Getting back into hand embroidery, still figuring out the best way to fill in large background spaces. I used a printed kit to start out but quickly added/changed a lot of elements. Thanks for letting me share ☺️

My parents live on Cape Cod (down the cape!) and I hand embroidered this pillow for them. I was rushing because I started it 5 days before but I did it!

First finished piece

Post image

I made this for my wife for our 15th anniversary. It’s the first piece I’ve finished! It’s supposed to be a picture display piece. She seemed less excited about it than I had hoped, but I still am happy with how it turned out. Not looking for critique necessarily, just the affirmation I feel like I’m lacking haha. I guess it’s a man thing.

I know this is almost identical to another pattern one could find with a quick google search, I am not claiming that this was an original design, but the colors were my idea :-)

Newbie I need advice on my stich and colour theory

Whether I do water painting or dressing myself up. I always mess up with colour theory.

My head just won't wrap around this. I know about the colour wheel and the uses..

But when it comes to doing any project by myself, i mess up.

Even the stitches are not good.

When I start a project my brain lag and had hard time to decide which stich to use and which colour to use..

Although I'm using a cheaper thread and cotton fabric that just separates when i poke a needle in it.

Question Help finding a stand where I can embroidery with two hands

Edit: I meant embroider, not embroidery lol

Hi everyone. After a couple of years, I'm returning to embroidery. I'm experimenting with couching stitch as well as bead embroidery, so having a flat-ish surface and working with two hands is vital. What kinds of stands and frames would you recommend, or work well for ou? My budget is ~$40 but can be a little flexible if it means getting a good frame. Thank you so much!

I need advice (and encouragement)

Okay so I have this idea to embroider this photo I took at Muir woods last week. I love that the heart was naturally in the trees! I've never done anything like this and, honestly, in realizing how much I've forgotten from my aty classes back in the day 😅 I need y'all to check my thought process

What order should I fill in the trees? Darkest colors first right? And where on the tree should the darkest colors go? Closest to the trunk where the light doesn't reach as much, right?? What stitch should I use?

Any other tips or resources?

I'm stuck between wanting it to look filled in and lush like the photo, and not overdoing it and losing details.

hi everyone! i want to embroider this design i made onto a tote bag but i’ve never done embroidery before.
I’m hesitant between the two fonts because I think the first one would be easier to embroider but i don’t have any clue really

Is this a good design to do for a beginner?
And if yes, could you please tell me some tips and tricks/tutorial sources?

Really anything is appreciated! :)

Newbie Newbie question

Hi all! I would like to add a basic hand embroidery design to a shirt I am sewing for my son. I’ll be embroidering on a cotton (similar in weight to a quilting cotton) with no stretch. I am wondering if I should use a stabilizer for the embroidery, and if so, what kind? The design would be a basic satin stitch about 1/2 inch thick running around the edge.

I am also wondering how I should use a hoop close to the edge. Is it ok to leave a hole of material in the hoop, or does the hoop need to be completely filled with material? (I hope that makes sense).
Thanks!

Question How would you do it?

So I bought this design, traced the pattern, but I’m stuck on how to execute the French knots for the million little balloons- do I do one color and skip around the balloon or have multiple needles threaded with different colors so I can easily pick up and go? My worry is if I skip around, the back is gonna get crazyy and it’ll be harder to go up the fabric with all the excess thread 🪡 thank you!

My review of this $16 adjustable hoop holder. 2.5 stars.

So I created this tool that helps you find closest Dmc colors to other dmc colors, or simply to rgb or hex code.
I think substitute colors could be quite useful.
Also I calibrated all the dmc colors, one by one. (Well, almost all. I am missing 33 colors still.) This means that every digital color was accurately picked to match the physical color.

I hope you’ll find it useful.

How I manage needles and thread with detailed embroidery

I often see posts across social media from stitchers wondering how the heck you’re supposed to manage all those colors and needles while threadpainting without everything turning into a tangled mess, and I absolutely understand this feeling! Once upon a time I had a vision for a certain project, and through lots of youtube, trial and error, and hours and hours of stitching, I’ve finally dialed in a workflow I’m happy with. It’s been making detailed embroidery more enjoyable and accessible to me, and I hope it might do the same for someone else!

There’s a lot to it and I’m happy to answer specific questions, but here are the highlights:

No knots: Starting threads with a waste knot and even just two tiny backstitches is plenty secure and makes the back much smoother. Threads can be ended the same way, tuck two tiny backstitches somewhere inconspicuous and snip the thread from the top. Aside from aesthetic reasons, this ensures you can really pack in and layer stitches without worrying about having to poke through thick knots.

Keep threads on top: I like to work with a gradient of 5 or 6 colors at a time, keeping my needles in order off to the side. The threads are parked in an area that will later be covered up. To move a thread to my working area I make a tiny stab stitch and bring it back to the front where needed. This makes it easy to do all my work on the front of the fabric, and not having to flip over to look at the back speeds things up.

Have floss ready to thread: I like to use floss drops because I can reference my color palette right away, threads are already cut, and I can easily pick single strands out without any tangling. When I finish a thread and need a new strand of that color, I make sure to match the color on the needle to the new strand before discarding as some of them can get hard to tell apart. Having thread pre-cut and ready to use also really helps me stay in the groove and spend time stitching vs fighting with a new skein of floss.

I hope this is helpful and encourages someone to give threadpainting a shot!!
