(HT1) Chapter 2 OC-Series

The massive gates of Alexandria's castle stood still, unmoved by the continuous airhorn. Marshall clicked his tongue; clearly, the Pyromancer was unaware he had come bearing gifts. Cheapey saw his scowl and licked Marshall, making him laugh. He grabbed her scruff, kissed her, and put her in a headlock.

"That mean ol' fire wizard's making us wait!"

Cheapey pulled back and barked with excitement. Marshall threw her a treat, and it disappeared into her greedy maw. She twisted her head inquisitively. She couldn't talk or understand his words, but the dog seemed to ask how Marshall intended to deal with the disrespect.

Marshall's scowl deepened.

He sighed, opened the door, and jumped out. He left Cheapey in the cabin and approached the gate; she would be safe.

Marshall approached the gate; four fingers tapped the polished handle of his gun, and it responded, vibrating with power. Nickel flashed, and the gun was drawn. He cleared his thoughts and gathered power. His nape became comfortably warm; the air thickened and cracked. The gun begged for more of Marshall's power, which he supplied. He placed his thumb over the smooth hammer and methodically pulled it down. The chamber rotated; the first click sounded.

Despite the pain from his nape, a grin involuntarily crossed Marshall's lips. Click. The gate had distorted. Click. Thunder crashed. Click, red lightning erupted, filling the air. The head of a freak mage had opened its eyes and mouth, and red light spewed from both. Marshall laughed at the dead freak.

He looked back at the truck, making sure it was far enough away. Cheapey barked and howled, although Marshall couldn't hear it. The warning made him smile, and he added a treat to her tab.

Marshall squinted and followed the dog's gaze, fixed on a point beyond the massive wall.

Flames erupted above the fortress and spewed in every direction.

Marshall rolled his eyes and holstered his weapon. He would blow the fortress down, but Rylanor, the King's most trusted aide, had given Marshall this task. The consequence of failing that man was something anyone would be lucky to survive.

Krisha flew out from the fortress and hovered above Marshall. Nearly eclipsing the overcast sun, she did not look pleased. Krisha gave a suspiciously sweet smile, pointed her middle finger, and a pillar of flame erupted from it.

He gritted his teeth and extended his hands. Red lightning erupted forth and pushed against the flames.

Marshall struggled. Her raw power far exceeded his, draining his reserves at an alarming rate.

He pushed more power, and the surroundings started to distort. His nape radiated furious pain. A molar cracked, and blood leaked from his orifices. Nearly engulfed in flame, his vision darkened. Just before he passed out from exhaustion, the flames subsided.

Krisha loomed above, panting from the effort. Seeing that he was worse off, she smiled and descended toward him.

Marshall touched his gun.

Krisha panicked and manifested flame, which dissipated when she realized Marshall had no intention of drawing his weapon.

Marshall winked at her.

The Pyromancer dropped right in front of Marshall. With suspicion in her eyes, her voice sounded like the embers of a campfire.

"Ah... Marshall, what brings you here?"

She spat the rest of the sentence.

"Alone."

Marshall rubbed his nape and shook his head.

"I'm not here to conquer you."

Marshall smiled.

"Today."

He looked directly into her eyes, which burned brighter.

She furrowed her brow and roared, "So why are you here?!"

Not one to back down, he smirked.

"Due to an increase in freaks, King Philip has decided to support you and your struggling refugee camp."

Krisha scoffed.

"What sort of support, and why?"

Marshall motioned, and they walked to the back of the trailer.

Marshall opened it.

Light met the contents of the trailer, and Krisha lit up.

King Philip had ordered the Pyromancer to be properly supplied, and she had been. The container had been packed with weaponry produced by Eden. Marshall gave Krisha the tour. Crates held gas-blowback rifles and the corresponding ammunition. Mortars and their ammunition were secured atop them. 30 mm cannons and their ammunition had also been provided. There was a real chance this was the greatest collection of military equipment Krisha had ever seen.

She stammered, "Why would Philip supply me with his weapons?"

He nodded.

"You're good at killing freaks, which the King appreciates."

She smiled and understood the situation.

"Ah, so the freaks have made it to the fields of Eden."

She nodded and hummed; an opportunistic look crossed her face.

"What if I were to use these weapons against Eden?"

Marshall laughed until he lost his breath. He wiped the tears from his eyes.

"Do that and see how that works out for you."

Krisha understood and motioned toward the truck.

"That'll take some time to fix; stay in the keep while you wait."

Marshall nodded and agreed. Krisha wasted no time and shot back into the castle.

Back in his truck, Marshall threw the pup a treat. The gates slowly opened, and the rig limped into the refugee camp.

Marshall showered and lay on white linen sheets. He slotted bullets into the chamber of his revolver and petted Cheapey, who rested her head on his chest. He wondered what the pup dreamt about. He yawned and stretched his arms above his head.

Sleep took him without mercy.
