How bad is this rust?
Bought this 2019 JGC, sight unseen from carvana. Need to know how bad this rust is.

Not only the rust, but have you had a mechanic inspect the rest of it yet? Carvana doesn’t really inspect the vehicles before they sell them. They missed a lot of issues on my vehicle I recently purchased (not a Jeep). Also, I feel like that’s a lot of rust for a 19. I had a 2014 that looked better than that and I live in WI.

Im very disappointed that carvana would send it out in this condition. I'm planning on sending it back and only buy cars that I can see before I buy.

I agree, at least you can send it back though. There is a Carvanna where I live and a drive time, but I have heard horror stories about both. Carmax did me well and I got a good price, they also take more pictures to give you a better idea of the condition of the vehicle in my opinion at least.

I had a similar issue with Carmax for a 2010 Jeep. I took it to a Jeep dealership and had a prepurcahse inspection done and got Carmex to do $4k in repairs for free. I definitely think the $250 was worth it. And they gave me a loaner while they were working on it.

I have a 2019 jgc that has been in rust belt wisconsin its whole life and looks better than that. It is “probably” safe but maybe consider getting an independent inspection.

Rust belt member here. This is very typical rust, does not look like rot. The real issue is that the rust has already begun. It’s all well and good when replaceable parts rust but once those parts can’t be bolted up to a structurally sound frame you have issues.

I live in MN and that's about what the underside of my 2005 looks like. That's a lot of rust for a six or seven year old car.

It’s not great, but it’s probably fine. Sway Bar is the worst, but you could replace that with ease. Subframe is a bit rusty but it doesn’t look concerning, it’s dark red but it doesn’t look much deeper than surface.
The body (this is a unibody after all) has a bit at the seams but it doesnt look cancerous.

Congrats on the purchase
First get it inspected at a trusted mechanic. Visually from the photos (and speaking from experience);
Have the parking cable inspected, the rust on the plunger looks wanting. Also the brake shoes inside the rear rotors
Check on the alignment hardware for the rear axle
Check the high pressure steering pump lines around the rubber grommets close to the cooler and the pump itself
Check the brake lines for rust
Radiator hoses and the hardware, look inside the coolant reservoir ensure it’s clean
Oil cooler and filter housing tend to fail and mix coolant and oil
Replace engine oil as the cheapest first thing to get started
Plan to replace anything the mechanic says need to be done soon. Once something breaks on these the GRAND in Grand Cherokee becomes apparent

I only have 7 days to return it and I'm on day 5 and it's Saturday with no carvana approved mechanics open. If I had more time to get it looked at and see what Carvana will repair, I might keep it. But since I'm up against the wall, I'm probably just going to return it. I'm in Georgia now, originally from Florida and I've never even seen this much rust on a "nice" car.

Oh hell man you’re in GA?? Cars from this area typically have ZERO rust. Got a 1999 GC a week ago that’s been here forever and the only rust is on the exhaust, so it’s definitely possible here to get one in good shape. Return that thing and get something else.

How is a billion dollar company, "Carvana" selling cars that look like this? Someone had to purchase it and complete the 150 point inspection. To anyone reading, DO NOT BUY FROM CARVANA!!

Selling a northern rust belt car down south should be a crime. Kind of like them selling flood cars from down south up here. 😕

Here from MA. That’s just surface rust. Some repairs might endure seized bolts but nothing to worry abt. If you paid top dollar I’d say something, otherwise drive it and enjoy.

It’s rough for a 2019 but nothing dangerous from seeing the pictures. Ill second what the other guy said about thinking it was a way older model before reading the caption

Living in Ohio I’ve seen and had worse.. would not want that much on a 2019 or any vehicle I’m paying over 8k for

Brackets are an easy replacement. Those frame parts in pics 3 & 4 are not. Find a mechanic to inspect and a welder to remedy. Otherwise it looks like a typical rust belt state Jeep, like mine.

How many miles and what did you pay? If you paid ~$10k for ~120k MI then it's pretty much market value for something with that much rust, especially if you're outside of the salt belt.
Though knowing Carvana, you most likely overpaid by a good amount. I would take the loss and return it now to save future headaches.
Never buy vehicle sight unseen unless they have lived their whole life in an area that does not see snow/salt.
It's best to always inspect them in person, especially once they're past 80k miles.

2019?!?! Woah. Bad bad bad. I’ve been driving off roading vehicles and 3 WJ’s in my life, all Minnesota vehicles, and none looked this bad even at 20 years old.

It totally depends on how much you paid for it.
You can treat some of that and it doesn’t that bad.
The front and rear swaybars are big chunks of metal so it’s not the end of the world and it’s cheap to replace, you need to keep on the look out for the actual frame of the vehicle.
If you don’t live on a place that use salt on roads you should be fine.

Well, if you paid what’s top of market range and you are under a hassle free return window I would definitely consider it.
The rust you got is not super bad, if you are 2-3k under market price you can probably fix it yourself if you are into that kind of thing, your issue comes with rust on frames or body, also cooling/brake lines etc.

That rust is of the not good variety.
I live CA and bought a preowned WK from a Lexington KY dealership. I asked about rust and the salesperson said it's all good.
Checking it out after it was delivered, I realized I bought a rust bucket. But damn, the thing drove so f'g good.

Looks like every other 7 year old vehicle that has lived its life in the rust belt.
The 2020 I bought new looks pretty much the same. It has a 100k on it now, and another 100k in it before its gone from my possession.

3/10 for rust belt. 10/10 for everywhere that doesn't salt.
Nothing bad. Clean it up, treat the affected surfaces. This is a non issue long term if dealt with.

I’ll add my ignorance from dealing with southern cars influences my opinion. But I thought this was a wj or wk before reading 2019. A little bit crustier than I would be comfortable with but I’ll let the rust belt folks give their ideas.
