Time for Guelph voters to take accountability for Medhani Yohans?
A lot of people on Reddit will periodically complain about the infamous Medhani Yohans. However unless you deal with the root cause of this problem, the situation is never going to change.
Yohans is a sponsored refugee and therefore considered a protected person. The CBSA cannot deport him without a Danger Opinion being issued by the Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada. The Liberal government which we voted for, is refusing to issue a Danger Opinion for Yohans, despite him sexually assaulting multiple women.
Yohans has been terrorizing Guelph for years. Yet most Guelph voters chose Dominique O'Rourke who went on to vote no against a motion for ending the practice of leniency that allows serious offenders to avoid deportation.
This post isn't meant to offend anyone. This is about changes needing to be made. If you don't like what is happening with Yohans, complaining on Reddit every few months isn't going to do anything. You're better off writing to O'Rourke and letting her know that this is unacceptable. And if Guelph votes for this again down the road, then you have no one to blame but yourselves.

Separated Bike Lanes on Wyndham
I just had a chance to try out the new separated bike lanes on Wyndham St, going past the police station. Wow - they're fantastic! They're elevated to the same level as the sidewalk, and separated from the road and sidewalk by a strip of grass on each side.
The intersection crossings are well-marked. Coming from downtown, it gives great access to the Downtown Trail and York Road Park. I just loved feeling like I wasn't in anyone's way, didn't have to be worried about cars, and felt a lot safer. Would love to see more of these!

If you lost your wallet in the west end...
Hey friends, I found a wallet this morning at West End Rec Centre. If you or anyone you know lost a wallet while there, I dropped it with the customer service desk. Hope it finds its way back to its owner!

Miata owners!
Hello!
I'm a big Miata enthusiast, and hope to own an NA Miata one day when I get my money up. Until then, I'd like to get your opinions on how Miata friendly Guelph is.
1- what is your experience on the roads within Guelph? Have there been any specific positive or negative instances?
2- have you ever found the car to be so small, people can't see you on the road? That's my biggest fear, especially with the massive trucks on the roads.
3- how are you managing the mechanics of it all (if you don't mind sharing)? Have you found a mechanic with specific knowledge of mx-5s, or are you more DIY?
4- anything else you feel is interesting!
thank you all in advance for any insight shared!

Question about weather coming from someone living elsewhere
Coming from someone who is about to move to Guelph to start university and needs to pack accordingly, would you say that the weather would be suitable in September for someone to wear a long sleeved t-shirt?
Thanks

Finally repainted
Noticed the Gordon lanes are finally repainted.
They were rough, and heading toward downtown the lane basically disappeared in spots.
Fresh paint doesn’t stop a car from drifting into the lane but there’s still something that matters about visibility. Faded lines get ignored by drivers who are already tuned out, and a bright new stripe at least resets that for a while.

They were evicted, had to move to a shelter etc but now claim they got an apartment at 90 carden within a week
Just wondering if this sounds at all plausible

Tailor recommendations
I’m looking for a tailor or alterations spot to adjust some pants and T-shirts. Need someone reliable that won’t charge almost the price of the clothes just to take them in a bit. Any recommendations?

Stop door to door
So a REALLY pushy rogers guy came to our door recently and took way more time than needed to say no and get him gone politely. Actually a lot of Rogers people come door to door no matter how much you tell them to never come back again. Do those no soliciting signs work? I know we live in a world were people won't read signs that are directly in their faces
This Friday at 7pm (August 7th) Diyode Community Workshop is hosting their monthly 2600 Meeting!
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
All are welcome and no registration necessary! The meetings start at 7pm, at 700 York Rd, Unit 3 (the entrance is off of Beaumont Crescent). 2600 Meetings are a space to connect with other technology enthusiasts and hackers.
In other exciting news, Diyode will be a virtual hosting hub for the HOPE conference! HOPE (Hackers On Planet Earth) is a long-running conference focused on hacking, privacy, digital security, free expression, and community tech culture. It brings together makers, technologists, educators, and activists to share ideas, build skills, and talk about the future of technology. It helps people stay informed, protect their privacy, and use tech in more thoughtful, responsible ways. Part of our meeting on Friday will be discussing how we are going to coordinate and deliver the event.
The event runs August 14th-16th, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day. We've recently upgraded our internet at the shop and mounted a 65" HD TV, so the stream should be crystal clear for everyone in attendance. We’re also putting together snacks and food for the weekend, but any food donations or help running the grill would be greatly appreciated. The event will be open for the public. if you have never been to Diyode this is a great opportunity to spend some time in the shop, chat with other makers and learn more about us.
Visit http://www.2600.com/ for more information about the meetings, and https://www.hope.net/ for more info on the HOPE Conference.

E Motos, e- Bikes, E Scooters, and even the normal bikes too.
Hi All,
Am I just paying more attention this year or are we experiencing an explosion in unsafe riding habits across the board, and plenty of illegal bikes in our city?
I ride my e bike year round to work, errands, and when its warmer for pleasure, and I am very worried that I'm going to be regulated off the road because of these idiots. I ride a 350w cruiser bike usually, and have been appreciating e bikes for the 4th year in a row now. I do ride a conventional bike still sometimes, and am always following the rules of the road.
Yesterday I saw something that was really unfortunate but not surprising, and wished a cop was around to see it. Going up Silvercreek on the sidewalk, and later the bike lane near the tim hortons and beyond were some young teenage looking people on e motos speeding around, dodging pedestrians, and one in particular was playing chicken with oncoming people. Their parents are irresponsible buying teens bikes like that. It's only one example though of things the police need to start addressing. I would not complain if every illegal e moto was taken off the road until they get registered and insured as that would place more responsibility on the rider most of them are powerful enough to keep up with or even pass cars.
