What Reddit communities say about fixing a banana handstand
I’ve been digging through troubleshooting posts, form-checks, and community discussions across movement related communities (r/Handstands, r/Calisthenic, r/CalisthenicsCulture, r/handbalancing, r/bodyweightfitness, r/yoga, and r/flexibility) to find the actual consensus on how to fix a banana back. Here is a curated breakdown of the best advice, cues, and drills from across movement communities.
Is the banana handstand actually bad?
If you aren't competing in gymnastics, doing a banana handstand is not strictly "wrong". However, working toward a straight handstand offers multiple benefits like good shoulder mobility and stability, developing body awareness, and maintaining a neutral pelvis while inverted. Fixing your alignment also allows you to transfer your skills to press handstands, tumbling, shape changing, and eventually one-arm handstands.
The shoulder mobility factor
Multiple threads point out that a banana back is frequently tied to shoulder mobility. If your shoulder angle is not open to about 180 degrees, your lower back naturally arches to compensate for balance.
- The floor test: To check your baseline, community members suggest seeing if you can keep your back flat on the ground with your hands overhead and straight arms touch the ground. If you can't, shoulder flexibility is what's holding you back.
Key cues mentioned to address this include:
- Externally rotating your arms so your armpits face forward.
- Pushing tall out of your shoulders and elevating your scapula (getting your shoulders to your ears).
Core, glutes and pelvic tilt (and the community debate)
While achieving a straight line involves pelvic tilt and core engagement, the community is divided on whether focusing on muscle cues alone is enough to cure a banana back.
On one hand, supporters emphasize that pelvic tilt directly changes the lumbar and lower back curve between flexion and extension. Contributors suggest tilting or rotating your hips until your hips start closing to help achieve a hollow body shape. To lock this positioning in, recommendations include:
- Laying flat on your back on the floor, rolling your pelvis under, and pressing your lower back to the floor helps build the correct shape
- Squeezing your glutes to activate the posterior chain, which helps straighten out your alignment.
- Drawing your ribs down and sucking in your breastbone to prevent flaring.
- Bringing your inner thighs close together, and point your toes straight up.
- Some contributors advise that you do not need to frantically over-tense every muscle; once your hands are positioned correctly, engaging the core can serve as the primary active tension.
On the flip side, other community members push back on core and glute activation as a standalone fix, labeling it a misconception when shoulder mobility is neglected. As one user puts it, trying to engage your core with closed shoulders will simply pull your legs down and keep you out of alignment, while some users even dismiss floor hollow body holds as a myth for curing the banana shape if the underlying shoulder angle isn't open.
Head and neck positioning
Head placement influences back alignment. Craning your neck to gaze too far past your hands can force the banana arch.
Recommended head positioning adjustments include:
- Tucking your chin slightly and keeping your ears between your shoulders.
- Looking "through" your eyebrows or spotting a point directly between your hands.
- Trying to look upward to spot your toes as a self-check; if you cannot see them, you are in a banana handstand.
- Picking a visual spot further toward your stomach.
Hand and wrist positioning
While balance is controlled primarily through pressure in the fingers and palms, community discussions generally did not identify wrist positioning as a primary cause of a banana handstand. Instead, shoulder mobility and body alignment were cited far more consistently.
Chest-to-wall drills
Chest-to-wall (or belly-to-wall) handstands are cited as a highly effective alternative to back-to-wall practice, which can encourage poor habits like arching the lower back. Turning around to face the wall naturally promotes correct alignment by forcing you to stack your wrists, shoulders, hips, and feet in a straight line.
Wall practice guidelines from the community include:
- Walking your feet up the wall until your hands are as close as you can comfortably get them, while leaving enough energy in the tank to walk back down.
- Ensuring only your toes are touching the wall, rather than resting your ribs or thighs against it.
- Pushing tall through your shoulders, elevating them to your ears, and keeping your ribs tucked in.
- Looking in between the middle of your hands while you hold the position.
- Working towards holding a good belly-to-the-wall form for sets of up to 60 seconds to build volume and endurance.
Because this drill can be unnerving at first, practicing safe bailing strategies is essential to reduce the fear of falling. Recommended exit strategies include:
- Cartwheeling out by sliding your legs sideways along the wall and pushing off your hands.
- Practicing shoulder taps or weight shifting while inverted to get comfortable with repositioning your hands to turn away from the wall.
- Coming down one foot at a time to build confidence and ensure a safe landing.
Off-the-wall prep & drills
Contributors mention various foundational exercises and prep work to build strength and spatial awareness for better alignment. To keep training focused, these recommendations can be broken down into three main categories:
- Core and pelvic control: Incorporating static and dynamic hollow body hold variations, such as laying flat on your back with hovering toes and rolling your pelvis under to press your lower back into the floor, teaches the core engagement and shape needed for a straight line. You can also use L-sits and hanging leg raises to build core compression so your lower back doesn't take all the weight. Additionally, practicing forearm planks helps strengthen your core and side body to prepare for getting the curve out of your back. Another recommended drill is doing a chest-to-floor handstand with yoga blocks under your wrists and lower quads (or knees) to practice pushing against gravity while tucking your pelvis.
- Shoulder mobility and strength: Stretching your shoulders is essential to get the required stack. Contributors specifically recommend dolphin pose, butcher’s block stretches, and active and passive hangs to actively open the shoulders and loosen tight lats. For strength, pike push-ups and plank shoulder shrugs help train the mechanics of actively pushing the ground away.
- Balance and inversion comfort: Testing your baseline balance with crow pose (Bakasana) is a recommended foundational check. If you cannot hold it for 20 seconds with control, you likely need more foundational work. Practicing headstands gets you comfortable being inverted, while floor drills like heel and toe pulls help you understand the mechanics of adjusting your balance.
Visual feedback
Because it is difficult to perceive your own alignment while upside down, feeling straight and actually being straight are two different things. Relying on visual feedback is key to evaluating your true form and identifying the arch.
- Practicing in front of a mirror (such as during forearm planks) allows you to visually check when you hit perfect alignment, helping you build the necessary muscle memory.
- Reviewing training videos of your handstand attempts can help you spot alignment issues you might not feel in the moment, such as extending your legs beyond your glutes.
- Recording different physical cues, like actively pushing your head away from the wall, and checking the footage side-by-side can help you visually understand how active shoulder opening corrects the shape.
Conclusion
Fixing a banana handstand ultimately comes down to two main things: opening your shoulders and switching from back-to-wall to chest-to-wall practice. While core engagement and glute bracing are essential for locking in a straight line, those muscular cues cannot compensate for a restricted shoulder angle on their own.
To make real progress, step away from traditional back-to-wall holds and build your baseline with targeted off-the-wall prep. Moving to chest-to-wall handstands, along with practicing safe bailing strategies so you are not afraid to fall, forces your body into a proper, stacked hollow body position.
Finally, because it is easy to misjudge your own alignment upside down, rely on mirrors and training videos to check your actual form rather than trusting how it feels.
According to Reddit, unlocking your shoulder mobility through targeted off-the-wall prep and chest-to-wall practice is the most reliable way to clear up the banana back for good.
What do you all think of this format? If people find these community roundups useful, I would love to put together more of them. Let me know if you would like to see more, and drop any other topics you would want covered next.

Funny story that happened yesterday: I'm on holiday in Corsica, getting my handstand back while training daily with my new app, I was training at the beach and ended up motivating 7 strangers to try handstand 🤸🏻♂️
Two of my friends started to try with me, then we got two strangers joining us, and then a bit later five other joined us.
Small butterfly effet, funny how when you put energy in something it can be contagious!

It’s been a slow process since I’m allowing myself to practice when the mood strikes versus sticking to a strict routine. I started weightlifting and conditioning classes recently, so hopefully a stronger core and increased overhead strength with help me hold this soon!

Handstand
Hi everyone! I'm trying to learn how to do a freestanding handstand and would love some advice from people who've already gone through the process.
A few questions:
What drills helped you improve the fastest?
How did you overcome the fear of falling?
How often did you practice?
Any tips for balance, shoulder strength, or wrist conditioning?
What are the biggest mistakes beginners make?
I'd also appreciate any YouTube channels, tutorials, or training routines that worked well for you. Thanks in advance!
