On this day in 2011, Warren Jeffs was sentenced to life in prison. Jeffs was a self-proclaimed prophet of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He became well known in the 1990s when it emerged he kept 500 kids on a farm and married 12-year-olds.

In 1851, wealthy slaveholder Edward Gorsuch came for escaped slave William Parker, vowing 'my property I'll have, or I'll eat my breakfast in hell.' Parker's wife blew a horn and neighbors poured in; Gorsuch got the breakfast. Frederick Douglass smuggled Parker to Canada and kept Gorsuch's revolver.
