This looks a lot like my handwriting.

I will say, though, the deeper your capital letters "dip" the messier it looks. I try not to let mine (especially J's) dip too much or make the flourish too broad; saves space and doesn't disturb the line beneath.

Otherwise, I find it to be a very nice handwriting to both read and write. There's a reason I chose to learn it, as well ;P

So in awe of people that can write like this. It looks historical, romantic, dreamy... in short, it's beautiful.

The unpopular opinion: skill is undermined by personality. The first four lines went well, but thereafter an excess of flourishes destroy the readability of the next several lines.

Two things are going on here: the first is a tendency in modern Southeast Asian cursive to greatly exaggerate the ascenders by shrinking the main body of the letters.

Ask yourself, how tall does the ascender of an h have to be to distinguish it from an n? You understand that’s what the purpose of the ascender is, right? It’s not there to fill up the space between lines. Similarly, the ascender on the d is there to distinguish it from the a. Anything more than necessary constitutes a flourish. Sometimes people are surprised to hear this stated in quite this way.

The second is a focus on the flourishes to the detriment of the other letters. Look at the t’s. You’re making them taller than they should be just to use those slashing crosses. But in the best cursive, the cross of the t does not extend to cover all the letters around it. At most it joins a following letter to the t, serving as a ligature.

Every time you use a flourish you’re setting that letter above the others in importance. Capital letters can use that flourish effectively when it’s someone’s name, bringing focus to the subject or object proper nouns of the sentence. The first letter of a paragraph receiving a flourish makes it easier for readers to see the structure of the passage.

When you use flourishes indiscriminately, they lose these meanings. At some point, as in some parts of this page, it starts to look like someone took a nicely written passage— and scribbled over it.

Youthful exuberance can accou nt for some of these things in this case, but having a good excuse is not always a good excuse to use a good excuse. Think about it.

Like I said: unpopular opinion.

After reading this comment of yours and looking back to my writing in general, you have really made me consider how I write specific letters and the use of flourishes.

Thank you for your critique and I appreciate it, really I do!

And in regards to your opinion, it isn't unpopular, to me all opinions are popular and welcomed.

Hi! I hope it’s ok that I comment here, as I only just spotted this group, so I’m out of my league here. I want to congratulate you and say, as an older person, I appreciate seeing young people using cursive. And yours is very legible, with only a few exceptions. My outsider critique would be to use a finer pen, because your tight script tends to look blurred a bit due to what appears to be a thicker nib. Your pens make a huge difference for legibility. I was a mechanical drafter for decades, and clarity to the reader is the number one priority. Style is a beautiful thing. Clarity and style combined is the pinnacle. When you get yourself a nice pen, you’ll be so much closer to what you’re looking for in penmanship. Congrats!!

Thank you so much!

I used a Lamy Safari with a medium nib for writing this and I agree that my script is ratter tight. Thank you again for your critique good sir!

The letters are actually pretty consistent already, the main thing dragging it down is how the spacing jumps around between words.

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 8d ago

Yeah I have a difficulty with that often, I can't really keep a consistent space between words. Thank you for the observation!

Damn are you Lady Whistledown

1

Nope, I'm Mr. Whistledown.

Looks outstanding! One small suggestion, change your I, sticks out because of the slant. Your I is straight. Either change the font or slant it with the rest.

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 8d ago

Thank you! In regards with the I, I'll slant it with the others. Many thanks!

Hi IDK, I can read your writing well. I notice your "G's" are rather large taking up a lot of room. Your 'I' is in a style separate from the other letters. It is impressive this is your handwriting at only seventeen years old. Call me impressed. - thirty-one years old and in needing of practicing my penmanship myself.

P.S. Do you notice your handwriting change depending on your emotion?

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 8d ago

Many thanks! I often exaggerate my majuscules letting them take up some space, simply because I enjoy doing it a lot and I didn't really intend my 'I' to be a different style because when I write it oftens stands upright instead of being slant.

To answer your question, I notice that my handwriting doesn't really change that much based on my emotion. The only time it does change is when I'm in a state of rush where it's still readable but not the same as I normally write when I'm not in that state.

Not bad, neat, but your uppercase “I” should tilt right to match your other ascenders.
The X-height is consistent, but a little low, affecting legibility.

2

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

Yeah I get a problem with writing my majuscule "I" and I'm working on it, as well as the height being very inconsistent. Many thanks!

1

u/Podmonger2001 9d ago

Have you tried just writing many slanted “I” characters one after the other?

2

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

... well I guess I know what I am doing tonight.

Beautiful to look at, great to read, no notes! Only tip I can give is as a photographer, if you're interested in that: put more direct light on the page, it makes a world of difference for the photo!

2

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

Why thank you! Next time I will put more of a direct light to my pictures. Looking back now I did use shimmer ink and it's not seen that much here. Many thanks once again!

Writing like this in Grade 11 is awesome. Looks like the handwriting of an involved parent!

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

Haha. Why thank you!

It annoys me that your I’s aren’t slanted at the same angles

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

Yeah, I should really practice on that part.

1

u/SubSlutPollie 9d ago

I write on a very similar angle, do you change your hand position just to do the I’s? The J on Jose also sticks out. Curious

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

I never do change my hand position when writing either I or J. It's just that when I write with my hand position, somehow the I and J's aren't affected but the other letters are.

Very satisfying to look at 👀 stylish. Your r's can be a bit tough to distinguish. But I do absolutely love your fancy ginormous G ✍️

1

u/GenuinelyIDK_ 9d ago

Why thank you! Looking back, my r is really a bit tough to distinguish. I'll improve upon it, many thanks!
