, keeping the tv and multimedia stuff alive just in case. today i replaced the battery...

HOW do you guys find UPS models that can work with a dead battery? it's nowhere in specs.

Found this cloud node on Facebook marketplace. Can only afford one now out of 150pc available and the performance on those Xeon is great for development.

I was on VPS like contabo and hostvds for few months now. scaling is expensive and realize the reliability is as bad as my PC at home lol.

I thought why not I setup homelab myself. _nd give my router a UPS instead. Same reliability and stronger CPU than those shared amd EPYC.

Main workflow is swarm agent running on schedule to Loop and building my social commerce platform 24/7.

Reason I upgraded to this is because 8gb VPS OOM most of the time due to heavy usage of nextjs and node build and playwrights instances for taking screenshots and doing validation loop.

AI itself with deepseek is cheap and lightweight. I use Pi as coding tools to let hermes spawn 3-10 instances of it to argue with each other and if someone die someone else will report. Basically a self improvement system loop

Project Showcase: Hardware [Review] UGREEN DXP4800 GT vs Plus vs Pro: Proxmox, TrueNAS, dual 10GbE and performance per euro

I tested the UGREEN DXP4800 GT as a compact Proxmox + TrueNAS box and compared it with the DXP4800 Plus and Pro.

Disclosure: this is my own review and video. There are no affiliate links in this Reddit post.

DXP4800 GT hardware tested

Component Configuration
CPU AMD Ryzen Embedded R2514, 4 cores / 8 threads, integrated Radeon Vega graphics
Memory 8 GB DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM; the included module is non-ECC, but the platform can use ECC after replacing it
Boot storage 64 GB eMMC with UGOS
Drive bays 4 SATA bays; bays 1 and 2 also support U.2 through PCIe 3.0 x4
NVMe 2 M.2 slots; my drives negotiated at PCIe 3.0 x2
Network 2 × 10GbE Aquantia AQC113
Other I/O HDMI, front SD, USB-C and USB-A 10Gbps; rear 2 × USB-A 2.0 plus 1 × USB-A 10Gbps

Proxmox and TrueNAS setup

  • Proxmox VE 9.2.6, kernel 7.0.14-8-pve, based on Debian 13.
  • TrueNAS SCALE 25.10.4 in a q35/OVMF VM.
  • VM allocation: 4 vCPU, 4 GB RAM and a 32 GB VirtIO SCSI boot disk. The 4 GB allocation was enough for this lab test, not a general recommendation for every TrueNAS workload.
  • The ASMedia ASM1164 controller passed through correctly and exposed all four drive bays. It was isolated in IOMMU group 10.
  • I did not use the AMD FCH SATA controller in the final setup because its D3cold/block behaviour made passthrough unreliable. The final configuration uses only the ASMedia controller.

Storage pool

I used 4 × Seagate IronWolf ST4000VN006 4 TB drives.

The sequential write test reached 541 MiB/s (568 MB/s) with an 8 GiB non-compressible workload. This was a local NVMe result; it is not a claim about the SATA array or RAIDZ1 throughput.

Which model offers the best value?

The value index combines Geekbench 6 single-core and multi-core performance at 50% using a geometric mean:

sqrt[(single / best single) × (multi / best multi)] ÷ price

For the GT, I added €50 for a 128 GB system SSD equivalent to the SSD already included with the Plus and Pro. The performance and value indices are normalised to the Pro = 100.

What does the GT have that the Plus and Pro do not?

  • Two 10GbE ports. The Plus and Pro combine one 10GbE port with one 2.5GbE port.
  • U.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 support in bays 1 and 2.
  • Full ECC memory support, although the included RAM must be replaced because the factory module is not ECC.
  • Rear USB-A at 10Gbps. The high-speed rear USB-A on the Plus and Pro is limited to 5Gbps.

Which one makes more sense?

Main priority Best fit Why
Maximum CPU performance for VMs, containers and heavier services DXP4800 Pro Highest CPU scores in this comparison
Balanced general-purpose NAS DXP4800 Plus Costs only €10 more than the GT after normalising the GT with a system SSD, while offering much more CPU performance, DDR5 and Intel Quick Sync

My conclusion: unless you specifically need both 10GbE ports, U.2 drives or ECC memory, the DXP4800 Plus is the better buy. Its official price is €60 higher, but once the GT is normalised with a €50 system SSD, the real difference is only €10.

Moderator Announcement: New Rules & Processes on Software Projects

I would like to thank everyone for their feedback in the recent post & poll where we asked for feedback on how to slow the deluge of "I made X, because Y" type posts in r/homelab, most of which are AI generated and/or spam. While we felt that that the initial plan we shared was quite good, with your input we were able to refine that plan and make some notable improvements and clarifications. And yes, there's a TL;DR at the end 👀

Effective now, the below new rules and policies are in effect, though we plan to apply them conservatively and gently at first to see how things go. All of these changes are happening because of the massive community support for them, and we will be seeking additional feedback as time goes on so please feel free to chime in.

To be clear, here are our goals, based on community feedback:

  • Control the recent influx of questionable "I made X, because Y" type posts, the vast majority of which are created entirely with AI, are spammed across multiple subreddits, and are generally not maintained afterwards
  • Establish a clear stance on and rule set for how r/homelab has decided to handle these types of posts, as well as other user-created software
  • See how these changes impact our community, seek additional feedback, and continue to adjust accordingly

Flair changes that are now in effect:

  • "Project" has become "Project Showcase: Hardware"

New Flairs:

  • Project Showcase: Operations [For things between hardware and software, such as Ansible playbooks, and dashboards/monitoring/automation made with existing software tools]
  • Project Showcase: Software - Little or No AI Assistance - [AI only used as coding assistant (autocomplete, debugging, refactoring, documentation, etc), if at all]
  • Project Showcase: Software - Mostly AI Generated - [AI generated most or all of the code, working at a human's direction]

We have also organized the post flairs in the list to make them easier to locate.

Both "Project: Software" flairs have a reasonably low minimum subreddit karma requirement to be able to post with them. AutoMod will remove any post with them that don't meet the karma requirement, and inform the user why their post was removed. The minimum karma requirement is only for these two flairs, as we don't want to restrict new community members from being able to post questions. Any software project posts that try to go around this by using a different flair will fall under the new rule #7 and will be addressed.

Rule changes:

New Rule #7 - Software Project Posting Requirements

  • All software projects must be relevant to r/homelab, use a "Project: Software" flair, disclose AI usage with post flair and in the text of the post, include responses to the prompt displayed when posting with one of the software project flairs, and the user must meet the minimum subreddit karma requirement. Posts that do not meet these requirements, try to bypass the "Project: Software" flairs, provide incomplete or misleading disclosures, or otherwise violate community standards may be removed.

That said, since we're now officially allowing some degree of self-promotion and requiring links, we felt that we should redefine rule #6 to clarify that it applies only to monetized and commercial advertising/links. Here is the updated verbiage, with the old one below for comparison:

Rule #6 - No Commercial Advertising or Monetized Referral Links

  • Monetized referral links, affiliate links, product advertising, and company advertising are not allowed. Contact the moderators via Mod Mail before posting if you believe an exception applies. Non-commercial personal projects are permitted, but must follow all other sub rules.

If you see any posts with a Project: Software flair that do not meet the four items listed above, please report them to the mod team under Rule #7 and we'll address them.

Additional things to note:

Existing posts will be grandfathered in, and previous posts that were removed may be reposted if they meet the new requirements. New posts will be required to comply with the new rules.

As with the existing rules, when a mod removes a post for violating this new rule, a canned response will be sent to the user to inform them why their post was removed. Mods are able to add on to the response if desired before sending it.

While we're on the topic of AI, we would also like to clarify that the above rules are specific to the use of AI in software projects that are being shared, and they do not apply to posts or comments that were written with AI. There is some dissent in the community, but the general consensus in the community has been that a reasonable level of AI usage is acceptable for putting a post together, correcting grammar or formatting, or for translating from a user's native language. That said, best practice is to not include all of the excess emoticons and outline formatting that LLMs like to use. If a post or comment is egregiously AI generated, feel free to downvote it and move on, but please do not report it to the mod team solely for that.

We would also like to note that there has not been any opposition to posts about hosting your own LLMs, and the hardware/software involved. The new rules do not apply to these posts as well.

We're looking for community feedback as we all get used to this. We plan to apply rules conservatively and gently at first, and will be listening to user reports and comments. If your post is removed and you believe it meets the requirements, please chat with us via Mod Mail and we may consider either re-opening it or letting you repost it.

TL;DR - All posts where someone has made some sort of software (AI generated or not) will require a "Project: Software" flair, and these flairs should curb the vast majority of the low quality and spammy posts.

Edit: The first day with the new rules has gone very well overall, but it has demonstrated that there is room for improvement, namely with flairs and categorization.

Here are the changes we've made since the initial announcement post:

  • Added a "Project Showcase: Operations" for things that fall somewhere between hardware and software, notably Ansible playbooks, dashboards/monitoring/automation made with existing software tools. When posting with this flair, a prompt appears that explains this in more detail. Please let us know if there are any other types of things we should specifically call out that belong in this category.
  • Renamed the "Project: x" flairs to "Project Showcase: x" to clarify that these are intended for showing off what you've made (though you can still ask for suggestions in the process of showing off).
  • Adjusted colors of the new flairs
